I haven't posted in here much, but I have been keeping up on the Montreal thread to know when I could expect PD approval... I was figuring I would just end up in Texas, but it looks like I get to play the waiting game now...
July 30th will be 6 weeks exactly from my PD submission date (6/18).
If I get approved in time, I'll go to Atlanta... but looks like most submissions are taking 6+ weeks, so I don't know if I'll make it or not...

I can't for the life of me figure out what the deadline is for. If it fills up prior to the deadline, then they close the session. If the session is not full as of the deadline, they keep accepting people.
All I can say is they have an idea of how many PDs are in the queue, and they can estimate how many will qualify for a FAC as a result of exam results in July, so maybe July 30th is the best guess of when the September FAC will be full.
Anybody have any other ideas?
im gonna crash the FAC party! WOOT WOOT!!!

I didn't realize they accepted applications after the deadline if the seminar isn't full. I'm expecting approval no earlier than 8/17, so there's probably no hope for me in Atl anyway, but who knows. How many seats are at the FAC?
best wishes for those expecting (or just hoping for!) results today!!!

Generally it is around 125 people. However, some locations can accomodate a larger group. The FAC held in Atlanta in March had 192 people.
Due to changes in the exam process and the large group of people trying to complete their PD this year, there are more qualifying for FSA in 2007, which is why the March FAC was expanded, and why they added a 5th FAC.
Starting in 2008, the FAC will be expanded to include a 3rd day and another requirement, so I think the SOA is trying to accomodate the larger-than-expected numbers this year before the new requirements go into place.

just remember, this FAC was schedule kinda last minute (in the grand scheme of things) so it might not be able to accomodate as many people as march. then again, maybe it can.

Just an FYI -- I know someone who submitted his PD the same day I did (the SOA received paper copies June 18th)....
He called the SOA office and talked to them about Atlanta. He was told that he would currently be around 110th in line and there are 100 spots left for Atlanta. And that he should expect to hear about his PD on August 3rd (6 weeks + Friday).
Just thought this might help some people know where they stand.

I wonder if they were counting people who passed CSP too. If this rate keeps up, the Nov FAC should fill up pretty fast after the Atlanta FAC is maxed out.

Well, depending on what date they called the SOA office, they would know how many people passed the CSP and for how many that was the last requirement.
But I have a feeling they might not have been counting the CSP-passers. For how many people will that be the last piece, as opposed to PD being the last bit?

It is not when you submit electronically, but when the paper copy is received at the SOA office. That is when it is "officially" received.

Yep...I submitted electronically May 22, but because my advisor isn't in my office and we had a little mix-up with the paper copies of the original signatures, I didn't send the SOA my paper copy until June 8. I e-mailed the SOA to check my status hoping that maybe they would consider my "received date" to be May 22, but they told me that my plan wasn't "received" until June 11.
So I'm officially on week 4 for the paper copy - but on week 7 for my electronic copy. Not really sure what the point of submitting electronically was then...

The rate I was quoted (with out group discount) was $189. Gee, a negative group discount.
excuse me for sticking my nose in the Hotlanta thread, but have you checked travelocity? I think the hotel rate I ended up getting was about half of the group discount rate listed in the FAC materials. Of course if your company's paying for all of it then it doesn't matter too much.
Have fun in Atlanta :-)
IIRC, this happened to me with the APC.
The APC listed the group rate at $259. I was one of the last registrants for the course, so I reserved the hotel late in the process. All of the group rooms by that time had been reserved, but there was another room available. The price? $209.
I was thinking, maybe for that price, it's tucked away in a remote corner of the hotel, where it's a 10-minute walk just to get to the elevator or something. Nope - when you step out of the door, you take 5 steps and you're in the elevator area.

you can fax them in if you're paying by credit card, so it not like you have to get it mailed in on time, but I'd still check in and ask what's up. i know they've been busy, might just be an oversight with trying to get the CSPers all signed up and everything
Not that i'm blaming Campbell and the others for the delay :)

It took 3-4 weeks for them to bill me. I finally broke down and sent a "did you get my money" email, and they said yes, they were planning to process a bunch of payments together closer to the session filling up.

i wouldn't worry. i changed my guest thing a late last week and they said it'd still be a couple weeks before they ran the payments through

Feeling my creative juices flowing now it's almost here....
I like to write math parody songs (http://wiki.mathuniverse.com/index.php?title=Math_songs_and_poems), so I've decided to strike out and start writing actuarial parody songs for our banquet:
[note: I am not an FSA....yet. But I will be when I sing these.]
(to "When I'm 64" by the Beatles)
Nine exams after two thousand and two
Seems much longer ago
My last step was passing that APMV
I got transfer credits, no modules for me
If I had scored on it less than a 6
I wouldn't be here today
No more exams now
I've got some free time now
that I'm an FSA
that one I'm still working on.
......
(to the tune of "Yesterday")
FSA
I've got those letters after some delay
Now I don't have any more study days
For now I am an FSA
Actuary
Not exactly what I thought I'd be
as a kid, planning life at 33
But now I am an
actuary
Life contingencies
put most people ill at ease
But not my compadres
a-sub-n, q-sub-x
and Excel double-checks
It's our life as FSAs
FSA
All that effort brought us here today
Risk is our opportunity, quoth the SOA
And now we all are FSAs
mmmm mmmm mmm mmm
mmm
mmm mmmm
that one is complete in verses, but I'm definitely open to edit suggestions.

What, the certificate with you name and date the FSA was acheived, isn't enough?

I know - sounds ridiculous. But I have to send electronic proof to corporate HQ. Today I resorted to copying my certificate (shrinking it down to 8 1/2 by 11), then scanning it and emailing it.
For those of you that have to go through so much effort to "prove" that you are officially FSA, does your company have a track record of folks lying about it?

Well Done, E! Well Done!
In our company, you do not have to show anything after you pass any exams. All you have to do is to let your boss know that you pass something, and your boss will take care of anything.

Same here. It's hard to imagine someone in this field abusing such an "honor system," but I guess anything's possible. I suppose I can also understand situations in companies where actuaries are more comingled with other professionals there would be more need to work through red tape for any kind of raise or job grade advancement.

Okay, it seems that the FAC fee hasn't even been charged to my credit card. What are everybody else's experiences? I imagine FAC staff are still busy, but I thought I would've been charged before I even went.... (I emailed fac@soa.org, but haven't gotten a reply yet.)

I got my certificate - my concern is mainly submitting my expense report, which I need to do ASAP after the charges post. What with all the Jewish Holidays now, it's hard for me to gauge how quickly the reimbursement will occur.

Someone asked at the registration table, and they said that they hadn't been processed yet and likely wouldn't be processed until this week.

Our company wasn't strict on proof of passing the FAC, but they do require a copy of the gradeslip after every exam taken, pass or fail.

But at least we've got proof, other than our big pieces of paper, now.

From what I understand, some people are waiting on bonuses/raises until official word was given from the society. I think it matters to them.

Yes, my boss wants the official SOA transcript. This was true for passing exams, too: it wasn't good enough to have your number on the passlist, you needed the actual pass slip you get from the SOA afterwards.

Jesus - if they didn't trust you, why did they hire you?
Thanks for the explanation, I was genuinely curious.

I don't think it has so much to do with trust from my boss as some sort of corporate HR policy.
My boss is very good about backdating raises, so we're not penalized for something like an SOA annual meeting getting in the way of the SOA transcript being updated. It's just a little annoyance, because I go to the SOA website everyday to see if it's updated. For the August FAC, I noticed people's directory entries got updated before the list was posted, and this time it's evidently going the other way.

FYI...I went to the August FAC, and my official transcript still doesn't show FAC as an item like it did for APC (even through the SOA Directory is updated to show my FSA). However, in the "address field" of the transcript, it gives my name followed by the magical phrase "FSA, MAAA".
I think our directory entries may have been updated more quickly than usual because they had to give us voting power in the election.
