"The most thoroughly and relentlessly d*mned, banned, excluded, condemned, forbidden, ostracized, ignored, suppressed, repressed, robbed, brutalized and defamed of all d*mned Things is the individual human being. The social engineers, statisticians, psychologists, sociologists, market researchers, landlords, bureaucrats, captains of industry, bankers, governors, commissars, kings and presidents are perpetually forcing this d*mned Thing into carefully prepared blueprints and perpetually irritated that the d*mned Thing will not fit into the slot assigned it. The theologians call it a sinner and try to reform it. The governor calls it a criminal and tries to punish it. the psychologist calls it a neurotic and tries to cure it. Still, the d*mned Thing will not fit into their slots.

In yiddish, this means "a religious person". My WC handle is frum613. The 613 is how many commandments can be derived from the Pentateuch.

Well in the last days of the old forum Traci was explaiming Patience to us so much I started thinking it was my name.

My first arch-rival, back in the days before the CAS boards first required a login name and password, called himself "Thinker." I started using "Thought" as a way of saying that it's okay to reach a conclusion once in a while. I've used it ever since over long stretches of time both here and in the WC.

<font size=2>Can't tell you specifically, 'cause I'd have to give away my real name (as if I haven't given away enough information for you guys to figure out who I am anyway...)

Let's just say my real-life nickname used to be "Le Monsieur _____", where "_____" is my first name.

Various b******ized mispronunciations later, my friends had thoroughly defiled the French culture with our tongue-in-cheek stereotypes (picture a sad clown/mime on a unicycle, with a glass of wine in one hand and a plate of cheese in the other, on his way to a Jerry Lewis movie), and my name had morphed through "meezoo", "kazoo", and eventually a simple, hearty "Hau, hau, hau!" At one point, the original nickname had been translated into English and I was known simply as "The Mister".

A previous alter-ego, "Voter, Schmoter", is pretty self-explanatory, as I had used it exclusively in political threads, mostly during elections.

Franchise
12-12-2001, 05:38 PM
This is the original name I selected back in the prior incarnation of the CAS board. I have kept it the whole time, and have never used anything else.

At the time, my favorite wrestler was "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, ECW World Heavyweight Champion. Since then, he has pretty much fallen off the face of the earth, but I will not let the name die.

To explain things further, Douglas had an ongoing hatred for "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, so that's why I occasionally do a little sparring with The Nature Boy around here.

Damn, Dirty Ape
12-12-2001, 05:40 PM
I first posted as the Ape in a Gun-lobby thread started by Kimi (our friendly neighborhood gun-wacko). Someone was posting as Charlton Heston, and I wanted to be the guy who opposed him (from Planet of the Apes, for those who still don't get it).

If you haven't seen my alter-ego on BBC, then you've missed a treat. This personna allows me to be at times, pleasant; utterly nasty; and even pleasantly nasty.

Usually my nastiness is reserved for the "Politics" thread. And for "flirt" threads, but that's different.

If I thought I could get away with a second personna again, I'd revive "Concerned Mom." But our administrator, Cruella -- I mean Traci -- wouldn't like that. And it is not wise to offend Traci. It is also not easy.

I was Nicholai Hel on the very occasional times I posted on the CAS. Welcome back, Thought. I was intrigued by one of the threads you started in the WC.

Pues, primero para mostrar una vinculación con la cultura romantica y sobre todo española.

My name also represents a willingness to support idealistic concepts even though they might appear foolish from a practical perspective.

The fact that it´s just a short step, alphabetically speaking, from Cervantes to cervesa may have had an influence as well.

My name is a really supposed to look like Neller only I use ones for the 'L's. I got it from one of those hotmail accounts where Neller had already been taken. And Neller is a nickname that my college roommate calls me. It comes from my given first name which I do not wish to reveal.

Feeling nostalgic, so here's what I said the first time this came up on the WC:My name is from the lead character in the musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". No great significance (although I do like the play), I was just trying to think of a pseudo-nym and came up with Pseudo-lus.

JMO
12-13-2001, 10:42 AM
I think I was originally called JMO as a derogatory reference to my signature tag line, "Just My Opinion." I used it when posting from work to make it clear that my opinions (which are numerous and wide-ranging) are not those of my employer, which has a process and official spokesman.

I actually like the sound of it.

Of course, since company rules prohibit posting in "chat boards" and context is not clear on whether that includes professional bulletin boards, I have been keeping a rather low profile lately.

Effa
12-13-2001, 11:23 AM
To the best of my knowledge, this is a creation of the 50 guys on my floor in residence in 1st year of college. Effa is short for "ah fer f*** sakes". More often than not it is said in a high pitched whiny tone - and it became a greeting as well. I'm sure none of this makes much sense, but it had a certain bonding charm to it at the time.

Coincidentally, it also sounds similar to the SOA exam I wrote this fall and, using the definition above, simultaneously reveals my feelings about my performance on that exam.

42
12-13-2001, 11:24 AM
Contrary to popular belief, 42 is neither my I.Q., my age, or my waist size. (I wish, for all three!) 42 comes from the Douglas Adams sci-fi novel "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - sort of like Monty Python, but set in space.

In one of the book's many asides, it discusses a race of people who build the largest, most powerful computer in the entire universe. It answers one question after another for them, until somebody gets the bright idea to ask it for "the meaning of life, the universe, and everything". The computer answers "Hmm, that's a good question. It should take me approximately 10,000 years to solve." It then slowly grinds to a slow humm as it dedicates 100% of its CPU to answering the question. 10,000 years later, it jubilantly reports its answer: 42. The people then decide that, if 42 is the answer, they need to build an even bigger, better computer to determine what the question must have really been in the first place.

I chose this pseudonym because it was the most inappropriate one for me that I could think of. "42" is the epitomy of being too concise, but as you can see, I never say in 5 words what I can instead say in 5,000!

Once upon a time, in my yoot, my friends and I would go to this little Spanish café called 'Dulcinea'. It was near our school. We'd go there for 'chocolate con churros' and this rich dessert called 'tocino del cielo'. Heavenly!

12-13-2001, 12:11 PM
My handle comes from a nickname I gave myself some time ago to be completely pompous in a self-effacing way--anyone who's ever seen me can verify that I am, in fact, NOT all that. Well, except maybe for my significant other.

To continue 42's explanation (because I think it's funny and somewhat relevant to an actuarial forum), the computer that was built to deduce the question to the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything (which was discovered to be 42) was Earth, with all living things being the CPU processes. Sadly, just shortly before it was scheduled to deliver its results, the Earth was destroyed to build an interspace bypass.

The last survivor from Earth, who got away by hitchhiking on a passing starship, crash landed on a primitive planet later in the series. He fashioned a Scrabble set out of wood and tried to get the primitives to play with him. At some point he realized that since he was on the earth just before it was scheduled to give its results, maybe his subconscious held the key. He put all the Scrabble tiles in a hat and chose them randomly, writing down the sequence. He came up with:
"What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"
Hilarious stuff (to me at least). It works on a lot of levels.

Back when eveyone was using course names for their names, I resisted the urge. "Casual" refers to my stance on the exams. I casually read the material for a few months then cram as much into memory as possible the last month (3 days away from starting again). If I don't pass, big deal, I'm still employed. :) I, too, avoided other nicknames for purposes of this forum.

Unhallowed wight,
grim and greedy, he grasped betimes,
wrathful, reckless, from resting-places,
thirty of the thanes, and thence he rushed
fain of his fell spoil, faring homeward,
laden with slaughter, his lair to seek.
Then at the dawning, as day was breaking,
the might of Grendel to men was known;
then after wassail was wail uplifted,
loud moan in the morn…

But the evil one ambushed old and young
death-shadow dark, and dogged them still,
lured, or lurked in the livelong night
of misty moorlands: men may say not
where the haunts of these Hell-Runes be.
Such heaping of horrors the hater of men,
lonely roamer, wrought unceasing,
harassings heavy.

quentin cassidy
10-01-2002, 08:41 AM
I thought I had responded here already, but I must be thinking of an old CAS forum thread. My handle is the main character of the novel 'Once A Runner.' I, like Cassidy, also ran the mile in college. My favorite exerpt:

Cassidy sought no euphoric interludes. They came, when they did, quite naturally and he was content to enjoy them privately. He ran not for crypto-religious reasons, but to win races, to cover ground fast. Not only to be better than his fellows, but better than himself. To be faster by a tenth of a second, by an inch, by two feet or two yards than he had been the week or year before. He sought to conquer the physical limitations placed upon him by a three-dimensional world (and if Time is the fourth dimension, that too was his province). If he could conquer the weakness, the cowardice in himself, he would not worry about the rest; it would come. Training was a rite of purification; from it came speed, strength. Racing was a rite of death; from it came knowledge. Such rites demand, if they are to be meaningful at all, a certain amount of time spent precisely on the Red Line, where you can lean over the manicured putting green at the edge of the precipice and see exactly nothing.

Anything else that comes out of that process is by-product. Certain compliments and observations made Cassidy uneasy; he explained that he was a runner; just an athlete, really, with an absurdly difficult task. He was not a health nut, was not out to mold himself a stylishly slim body. He did not live on nuts and berries; if the furnace was hot enough, anything would burn, even Big Macs. He listened carefully to his body and heeded strange requests. Like a pregnant woman, he sometimes sought artichoke hearts, pickled beets, smoked oysters. His daily toil was arduous; satisfying on the whole, but not the bounding, joyous, nature romp described in the magazines. Other runners, real runners, understood it quite well.

Quentin Cassidy knew what the mystic-runners, the joggers, the runner-poets, the Zen runners and others of their ilk were saying. But he also knew that their euphoric selves were generally nowhere to be seen on dark, rainy mornings. They primarily wanted to talk it, not do it. Cassidy very early on understood that a true runner ran even when he didn't feel like it, and raced when he was supposed to, without excuses and with nothing held back. He ran to win, would die in the process if necessary, and was unimpressed by those who disavowed such a base motivation. You are not allowed to renounce that which you never possessed, he thought.

The true competitive runner, simmering in his own existential juices, endured his melancholia the only way he knew how: gently, together with those few others who also endured it; yet very much alone. He ran because it grounded him in basics. There was both life and death in it; it was unadulterated by media hype, trivial cares, political meddling. He suspected it kept him from that most real variety of schizophrenia that the republic is currently sprouting like mushrooms on a stump.

Running to him was real, the way he did it the realest thing he knew. It was all joy and woe, hard as diamond; it made him weary beyond comprehension. But it also made him free.

My mom was from Petoskey, Michigan. A lot of her family still lives there. We took our summer vacations there or at an inland lake near there. It's a beautiful place in the summer (and in the winter if you like snow).

Petoskey was named after Native American Chief Petosega. My grandpa used to like to tell this story. I liked my grandpa. I like Petoskey. I mistyped "Petoskey" when I registered for the AO. I left it that way. Sometimes, I have trouble logging in because I spell "Petoskey" correctly (or "Petosky" incorrectly).

I chose my name in honor of Malcolm X (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/), the person outside my family who has had the greatest influence on my life.

Reading his Autobiography when I was 12 or 13 was literally a life-changing experience. It explained so many of the things I saw in the world but never entirely understood. To this day, his life and his words continue to inspire me.

And I'm probably the only person in the world who has a picture of Malcolm in his wallet. :spnner:

They don't call me Minnesota Fats because I'm morbidly obese.

Oh wait, maybe they do.

As it turns out, I have the same birthday as you (well, sort of, the real Minnesota Fats) as well as Dennis Taylor (northern Irish snooker player).

Alto Reed on a Tenor Sax
11-09-2007, 11:54 PM
HERE IS THE STORY OF MY USER NAME:

One time, when I first was starting out on sax, I was playing a musical, Gypsy. I played tenor sax for three performances, using an alto sax reed, and never even noticed until I broke the reed. When I replaced it with a correctly sized reed, I saw what I had done.

My teacher at the time was playing the show, too. He said, "Wow, you were able to play an alto reed on a tenor sax, for three whole nights? You must be damn good player!" That may be true. But it doesn't change the fact that I was a dumbass for not even noticing.

Someone once acccused me of being a nazi, so I thought I should put my explanation in my sig block.

I own a brown coat, btw. A girl I was engaged to at the time bought it for me. I was in the AF at the time and had just the blue coat, rather than the cool brown leather ones that the fly boys wore. She was very careful to buy the same kind that the fly boys look so cool in. Very nice brown leather jacket.

I almost broke her heart when I told her that I wasn't allowed to wear it as part of my uniform, because I wasn't a fly boy. We desk-jobbers had to wear the blue jacket. Still, I wore it with my civvies. Still a great jacket, but the zipper needs to be fixed.

Oh, and the girl? Mrs Browncoat.

(I looked for pix of both jackets on line, but gave up after diggety-six minutes.)

Do you not hear me anymore
I know it's not your thing to care
I know it's cool to be so bored
But it sucks me in when you're aloof
It sucks me in, it sucks, it works
I guess it's cool to be alone

Will you never rest
fighting the battle of who could care less
Every day you wake up late
Sometimes I wish I was that way

And you think Rockford Files is cool
But there are some things
that you would change
if it were up to you
so think about your masterpiece
watch the Rockford Files and
call to see if Paul can score some weed

Do you never rest
fighting the battle
of who could care less
unearned unhappiness
that's alright I guess

I've got this great idea
why don't we pitch it to the
Franklin ****ing Mint
Fine pewter portraits of
General Apathy and Major Boredom singing
Whatever and ever amen.
Oh well, maybe not
I'll try again
this should cheer you up for sure
see I've got your old I.D.
and you're all dressed up like the Cure

Will you never rest
fighting the battle
of who could care less
unearned unhappiness
you're my hero I confess

Shove me under you again
I can't wait for this to end
sober, empty in the head
I know I can never win

Why should I have to wait
I'll just look the other way

We left this land of shiny lights
I wish I may, I wish I might
when all these dreams have come to end
you'll wish you were, you're not my friend

I can see you suffocate
I can find no other way
try to make you saturate
I can be your enemy

Why should I have to wait
I'll just look the other way

We left this land of shiny lights
I wish I may, I wish I might
When all these dreams have come to end
you'll wish you were, you're not my friend

You said you'd love
to see the end
the long hard road
That I have been

When all these dreams have come to end
you'll wish you were, you're not my friend

Blind eyes shine through

Back in college we played a fair amount of wiffle ball. These games invariably involved consumption of a fair amount of barley & hops or Yokon Jack and occasionally other things.* Being a huge Yankees fan and running down my share of flyballs one of my buddies said "hey he's like the Yankee Clipper" upon hearing this another buddy responded "no, he's more like the Yankee Tripper" and the name just stuck.

*wiffle balls leave amazing trails.

It started when we were bored in AP Physics in high school. We referenced ourselves in them, and I was known as Pills there. They all started calling me Pills, and it stuck.

I wish it was more exciting, really.
