View Full Version : How many hours?

A couple people have brought this up in the results thread, but since that is not really the point of that thread, I thought I'd make a new one.

For those who have completed the module, how long is it taking you? If you could separate hours for reading vs. project, that would be helpful.

For those in the middle of the module, any comments?

Personally I have started the reading and I cannot imagine it taking 50-60 hours. I've spent no more than 3 hours and I've read all the pdfs in sections 1 and 2, plus about 2-1/2 chapters in the Wiskup book. I know that I have about 200 pages to read in the Minto book and I'm expecting that to be somewhat time consuming, but the Wiskup book is an easy read. Of course I have no idea how many slides there are. There seem to be a lot of pdf's in Section 3 but most of them are short.

Module 1 is pretty easy.

Wait till you get to Module 2. Someone needs to do a count; I'm guessing there is over 2000 pages you are assigned to read.

With dedicated effort I have been knocking out a new module every 10 days. I probably put in 40 hours reading & reviewing case studies and about 7 hours doing the project per Module. I have a need for speed (want to finish before studying for Spring exams this Feb).

ajstudies is specifically looking at DMAC, not the other FSA modules.

Ah. I've wandered into the wrong side of town.

Let's keep hours in this thread, since the other thread is really for results.

I've spent about 9 hrs so far, just on reading. I've finished the Minto book, read most of the Presentation SOS book, and pdf's for Sections 1 & 2.

I'm not going to count hours I've spent on my project so far, since those were normal work hours and not study time. Anything I do on study time I will count, and I will definitely count the time for the write up. I would guess that anyone who is using a work project would already have spent some time on their project before starting DMAC.

There are 4 sections.

Section 1 has 21 slides
Section 2 has 24 slides
Section 3 has 92 slides and the most outside reading. This one could have been broken up into two sections; one on written communication and one on oral communication.
Section 4 has 65 slides. I haven't started this one yet.

I have probably 24 hours in so far, just getting through sections 1-3. I'm going to guess that Section 4 will take most of a day since I haven't done any of the reading yet. I think I'm going to take a break from slides and reading and work on my project for this afternoon.

OK, I got a little lazy counting my hours over the weekend. I'm going to guess 10 hrs for section 4. That seems high compared to section 3, but then I had already read the textbooks for section 3 so they didn't take as long.

I only spent an hour or so gathering some data for my project on Friday. I think. I worked some during the time I was at the office. I just know I didn't put in a ton of time. Didn't really push myself over the weekend either since there was just no reason to. I expect that I have maybe 4-8 hrs of analysis, and I don't know how long it will take me to write up this thing. I will go over the requirements more carefully in the morning when I'm fresh.

ETA: Final total for reading slides, pdf's, and textbook readings: 32 hours

Final total on Project is not yet available, and I think is going to be highly variable by individual. I've spent maybe 3-4 hrs writing some notes, my appendix (background info), and a fair outline of what I think I'm going to say. I've spent a lot more hours thinking about it, but that is just how I work. With all of the module exercises I seem to need to live with the problem for a while before I can sit down and write about it. Even though this was my own problem, I still had to think about how to organize it in such a way as to meet the requirements of the module.

did anybody read the text book, required text book word by word? Thx.

those reading seems need a lot of hours...

Ummm, yes, I did, b/c I think my company expects that of me.

Besides, my company right now is over-generous with study time for DMAC. It was on their time; I DON'T use my study time for vacation days; and it was not hard reading.

But yeah, if you don't want to get anything out of this, don't do the reading. :judge:

If I start reading the textbooks in the middle of this month and stay busy with the DMAC Module (including the project), would it be realistic for me to want to finish it by the end of June?

Yes, 2.5 months should be plenty of time.
