I suck but may be interested, if it would work out. Haven't even probably played in 10 years +.

I second the second part of this statement for myself.

Thus, I'm out for a season or two -- playing Chess Tiger and maybe Hiarcs soon will sharpen me up and I'll be back.

I'm way behind on reading too...

I'm gonna keep swinging away at three checks for a while longer.

Ya'll have fun.

Darth.

I'm curious: how long does an average game last and what's the time commitment? I read this in one of the stickied threads:
Intro to Actuarial Outpost Chess Events

Welcome to chess on the Actuarial Outpost. We have over 30 players who regularly play in the events we have here. We play chess correspondence style on our very own chess server. Players are generally expected to make at least one move per day, though many move more rapidly.

Thanks.

Edit: Also, how does one get suspended?

Abstract Actuary
08-15-2007, 08:50 AM
The games can last anywhere from 3 days to 3 months depending on how fast the two players move. You have two weeks to make every move. Many players make about 1 move per day (probably at night). Some players make their moves almost immediately after you make your move. If you have two of those players whole games can be finished in the first week.

I don't think anyone really gets suspended. A player recently signed up for this last season and then never even made a move or accepted his challenges, which almost never occurs.

The games disappear from our server if a move isn't made in 2 weeks. So technically that is the longest you can wait to make a move (I guess if someone recorded the game you could replay it to that point). I never wait that long to move (usually it's between 2 minutes and 2 hours).

By the way, I arbitarily reversed course, and in my priority for the pairings, I decided it was more important to even a player's colors inside the season than it was to make sure that the colors between a matchup were the opposite of when two players last played each other in league play. However, in the future, I will make it a priority to avoid having a certain pair play the same colors against each other three league games in a row.

I checkmated the Abstract Actuary as black in the following game.

Midway through this I was reminded of a Yasser Seirawan comment from his annotation of a game for Inside Chess, when he paused to write disdainfully, "I sometimes wonder what the Najdorf has to do with chess."

Game 2: waiting on move 13
Game 3: opponent hasn't even responded yet
Game 4: 59 moves and done

I defeated rekrap as white. This game was fairly close most of the time; my one big messup was move 17, I did not anticipate the obvious response for black and there were much better alternatives. It was also eerie turning down a couple of draw offers when things were close, but it paid off in the long run. Good game!

Don't we play one game on each side?

No, just one.

Lots of people will play just for fun if you're looking to pick up extra games. Playing's the only way to get better. I had an epic series of exhibition games with Charlie Brown...we must have played 50 games and I must have lost about 49 of them. It wasn't fun, but I consider myself a better player now than I was then.

Good game! I don't know why I let myself walk into a pawn forking minors situation. The sad thing is - I set up that trap for myself!! And there was no getting out of it, though I tried (and hoped you made a mistake). In the end, it was evident that your two bishops would dominate and my extra pawns would all fall.

One day I'll beat you in regular chess. Now it looks like you and I have a date with 3-checks!! Good luck!

Wow! Having played chess myself, I can see what an exciting game this was. Mel-o really screwed up on move 21 - needlessly giving up his minor. Up till then, it's cool how he wins Kohl's rook.

Then Mel-o-pushes his pawn and with all kinds of threats, Kohl couldn't answer all of them. At times it looks like he might get a back-rank mate on Mel-o, but it never came to pass. An exciting game, you two!!!

Hey - I'm back from the dead. It's great to be alive again! Thanks for putting up my games, Mel. But did you really need to add the commentary?

Those were both fun games, by the way. It looks like I'm done for this season. 2 and 2 for me!

Cynical Realist

Rick G (white) - CR ends in a draw with both threatening mate and a perpetual check by black. A bit of a wild ending.

I at one point have both knights on the edge of the board, always a strategic place for them. White is crushing the King Side, but leaves his King vulnerable and unprotected in the back. Eventually I gamble, I can infiltrate the queen side and get a perpetual at the least and he can't mate me by one move in the interim.

The alternative would have been to fall back and defend, but with badly placed pieces, it might have been tough. OTOH, white's bishop is pretty much not doing much either but holding the Q-Pawn.

Good Game Rick G.
