View Full Version : Dicky V is a Dook Head

After last night, who can deny it?

"Jason Williams is the second best point guard at ANY level, behind Jason Kidd."

Please.

I'd like to see him play against an Iverson or a Stoudamire or a Bibby or a Tinsley or a Payton or Marbury or even a Stockton (40ish!).

Was he even being serious?

I will agree though, that Duke has a good team and Jason Williams is one of, if not the best players in college. But to say something like that is ludicrous.

Dicky V has always irritated me. Some of the people I watch games with just think he's the coolest thing going, but he drives me nuts. During the few minutes when he slows down and tries to make an actual point, he seems tolerable. But when he is ranting and raving, I just have to hit the mute.

Dickie V is most entertaining when he is kissing Bob Knight's ass. The same Knight who belted him one when he tried to hug Knight during the filming of "Blue Chips."

I agree. I wanted to watch that game last night, but couldn't get through a few minutes of the first half.

He's a lot better when scripted in the studio, when he has time to think before foot enters mouth.

I think he's definitely biased towards Duke - he just goes on and on about them. I agree with HC, don't say Jason Williams is the 2nd best point guard in the nation at any level! Please!

I used to really like him, but I think he's turning into a parody of himself.

Obi,

I used to really like him also. I really loved the enthusiasm he brought to the table. The last few years though, I can hardly stand him. All Duke, all the time. Duke doesn't need to advertise anymore because they get it for free from Vitale.

I find him entertaining. And isn't that his job?

What, to entertain more than he disdains? I guess. We just happen to be some of the disdainers.
You, of course, are wrong for being on the wrong side. Get with the program, ttt!

I'm a Duke fan, but Dickie V's falling all over Duke drives me nuts as well! We get your point, Dickie -- move on to something else.

The one good thing that I do have to say about him, is that he's not one of those announcers who thinks that the more biting your criticism, the better announcer you are (e.g. Cris Collinsworth!) He always emphasizes the positive, which is good for college basketball.

Bob's never been a Dicky V fan, but Bob think he's gotten to into his cult following the last few years. Bob won't watch a game he's doing anymore.

"Tonight we witnessed an awesome basketball team on all cylinders," Wolfpack coach Herb Sendek said.

Sounds like something Dicky V would say

Duke was awesome, baby

I'm not a big fan of either Duke or Vitale. But I hate to admit it, he is right about Williams. Jason will be the number one pick in next year's draft and within a couple years he'll be a dominant player in the NBA. I would describe him as Isiah Thomas with more upper-body strength.

We'll see what happens when they come to College Park this weekend. Should be an awesome game, baby!

Yeah, Williams will be great in the NBA like all those other Duke studs.

His game works at the college level, but that's about it.

Grant Hill (pre-injury) and Elton Brand are good. Battier is having a fine rookie year too.
In a couple years, Williams may become one of the top 5 NBA point guards, but right now any such comparisons are ridiculous. At the very least, Kidd, Payton, Nash, Cassell, B. Davis, A. Miller, Francis, Brandon, Stockton, and Marbury all have to be considered better than him for now.

Look at how great Mateen Cleaves was in college and he hasn't even seen the court much in the NBA. (I do think Williams is better than Cleaves, but most people would've probably expected Cleaves to be a top 20 NBA point guard, and he may not even be top 50).

Yeah, those Duke players are great at the college level, but that's about it. They never seem to do well in the NBA. I would never want Grant Hill on my team. Elton Brand (18 ppg, 11 rpg) is overrated. Shane Battier (15 ppg, 5 rpg as a rookie) should never have been drafted so high. Laettner averaged 17 points per game his first five years, but he was a waste of space then. Dawkins, Ferry, and Gminski all played in the NBA for about 10 years - their game didn't translate well to the NBA. But that's about it.

Battier is good, but he's no Bonzi Wells.

All the Dickie V detractors can rest assured that Billy Packer will be on the Duke-Maryland game Sunday on CBS.

Let me be the first to say, "Shut up, Billy!" I seem to say that quite frequently when he's on a game.

Now that Maryland beat up on Duke (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/mbasketball/recap?gameId=220480087), maybe Dicky V will start to be honest and say a few realistic things about Duke!

Not to kick a dead horse or anything, but I thought this article was right on the money. Coach K was still given props while his team was being pummeled, and Gary Williams was given no respect for his team's victory. My last sentence is tainted by my subjectivity, but this guy feels similarly!

So, with 2:07 left and Maryland up 81-70, it wasn't surprising Packer would say: "Give Duke a lot of credit for not giving up at all. But on the other hand I don't think Maryland has played very well in terms of using the clock and taking advantage of the position they were in." (emphasis mine)

I disagree.

In almost every situation, every coach skates with most announcers -- they were ex-coaches. They rarely if ever criticize their former colleagues, especially Packer, Vitale, and Raftery. This example for Coach K applies to almost everybody.

Think about it ... When a team isn't playing well, how many announcers say, "They're not playing the type of game that a (insert name here)-coached team usually plays."

Billy Packer is usually the one who blames the players the most, since he has more access to coaches than any announcer. He's been called the "Coach's Announcer."

Since Coach K is on TV almost all the time, he gets more of these coaching "props" than anyone else, just because of his success and amount of time he's on TV.
