Gail,
I'm sure you've received your share of mail recently, and I'd like to add my
own thoughts.
While I suspect many of my views reflect those of many of my friends and
fellow students, I speak only for myself. I bear no ill will toward the CAS,
and in fact count on its future to protect my livelihood. In that regard I
try to point out things that, from my perspective, have a negative impact on
the profession and the Society. I have posted on some issues using my real
name. << Links deleted >> At other
times, I have posted simply as Mrs Nesbit, as in the case of my recent
"civil disobedience" campaign, ending with my final post as Mrs Nesbit:
http://www.casact.org/students/forums/noncgi/Forum14/HTML/003052.html
For the record, I have received no warnings from the COOS regarding any of
my posts (despite posting to the "Offensive words..." thread,) or my latest
action. My motivation in writing to you directly is two-fold. First and
foremost, because I believe that a great injustice has been done to many of
my friends, and second, I think continued action of the COOS along these
lines may impact the future of our Society.
Warning and banning people en masse because someone finds a (one-year-old)
thread offensive is beyond ridiculous. Many who have been warned, or have
actually been banned have added to lively discussions, and occasionally have
been of aid to others, not only on the Water Cooler, but in the Exam fora as
well. It is troubling that these students may not have access to these fora
in the future.
The future of the CAS depends on the current students, disenfranchising a
large portion of us is a step in the wrong direction. I believe that the
future "movers and shakers" of this society are the same ones who show their
interest by participating in various discussion, and show their creativity
in their postings, rather than the ones who bury their heads in books and
fly through the exams. Our future depends less on our book knowledge than
our creativity and innovation.
Through my network of friends, I have learned that the COOS will be meeting
next week. I ask that consideration be given to the following:
Reinstatement of ALL banned posters, not just those affected by the blanket
accusation of posting in an "offensive" thread.
Implementation of additional BB features, with specific consideration to the
"ignore poster" option I have seen elsewhere.
Implement some kind of "due process" before banning posters in the future.
Since I do not know the members of the COOS, I ask that you forward this to
the Committee prior to their meeting next week for their consideration.
Thank you.
Cordially,
*******, formerly known as Mrs Nesbit
