Awesome - it goes to show that you never do lose your strength - it just takes time to get it back. IIRC, he used to play on the ICC (blitz chess) from time to time, so was probably keeping up with the game a little bit.
I just recently rejoined after 5 years away from playing regularly, and it's taken me a few months to get my old strength back - granted, I'm nowhere near GM strength, so take that as you will ;-)

Now he (Gata) has qualified for the finals of the FIDE World Cup. Should he win that he has to face Veselin Topalov in a special match to determin who will challenge the World Champion (the winner of the 2008 match Anand vs Kramnik). Details of this rather complicated cycle can be found
Topolov vs Kamsky will be great very different styles. Suprised at Ivanchuk getting knocked out early, hes a bit sporadic to begin with.

That's great! I eagerly await Nigel Short's Telegraph column singing Gata's praises.

That's great! I eagerly await Nigel Short's Telegraph column singing Gata's praises.I was there, live on the Playchess server when Nigel and Gata went at it - and Gata 'offered him out' (roars from the kibitzers: 'attaboy!!!!!!') and Nosher retorted that Gata was reverting to his father's behavior (Rustam threatened to kill Nosher during their Candidates match).
Now for a really juicy line-up, Gata reactivates his growling hunk of a father to take on Toppy's Danialov. WWW move over..........

I didn't realize that - it's a shame, because he's pretty much unable to censor himself, and as a result can be highly entertaining, though in a car-accident kind of way. I still fondly recall his whole Tony Miles meltdown....

His meltdown over Miles was sad. He had some good points, but Miles went nuts, was a sick man and did not deserve the rabid vendetta that Short would periodically launch into. He really destroyed his standing among UK players, and he's not recovered.
Nosher had a great tournament in Canada early this summer......:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops: - be sure to remind him about it if you ever cross swords with him. He certainly is entertaining.

I think one could point to quite a few events that triggered his overall slide to the point where he was suddenly battling Timman at every tournament to stay out of last.
One would be the anointment of Mickey Adams as the next "Mostly Likely Brit to Win Something Big in Chess", which I recall NS bore with ill humor ("I'm still here!").
Another was his defection to the PCA. Only someone like Kasparov could survive the whiplash when the PCA imploded and Kasparov (literally) held hands with Campomanes 4 or 5 years later...my vague memory is that Nigel was just sort of left hanging there & his invitations and prestige suffered.
