master of actuarial science, which one is better? Which one can provide a better job oppotunity, especially for international students with a visa? I think UIUC is more famous generally, but one of my friend in ivy league tell me iowa is absolutely NO.1 in actuarial science program in USA. Anyone have any opinion?

well, maybe no relation between them. His opinion is important to me because he passed 7 CAS exams when he is 22 years old....

I went to UIUC and saw a lot of international students do well in the job markets. I work with a few from Iowa. Both seem like decent choices. As for Iowa being the #1 program, I don't think that's true. I thought I heard Michigan was best? I could be way wrong.

Also, if your friend went to an ivy league school, why don't they promote that school versus Iowa?

Thank you, indeed nobody can tell which school is best in AS. What my friend said is only his own opinion. His school doesnot have an AS master program.... he is learning statistics....

You have worked in AS career? Do you know the reputation of AS program of these two university in HR's brain?

No offense, everyone, I just want to know the differences of job oppotunity in these two schools. And I do know many schools are excellent in AS program, so it is hard to say which one is "best".

No doubt :):):)

But with respect to grad studies in ActSci, that may not hold water

1) Have you talked to professors at each school and asked them this question?

2) Do you know if you will get in to one, or both of these schools?

Thanks for your answer.
1, this is the good way that I will try, though the teacher in UIUC relied my email very slowly...often after weeks...maybe I referred to a wrong email address, Marci, right?
2, yes, I do. I have received admissions from both universities. An admission with financial aid will give me an eazy choice, unfortunately I have to pay myself...
Thanks again for your useful answer:guitar:

Thank you all the same, at least you let me know Iowa is not obviously the "best" one:toast:.

Iowa is consistently ranked in the top 3 for act sci programs (I believe I've heard Georgia tech and connecticut or something, but I could be off). The course 3 (now MFE/MLC) pass rate is extremely high there.

I don't think there's a clear cut answer to which one is "better". Personally, having visited both schools, I can tell you I hated the UIUC campus. And tailgating, and school cheer in general, seemed sorely lacking. Iowa is known for it's pre-football game parties (the fact that they lose as often as they win doesn't seem to have much of an impact on that ).

the UIUC campus is awesome. If you love football, though, this is not the campus for you (we are mediocre in this department). The night life is very good. It is a good party school

Dude, the Illini were in a BCS bowl last year. Ok so they maybe were the weakest BCS team ever, but still that is quite an accomplishment. Sort of like dating the ugliest Dallas Cowboy cheerleader You still got to be damn proud of yourself.

being a good football school also includes tailgating and the rowdiness of the fans

the point is JOB OPPORTUNITY

Then either is a really good choice. I would go for what is cheaper. I bet you will get a job either way.

I don't know much about UIUC for actuarial science,
but I know you absolutely cannot go wrong with Iowa.

Look at their website, many international students get loads of offers and a summer internship after first year. I just think that if you go into Iowa, don't try to go in passing all the prelims. Their program is to train you to pass P, FM, MFC, MFE, and C

I would say you can pass P and FM before you go into the program, but if you pass more, than in admissions, they can say that their curriculum would do you know good and then not admit you. But talk to other friends in the program to find out how many exams they passed before entering.

I am in biostatistics PhD program at another school, but I remember getting
an outright rejection from their biostatistics program, and then four years later I see the head of the program at a conference in Houston!!
