These threads seem so fun.
I'd like to lose 1lb a week this year, for the whole year.
Background: I have been sedentary and eating like crap for a few years. I'm going to eat well and cut back on drinking (to one glass of beer a night and two on weekend nights, or equivalent). I am also going to start playing tennis again in earnest (shooting for twice a week and maybe three times this summer when I can play outside). I'm also joining a soccer league this winter. In addition to 3-5 sports sessions a week I'll be lifting weights 3 times a week.
My weights so far:
Date Weight Loss Cumulative Loss
01/01/07 225.6
01/08/07 224.6 -1 -1
Week one was allright food wise until the weekend which was bad. I also only exercised twice. This week has been really good food wise so far. I've been to the gym twice, play tennis tommorrow and meet with a trainer at the gym sunday.

It is good to have incremental goals, but if your goal is to lose about 50 pounds this year, you will almost certainly find the last 25 harder to lose than the first 25. Luckily, if you are really making nutritional changes and backing them up with exercise right now, it should be easy (doable may be the better word) to average more than a pound a week initially once you get going.

Yeah I would like to lose weight faster.
If I can trust my body fat scale to be precise (not accurate) I've lost 5 pounds of fat as of the 22nd. I'm not sure I trust it though. I don't think I've gained 2.4 pounds of muscle (though I did start lifting). I did eat a lot of salty stuff and drink a lot the last weekend, which could have affected my measurements in any number of ways.

Beginning monday I've been journaling my food/beer and I'm going to stick to 1800 calories and a bit more (maybe up to 2200) on days where I do something more strenuous than 30-60 minutes at the gym. I'll tweak this after a couple of weeks to try to dial in on 2lbs per week weightloss. I've probably been averaging 3000 calories a day during January and losing almost a lb a week so I doubt I'll have to go lower than this.
I was below 1800 calories Monday and Tuesday and on my way to making it today so a modicum of discipline and the journaling is successful so far.
I'm also going to work with a personal trainer once a week for the next 3 months.
Just for teh Baron I'll set a goal of 200 lbs on Monday April 30. That would be 25.6 lbs lost in 17 weeks for the year.

Since I ate substancially less this week than in the preceeding weeks I would expect some of that to be water.

remilard....you don't happen to coach basketball in Maine, do you?
http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2007/02/02/coach_fired_for_check_manhood_comment/
LEEDS, Maine --A high school coach who told his players at halftime to reach into their pants to "check their manhood" before returning to the basketball court was fired.
Mike Remillard was confronted after Leavitt Area High School Principal Patrick Hartnett learned that the coach told his players that the Jan. 23 game against Mount Ararat "was about who had the biggest (male genitalia) in town," Hartnett said in a statement.

Unfortunately I have no relation to this stud.
Also unfortunately, my last name is not remilard so we are probably not related.
I also never coached HS basketball, I am a sham.

Depends on how big your glasses are. http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/441619/2/istockphoto_441619_pitcher_of_beer.jpg

I have all sizes!
Depending on the beer I consider a glass to be enough to be 150-200 calories. That would usually be in the range of 8-16 ounces.
A place in town serves a lot of big beers (like samichlaus which is 14%) in liters. That would be an easy way to cheat if I didn't tie the serving size to something.

The good news is that I have lost over 10 lbs this year. The bad news is that 3 lbs in 3 weeks isn't the pace I need to be at.
I'll admit that my eating/drinking in the past 3 weeks has not been as good as I would like. Not bad per se, but I need to do better.
Also, according the my bodyfat scale I have gained a couple pounds of muscle over these three weeks. I meet with my trainer tommorrow and he will measure my bodyfat (as he did a month or so ago) and if his measurements suggest the same as mine wrt adding muscle I won't feel so bad.
It looks like I have 9 weeks to lose 15 pounds and reach my medium term goal of 200 by the end of April. I'll keep pushing the intensity of the workouts and the quality of my diet and I am sure I can make it.

1 pound per week is NOT a bad thing, and some would argue it's the optimal pace for keeping the weight off long-term. Just something to remember.

I agree. Try thinking of it this way remilard, if in 6 months you were at 189, would you be happy?
Don't solve a long-term problem with a short-term solution. That's what I keep telling myself. For me at least, this process is as much about learning to eat/live/exercise differently, as it is about losing weight. If I do these things better, the weight will take care of itself.
I think you are doing just fine. Keep up the great work.

you're right...it's not a diet, it needs to be a lifestyle change...
also, the biggest things I've heard mentioned in helping to lose weight is:
1. take a multi-vitamin
2. drink a lot of water
3. make sure you get enough sleep
those things alone will make a big difference

I don't think 1 helps you lose weight, it just makes sure that you aren't nutritionally deficient (since a lot of dieters eat a lot of crap). My dr. told me that if I eat a balanced diet it isn't necessary.

Yeah good points. I shouldn't knock success. It took me 5 years to gain the weight and it is more important that I lose it for good before I get old enough to have health problems than to lose it in a couple of months.
I could watch my water intake a little better. I do pretty well on the sleep and vitamin though.
I got measured at the gym tonight and according to their equipment I have lost 6 scale pounds in 4 weeks and gained 2 pounds of muscle. I think my home scale showed 7 lbs lost in 4 weeks but I weight at home nude in the morning and at the gym clothed in the evening so close enough.
The 2 lbs of muscle gain is encouraging because it means I really lost 2 more pounds of fat than the scale showed and I know it will pay dividends down the road.
