AT&T sells it's wireless division to Cingular which spends a ton of money rebranding it as Cingular to turn around and become "The new at&t"?
How stupid is that?
I seem to recall that a ton of money was spent to come up with the name Exxon. There were jokes at the time about "double cross," but they are still around. And they haven't changed the name again.

Isn't this news over a month old? (and that's just "old" to the general public; ppl who pay attention to industry news have known it was coming since late last year).

No more stupid than GE "re-branding" its insurance companies as "GE Insurance Solutions" even though they were planning to dump them- and did, about year later. Now they're part of Swiss Re (except the division sold to Berkshire). Wonder how much they spent on "re-branding".
It's a shame about Cingular- I liked the logo, even though I'm a longtime AT&T customer.

Yeah, they did, they added a Mobil at the end.
