I know a lot of you are on the AO. Why have we not posted here yet?

Okay, I went to NYU for grad school in math.... which is not in Stern.

Does that count?

I did the math program as well, although undergrad, not grad. I definitely endorse the non-Stern aspect. :toast:

Campbell, did you get a PHD or just a masters at Courant?

I'm interested in going to Courant for a grad degree as well. YAY!!!!!

I got a masters degree (I was in the PhD program, but I never finished my dissertation.)

why? You were so close..

PHD math from courant would have been phenomenal!

Various reasons. One of which was I was nowhere close to finishing the dissertation, and I had been in grad school 6 years. Time to get on with life.

one more for the good guys. I went to NYU as well, class of 200X...recently. How recently did you get your Master's from Courant, Campbell? I was an office assistant there my entire 4 yrs, so I'm sure i've made copies (LOL) for you at some point if you were around then. I worked for Larry Cohen if that means anything.

Ha - I remember Larry. And him selling those lecture notes (I still have them, too, sitting here in my cube. I haven't had much call for Varadhan's notes so far, but you never know.)

I was at Courant from 1996 - 2002 (the masters came in 1998). I didn't have to copy much that often; I was on a couple fellowships, and didn't have to teach too many semesters.

Ok, i see. I was just starting as you were going out...Larry was/is a character. Yup, I remember the days when he sold lecture notes, which eventually phased out by the time i left. I studied actuarial science, but it took me some time before ALOT of the things I saw on the notes/hw assignments I copied started to make sense. Larry prepared me well for an actuarial career.

I will definitely look into checking out your seminar for Exam 4/C, now that I understand your qualifications...Courant is the Rolls Royce of mathematical/computer sciences! Take care

Now, Varadhan's lecture notes on Probability & Stochastic processes are available as separate books in the series 'Courant Lecture Notes' published by AMS. What other lecture courses were created by Varadhan? Math Statistics?

campbell

Yes, I have all those. Indeed, when I checked my extra book drawer (I have to use my cube volume effectively, so many of my books are in a file cabinet) Varadhan's mathematical stats notes were on top. I took Stochastic Processes with Varadhan when I was there, and the final was an oral exam, 1-on-1. For his probability course, we were given a take-home exam, which we were given up to the next semester to hand back in. Cantor functions featured prominently.

Were you an undergraduate? How recently did you graduate? I was Class of 2003 and continued to go to a lot of the actuarial society meetings as an alum.

I was an undergrad at Stern and graduated in 2006. If you are who I think you are (based on your username), then you already know me and then I actually first met you my freshman year during the actuarial society meetings, and you currently work with a former colleague of mine whom I worked with while I was interning at a reinsurer. Enough hints?

Undergrad in Econ here.

CAS or Stern?

I have been reaching out to the leaders of the actuarial society at NYU hoping to come in and speak to you guys. Not much feedback yet.

Now now - GSAS here, and there's nothing wrong with CAS.....

Anyway, howdy!

I am CAS as well, and consider myself quite fortunate. :-D

Well, we CAS people seem to have a harder time getting jobs than Sternies :( I guess NYU is better than Podunk State but yeah....:-D:-D

Maybe. I actually found myself with more interviews than most others in my class. My advantage was that I had actuarial internships during the school year, which was a lot easier to do as a CAS math major than a Stern business major.

Maybe if I was at Stern, I wouldn't have bombed so many entry level interviews, but everyone has his or her learning curves.... :-D.

I guess things are different for STEM majors lol but Stern Econ>>CAS Econ IMO :D

hi all!

undergrad stern alum here :) and having an actuarial internship during the school/summer year does help very much. I think it's one of the reasons I'm currently working in the actuarial field instead of having to look for something non-actuarial lol
