MAS versus MAS/MRM

Have any GSU MAS alums on the AO done the MAS/MRM, or does everyonve just do the MAS and get a job?

I'm finishing the MAS in May '08. I thought about the MAS/MRM, but trying to talk the Mrs. into moving to New York or overseas right after graduation would take too much work.

I have not done either, but I think the MRM is the better degree since the MAS doesn't give you much you won't get from the exam process anyway.

The MAS does have some good cross discipline classes like Theory of Risk Sharing, Financial Engineering, and electives like Corporate Risk Management (for those of us interested in enterprise risk management).

I like the MAS program because it will reduce my travel time to ASA to about 2 years after graduation. Knowing the exam material early will allow me to focus on practical working knowlege after I graduate thus making me more valuable as a career changer.

My interest in the dual MAS/MRM comes from my interest in the merging insurance and financial markets, but I'm not sure that an extra year of school has a positive NPV.

Experience is very important in this profession. I'd say you would gain more from a year of work than an extra year of school.

I debated adding MRM to my MAS, but ultimately chose the field over the classroom. Having already been in school for a long time (I also have an MBA, from another school) I was concerned about having a resume with too high of an education-to-experience ratio.

On the other hand, the longer you stay away from the classroom, the harder it is to go back to it, so there's a case to be made for getting all your schooling out of the way right away.

An internship along the way would help your cause should you choose the school option.

I finished the MAS. Considering the economic environment, I'm glad I didn't stick around for the MRM. I have a good job, and I'm gaining experience. It's nice to be paying off debt and not accumulating it.

From my experience, MAS has little value in itself. That may be a bit harsh but no one actually asked me anything about my MAS degree during my interviews, ever. 1/4 of my MAS classmates never graduated because they passed exams and found jobs after 1 year into the program. The fact that you went to GSU actuarial program probably has more value than getting the MAS degree there. GSU has so many alumni, especially in southeast region and our professors (former and current) and our seminars put our names out there. Of course, it all comes to how many exams you have and GSU prepares you for that.
