Thought's comment about TLOTR getting in his top three makes me think it might be time for another one of these:
My faves (that I can think of right now)
1. Casablanca
2. Harvey
3. Cool Hand Luke
4. Blade Runner
5. Sixth Sense
6. A Fish Called Wanda
7. Hannah and Her Sisters
8. Remains of the Day
9. Schindler's List
10. Withnail and I (Note: I absolutely do not recommend this movie, most people hate it)
Good movie nobody's ever seen: Flirting
I was going to limit it to three, but what the heck.

Although I differ from them, here is what The American Film Institute (http://afi.100movies.com/100films.asp?moviesession=1042565396Tue+Feb+23+16% 3A32%3A35+1999) has to say on the matter. My favorite is still 'The Godfather'. I would put Casablanca VERY high up there too.

The first time I saw Notorious, I was in a movie theatre watching a newly released print of it. Right when it ended, the whole audience started clapping! Definitely a classic!

M - I loved "Being There". "No Way Out" was good, but based somewhat loosely on "The Big Clock" with Ray Milland, which I enjoyed more.
(I'll grant you that "No Way Out" was a MUCH better title.)

I can't make a list so short.
What I'd probably have to do is take the AFI list, and make a list of substitutes.
My criteria are as follows:
1. If while remoting the movie comes on at any point, you'll stop to watch the rest, it should go on your list.
2. If two such movies are on, the one you don't choose is placed at the bottom of the list, possibly to be dropped.
This doesn't work all the time. "Tarzan The Ape Man" (Bo Derek version) was on last night. I chose it over The Simpsons. If only she could act.
Maybe next week.

As with others, off the top of my head and in no order:
Citizen Kane
It's a Wonderful Life
Taxi Driver
Pulp Fiction
The Godfather
Seven Samurai
Sunset Boulevard
Some Like it Hot
Jules et Jim
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Lee Mellon

Klozov - especially when he says "move, and I'll turn you head into a canoe." Great line, perfectly delivered.
Cannonball

A River Runs Through It ("I am haunted by waters.")
The Shawshank Redemption
Gladiator
The Field
Jonas Grumby
12-22-2001, 07:39 PM
1. The Third Man
2. 28/35/42-Up
3. Laura
4. Citizen Kane
5. The Gambler
6. The Nasty Girl
7. Being There
Maine-iac, glad to see The Third Man and Laura on your list. I collect pulp fiction paperbacks and happened to find Laura (by Vera Caspary) a couple of years ago, complete with slinky damsel on the cover. Not much of a collectible, but a happy find because of how much we like the movie.
I also have Kenneth Fearing's The Big Clock, which is where the Ray Milland movie came from...but I didn't even know there was a movie other than the Costner vehicle.

Jonas - Neat! I have a copy of Vera Caspary's Laura as well [no dust jacket  ]
Caspary's Waldo is quite a bit different from Clifton Webb's, but they are both pretty chilling.
I didn't realize there was a novel from which The Big Clock was taken. I'll have to look for it!

As of my mood right now (undoubtedly influenced by the season)but definitely ones I watch over and over and over - in no order:
It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
The Santa Clause
The American President
Gone With the Wind
Star Wars (first trilogy)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Schindler's List
The Princess Bride
The Wizard of Oz
Harvey
Couldn't keep it to 10 - like DTNF, it would be easier just to make a few substitutions to the AFI lists.)

I just noticed that "Flirting" is on cable this afternoon on WE. It's a pretty tame movie, so I can't imagine they'd cut much out. If anyone is enough of a geek to check this page from home, you can still catch it.
