Next year, an Oscar will be awarded to the Best Animated Movie. AMPAS has announced (http://www.ampas.org/press/index.html) that the 9 eligible movies are:
"Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within"
"Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius"
"Marco Polo: Return to Xanadu"
"Monsters, Inc."
"Osmosis Jones"
"The Prince of Light"
"Shrek"
"The Trumpet of the Swan"
"Waking Life"
So, here's my question: "Where is Atlantis: The Lost Empire"? Are there any other glaring omissions from this list?

I haven't seen any of those, but my wife would vote for Shrek - she loved it. I'm not aware of any other glaring omissions.

This is not a glaring omission.

What he said.
FWIW, Shrek gets my nod as well. (Don't tell my bosses at Pixar I said that)

Shrek was hilarious, as was Monsters, Inc. Have the Shrek DVD, will own the Monsters DVD when it comes out.
Just think, next year, we'll probably have a "Clerks Animated" movie to put in the running. That would be so cool!

I watched Shrek recently. I thought it would be better, more swipes at Disney Corp.
Saw a bit of "Monsters Inc.," before I saw "Harry Potter." Hmm, ok.
I hoping that this new one, "Jimmy Neutron" will be better than those.

AMPAS has only released the names of eligible films, not those that have been nominated. My questions really are, "Why isn't 'Atlantis' eligible?" and "Are there any other glaring omissions, as in, are there any other animated films that are not on the eligibility list?"
Thanks.

From this website (http://www.digitalmediafx.com/News2001/June/062501.html):Rules for the new Best Animated Feature Film Award define an animated feature film as "a motion picture of at least 70 minutes in running time where a significant number of the major characters in the film are animated, and animation figures in no less than 75% of the picture's running time."
I don't know what rule Atlantis may have violated, but this is supposed to be the set of criteria.

I'm surprised Osmosis Jones was more than 75% animation
It is possible Atlantis was under 70 minutes

wasn't Atlantis from last year? I think Oscars are for the current year... am I in a time warp?

Atlantis was 90 something minutes long and was released in 2001.
I could not figure out a reason for its exclusion...perhaps just an oversight that will be corrected...
It's a good question though.

June 2001 & it was either 90 or 95 minutes depending on where you look.

The pictures were chosen from a submissions pool of 13, which included the German picture "Help! I'm a Fish," "Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade," "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and "Atlantis," which Disney withdrew from the race.

Just a plug for Waking Life -- it won't win, but it was excellent.

For the same reason you don't see the Colts on lists of teams that could make the playoffs. Technically, they could still make it, but we all know they won't.

Atlantis *still* isn't worth considering.
