Hi,
I know the head of this department, Dr. Lorie Hofmann, very well from when she was at University of Central Florida and I was there at the time before she left.
Someone has to be studying actuarial science in the math department. Don't be shy!! Please post!!

I attend AASU and am studying Math and Physics. Going to start studying for Exam 1/P In May.

I went to AASU, graduated with applied math in actuarial science and operations research in '06. Lorrie is great, she was always pushing the math dean to open new interesting classes and trying to make the programs more competitive. I passed 1/P in March and am planning to sit for FM/2 in August.

Have they always offered the actuarial science program?
I took a lot of math classes at AASU back in 1999-2000 when I was in high school and never heard about it. The math department head was Dr. Ed Wheeler back then.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think the program started a while ago and no one ever tried to meet the criteria. Then when Dr. Hoffman took over the head position she started pushing for a resurrection.

How many actuarial science students are there at AASU?
As I remember, mathematically-inclined students would usually go do computer science instead of math at AASU.

There aren't really any actuarial students here. I looked at the courses they recommended for the Act/Sci concentration and felt I'd be better prepared by getting a minor in Financial Economics instead. Upper division math courses aren't offered enough. I'm signed up for a course in the Spring which is basically an FM study course, hopefully enough people sign up for it.

When I was there we had 3 definite Act Sci students, and a few others who were leaning that way but never actually committed... and the CS department had become sort of a joke IMO

Small university in Savannah GA
The ActSci program is part of the Applied Mathematics BS they offer, but when I graduated the department head was pushing for more field intensive courses
Not a top 100 actsci program by any means, but several of the profs there have sat for exams at some point in the past, and being a small program, they really get involved with helping you find a career that suits you (which is how I learned what an actuary is)

The FM course was taught by a new prof, Dr. Schlieper. 4 of us continued through the summer as an independent study since we only made it through amortization. I'm signed up to take FM on 24 AUG. Terrified.

I was simply pointing out that he/she referred to me as "quality" (should I put that on my resume?)
