View Full Version : March 2008 FAC

The SOA site says "Candidates will receive registration materials for the next available FAC after they have successfully completed all requirements for Fellowship. " Does that mean Exam DP passers who've passed all their requirements are going to get something in the mail? We don't need to do anything in the meantime, or are we supposed to somehow verify we have what we need?
Seems a little weird. I don't want to just wait around and then find out the March FAC is filled...

The SOA will be contacting all FAC eligible candidates, via email, with FAC registration information. Now that results have been posted, we will be updating transcripts and reviewing candidate records to identify those candidates who qualified on the basis of passing an examination from this past session. We anticipate that registration information will be distributed by the end of next week. If you have not received your package by January 25, feel free to contact me directly at msikaras@soa.org or via the FAC email box of fac@soa.org

I'm going to guess that yes it is required. It's a little weird since I took the Course 7 communication requirement, but it doesn't really matter; I figure a lot of us actuaries could really use more practice at communication skills.

How many spots are there for the March 2008 FAC? How many people qualified as a result of the Fall exam results?
bdschobel
01-23-2008, 06:37 AM
1. About 100, maybe a little more (less than usual).
2. We don't know. Those runs haven't been done yet. But don't forget that most November exam passers still need DMAC. It's close to impossible for them to make the March FAC. It's conceivable -- but we're not making any promises here!!! __ that we'll need another FAC between March and July. We'll see where we stand after March. No one wants hundreds of potential FSAs to have to wait 4 months unnecessarily.

Hi Bruce,
I received my notification (via my transcript) that I have now passed my final FSA module. With that, I'm now eligible for the FAC [I already have credit for course 7.]
Any idea when I can expect my FAC invite?

It seems to me that since the February "old style" FAC was offered for PD finishers, that there wouldn't be very many at all qualifying for the March FAC, since DMAC has only begun to be graded. Sure, there will be those few who qualified for an earlier FAC but didn't make it, and those for whom DP was the last requirement. Just doesn't seem like that would be 100 people, but who knows?
Of course that may just be wishful thinking that if my transcript is updated the day my 7 weeks are up after submitting my last module exercise, and if I am able to complete DMAC within 10 or so days of that, and if my project were graded VERY quickly, that maybe, just maybe, I could get into the March FAC instead of waiting until July.
I had really hoped for May. May is such a nicer time to travel than July...

under the old system I passed 1,2,3,4,5,7,8 and PD
I needed only the 2 FSA modules which I have completed and should be getting an updated transcript in the next couple days. Do I still have to do the new presentation even though I have PD and course 7 under the old system? Or if there is room can I try to get into one of the Feb FACS???
as well I should mention that I was also exempt from the DMAC.

I'll take this one, Bruce. amimal, you will be attending the March FAC. Many of us had credit for Course 7 and thus did not need the DMAC, but the February FAC is reserved ONLY for those for whom PD is the last requirement. Granted, this means some of us are "doubling up" on presentation requirements and practice, but that's just the way things worked out. If there's one thing actuaries could use more of (in general), it's communication and presentation skills. So I'll see you in Atlanta in March!

Bruce,
I don't know if you've seen the threads, but a few people who did not have to complete DMAC have expressed concerns that they will be unprepared for their presentation.
Would it be possible for the SOA to send out a copy of the DMAC project guidelines to the FAC attendees so that they have the same info and guidance (obviously with some specific instructions to make clear that they don't have to do the paper)?

Have you seen this (http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?p=2649837#post2649837) discussion thread? I assume Yanz already has all she is going to receive fron the SOA on the topic, but I could be wrong.
I'm in the group of ppl who didin't do the DMAC but must go to the new FAC with the presentation. There's a whole page of instructions and sample topics in the FAC packet, but I don't find it all that helpful. My problem is that if I choose a topic that has to do with stuff I've worked on, I'd never be allowed to present that to an external audience due to it being internal/competitive info. If, OTOH, I pick something I haven't worked on, that means I now have to put in significant amounts of time to figure it out and make the presentation.
Others in my position: how are you approaching this?
ZipCode Princess
02-08-2008, 04:45 PM
I'm guessing the page Yanz refers to is the one in the FAC invitation. More information is supposed be sent out after the FAC invite.

I didn't actually see the presentations (because I was speaking to the Portland Actuaries Club). Someone who was there could do a better job answering your question. I agree, the presentations weren't bad at all. That was the big concern of everybody the first couple days ("what if I don't make it eight minutes and I fail?!"), but truthfully, the SOA cared faaaaar less about us making the minimum time requirement than they did about us showing our presentation skills. If you finished yours in, say, five minutes, I'm 99% sure they'd be totally cool with you taking some questions from the audience and even repeating part of the presentation. The important thing was showing off your mad skillz and being properly evaluated.
The best parts were the social parts of course. Lots of fun and lots of great people!
Some other things I learned at the FAC:
James Woods looks the same now as he did 30 years ago.
Bruce is an "actuarial badass."
Actuaries are surprisingly good at foosball.
Canadians are crazy.

Speaking of James Woods, he attended MIT but dropped out before graduating in 1969. I arrived in 1970 so we had no overlap. It's interesting that he was chosen to play an actuary because apparently he has quite a lot of mathematical aptitude.
Canadians are crazy. Isn't it great!

Also, giving a presentation to a small room of soon-to-be-FSA's on the most basic topic of pension consulting is really boring when 5 out of 8 people in the room are in pensions

As Houdini mentioned, the presentations were surprising good. The only bad part was that people included fodder that they could have eliminated. It was a clear case of people erring on the side of caution (me included) to make sure to fulfill the time requirement.
Everyone was on pins & needles (or so it seemed) for the first day plus until the presentations were done. However, after that - people seemed to think that it wasn't such a bad thing & was probably a good enhancement to the process.
I'll have to say, the guest speaker that the SOA brought in for presentation skills, was very good. (At least I thought so).
(It was pretty classic when Amit picked up Bruce during the presentation ceremony.)

It was pretty classic when Amit picked up Bruce during the presentation ceremony.Hmmm, "classic"? I would have said "impressive"! I'm not as light as I may look. I'm just under 150 pounds now, so anyone who can pick me up that easily is quite strong.

oh yeah--I also hear that Bruce got kisses during one of the February FACs, but I think our graduation ceremony was a little more reserved. Someone in July should kick up the affection a notch.

You sound like that we should start up a "FSA (not birthday) punch" tradition. :dsmile:

Proud to be in the Class of March 2008
Section 77 Atlanta FAC.....Thanks all for making it an unbeleivable experience.
Bruce and facilitators alike!
I don't think we were that boring in this session, especially with the crazy canadians and the classic and impressive moments.
Not to mention the late night partying the night of the banquet & for some and the Chicken and Waffles for others!
We thank the 4 am Waffle houses in Atlanta for housing us at such an important time of need!
Best class EVER!!!???? I'd say so! Gotta love the crazy Canadians and the Crazy and louder French Canadians
PS did the bartender hate us by the end or what?
Now what's all this talk about punch an FSA tradition? We're actuaries,, hug it out
Anyone have highlights of the Trip to this FAC and time spent there?

Not sure why the bartender would have any reason to hate us, as after the coupons ran out it became time to actually pay for the drinks, and tip pretty handsomely for them if I do say so myself. But yeah, if anyone has any pictures of me (most people there probably know who I am or can figure it out), PM me, as I forgot to bring my camera for the trip.

Hi-lights? hmm probably signing up for Actuarial Aoutpost to Say "I GOT MY FSA!!!!!"
Who knew a FAC could be this much fun. I didn't, did you?
Oh and I can't forget the standing ovation received for the most dedicated actuary I know..what was it? 37 years? Congrats again if you are reading
other than that? Watching the movie, seeing bruce get a giant bear hug on stage, and of course getting my Diploma.

OK, no offense to Bruce, but I'm not kissing him. Unless maybe someone slips something into my diet coke.
I should kiss my husband, since he is the one who took up the slack so I could finally finish this thing.
And I should kiss the person (I'll have to look up old posts to see who it was) who helped me figure out that I might be able to trade module credit for DP credit in the transition. That person saved me at least 9 months and countless hours of studying.

Module credit? You mean, completing PD stuff to get credit for exam DP?

No, all my credits were pre-2000. In the 2000 system, I needed 6, 8, and PD, but I never got any of that. In the current system, I thought I would need CSP, DP, and FSA modules. Instead, I was able to do CSP, FAP 6-8, DMAC, and FSA modules. So I replaced DP with FAP 6-8 and DMAC.

Well I was there myself... as one of the crazy French canadians as you call them! If anyone feels like sharing who they are, I'm pretty sure I met everyone at one point or another.

Houdini, I met several folks in the game room Tues. night...after some Southern Comfort shots were passed around. Were you hanging out with Stlactuary, Pilotfish, qwyjibochu, notyetfsa?

Yup, I was there, but I was usually hanging around the foosball and shuffleboard tables. I didn't make it over to the table near the bar until late. I was just in time to enjoy a couple recruiting shots that made me consider moving to Boston. :)
