Released in 1982 starring Ben Kingsley. Won several of the major oscars for that year.

Anyway, I had never seen it, and so I watched it this weekend. It's a very good movie if you haven't seen it.

So why am I telling you this? Because the thread on the debate between evolution and intelligent design made me think of this quote from the movie:

Gandhi, seeing his friend hesitate in a moment of great risk, asks Charlie Andrews, the Catholic priest, "Aren't you a man of God?"

Andrews answers, "Yes. But I'm not so egotistical as to think He plans His day around my dilemmas!"

That is all. Carry on.

Goonies also has some very good quotes that relate to this issue.

Chunk: Everything. OK! I'll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max's toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog... When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out... But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.

I remember being verey disappointed in 6th grade that ET did not win over Gandhi. My kids watched it with me last year and as a parent it was amazing to see how much it touched them.

Hmm, I'll have to put that on the Blockbuster queue, I don't think my kids have ever seen it.

I watched it recently too. I wondered how much "artistic license" was employed by the writer/director. Like, did all the violence really stop just because of Gandhi's hunger strike?

I'm sure not since it hasn't stopped to this day.

I also find it very disheartening that there is still so much repression and violence toward the "untouchables" that is ignored by the Indian government and the rest of the world.
