Every year, for the past several years now, my family and I go to see "It's a Wonderful Life" which always plays at a local theater the weekend before Christmas. This year was no exception, but what made it a little odd was that, while waiting in the lobby for the theater door to open, we saw former Clinton cabinet member Robert Reich.
http://www.prospect.org/tap_images/columns/images/reich-r.jpg
In the theater, my mother sat directly in front of him. I was a bit embarrassed, but there was a sizeable crowd, and somebody would probably end up in front of the poor guy.
Just thought I'd share. Happy Holidays!

Ignoring The Drunken Actuary's eggnog-fueled ramblings to pick up the thread on brushes with non-giant Democrats...
A couple of years ago I was in Harvard Square waiting to cross the street when a man stepped up beside me. I glanced down at him and it was Dukakis, who gave me a friendly smile. Then we both jaywalked.

No Jonas, DA is right. No one cares about our little anecdotes. We should be posting witty, insightful, and original ideas -- like questioning the existence of God. No one's ever done that before.

Um, I see "famous" people all the time...the perks of living in LA.
Best sighting: Kevin Smith at the mall with his wife and daughter. That was cool. We had this "I know who you are, but I'm not going to bug you, even tho I'm a huge fan"-"Thanks" type moment.
Latest sighting: David Faustino, "Bud Bundy" at a bar a few weeks ago.

Elisha - fie on you! There's celeb galore right where you are. Huey Lewis used to get sandwiches right down the road from work, and Pernell Roberts and I looked for veggies together more than once. I saw the Bobcat in Mill Valley and Bruce Willis at New Georges.

Besides, I never could keep down smoke of any sort. Due to momentary lapses in judgement, I tried twice with cigs and once with Mary. All three times I coughed for the next hour. On the occasion mentioned above, I decided I didn't want to do that in front of Nik Turner and Del Dettmar.

I have a couple...
1. Sat next to Dustin Hoffman on a bus in NY
2. Sat a table over from Chris Farley in a restaurant in Rock. Ctr.
3. Sold Davey Jones (The Monkees) a box of Entemann's Cheese Danish
4. Sold Teri Garr a NY Times
5. Sold Nixon's secret service agent a cup of coffee (Nixon was in the limo and waved to us on the way out)
6. Jeff Torborg was a regular in my store for about a year
I worked in retail when I was in college (at the Jersey Shore) and had some other obscure sightings (Tommy Conwell, Robert Hazzard, the kid who played Patrick Harrington's son on 'One Day at a Time', etc).

My brushes with glory.....
(1) I once drove Bobby Riggs to LaGuardia Airport after being flagged down by his bodyguards after his limo broke down.
(2) Waited on The Cult during my college table waiting days.
(3) Drank in the same bar as both John McEnroe and Steve from Blues Clues (different times).
(4) Saw Roberto Benigni SCREAMING into his cellphone in front of Cats on Broadway. He was speaking in Italian, so I had no idea what he was saying. My guess: "You sent me to see this horrible piece of sh*t???".
(5) Passed Conan O'Brien in the West Village. About three weeks later, I was driving on the Upper West Side, when a pedestrian walking a dog stepped out in front of me. I jammed on my brakes and nearly hit his dog. The pedestrian? Conan once again.
Those are my favorite stories. A number of other sightings, plus I've known the Goo Goo Dolls for years. In fact, they played their first gig in the basement of my house. But they were the Sex Maggots then.

I'd had several celebrity encounters:
- Was on a flight with William Shatner once (he was in coach just like me... there was no first class)
- Saw Jimmy Walker in a Vegas casino
- Passed Jimmy Fallon on the street in NYC
- Met John McEnroe as a child when he was doing a local publicity stint in my town
- Marched in a parade behind Brooke Shields when I was in high school, she was in college at the time. Got to meet her and get an autograph.

1) Ran into Nick Nolte at a Neil Young concert.
2) Sat at the table next to Barbara Eden in Fridays.
3) Snuck backstage at a Night Ranger concert and hung out with 3 members of the band (the other two were doing an interview).
4) Sold ice cream to Jon Secada.
My brother had drinks in a bar with Drew Barrymore and Tom Green shortly after their wedding, and met Chris Farley and Norm McDonald at a friend's party.
Maine-iac, I was thinking the same thing, but I guess when you talk to a blue dog for a living you need to drink.

I used to be Malibu Jim on the old forum but I moved down the coast so I had to change my name. Here is a list of face to face encounters with celebrities in my 4.5 years in Malibu, if you want to know details please ask. There are absolutely no celebrities here in Solana Beach but during horse racing season I see a few accross the street at old Del Mar.
Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Jim Carey, Cher, Whoopi Goldberg, Ray Liotta, Greg Lougannis, Richard Dreyfus, Dr. Dre, Pam Anderson, Ed Harris, Jane Seymour, Sam Elliot, Barbara Streisand, Jim Brolin, Merv Griffin, and Rhea Perlman. All within the Malibu city limits.
Dick Van Patten is always at Del Mar with Sid and Jenny Craig. O.J. Simpson was at Del Mar several years before the murders, everyone was chanting Juice and he stood up and waved down from the turf club.

I was getting drunk in the middle of the afternoon on St Patrick's Day in San Francisco with an Irish Catholic buddy of mine. Jane Fonda walks in with Tom Hayden on a get out the vote adventure. She begins to kiss a couple people and heads right for me. When she was within two feet, I grabbed my buddy's arm and pulled him in front of me ... perfect timing for a lip smack and a good laugh.

Whoever said they saw Benini, I'm going to beg to differ. A very conspicuous Benigni impersonator, believe it or not, haunted the Manhattan nightlife scene for about a year about a year or two ago. This guy is a *dead* ringer. I saw him on page six and on the howard stern show.
I ran into Leo last summer outside a 34th and 6th jewelery shop.
I saw Richard Belzer 3 times on sidewalk cafes on the upper west side over the past couple years
I saw Howard Stern w/ piece of ass girlfriend last sunday
I've seen like 5 different road rules/real world celebrities.
I was with my sister when she tried to put a lei around Bill Bradley at his concession speech. She got past the SS, but Mrs. Bradley stopped her.
An alcholic Olympia Dukakis on the same day yelling at traffic, referring to herself as a '****'.
Married father of 3 Stone Phillips shagging an acquaintance in a limo after nbc christmas party
I asked Ann Meara (sp?)at a bodega if the guy who I just passed was really Costanza's dad. She answered sourly in the affirmative, only later when they amazingly sat in front of me in the broadway theater that night did I realize that they were married.
Lauren Bacall sat behind me at Saving Private Ryan. As I left, she shook her head and whispered 'spielberg' in awe.
Lee Mellon
12-28-2001, 04:01 PM
Bacall, wow, I'm jealous.
I once blocked Wilt Chamberlain, fall 1968, at the Forum in Inglewood. Chick Hearn missed it, but Elgin and Gale saw it.
Mr. Penguin

Paddyboy,
I'm going to stick with my assertion that it was Benigni. Name a celebrity and there are lookalikes, very good ones at that. The Benigni that I saw obviously spoke Italian as his native tongue, not sure about your impersonator.
As far as Real World/Road Rules people. I've met a couple, partied with one. With the exception of a couple who've gone on to better things (Judd Winnick comes to mind), these people are NOT celebrities. The word loser comes to mind.

Went to the same high school and played football with Darrell Russell (Raiders) and Fred Jones (Bills). I just kicked, but I did have the wonderful experience of being tackled by both of those guys the few times that I did join in for drills. And they were both on my kick coverage team.
In addition, Jelani McCoy of the Lakers was also in my class in High School, but I did not play basketball.

This might out me, but...
1. Two friends and I talked to Stephen King for about half an hour. This was late 70' before he became famous/reclusive; he was in a panel forum at a sci-fi convention and afterwards came to the front of the stage to talk and hang out. We were the only people who waited around.
2. Sold doughnuts to Leeza Gibbons.
3. Waited on Mark Aguirre, Dale Ellis, Derek Harper.
4. Back to the 70's...Lee Roy Jordan flirted with my mom while we waited in line at KFC. Anybody remember Lee Roy Jordan?
5. Morgan Fairchild's mom taught at my high school. Morgan (a.k.a. Patsy McIlhenny) came by to visit my favorite teacher, who got her to write me a short note.

Saw Ric Ocasek outside a McDonalds(the man is skeletal).
Not sure, but I may have been playing blackjack with Mark Wahlberg(Marky Mark, not the other one) in Vegas recently. Looked a lot like him, but I didn't want to ask and no one else at the table spoke English so I couldn't get confirmation when the guy left.

Mr. Penguin: The Benigni imposter is an Italian guy. This guy didn't just look like him, he seemed to have devoted his life to tricking people into thinking he was that person (Women, restaurateurs, the press, etc.). The fact that he was making a public spectacle of himself, the fact that he was in New York, the fact that he is the *only* celebrity impersonator I have ever read about *or* seen on TV (both are true in his case) who isn't trying to perform for an hourly rate makes me think that you were had. Also the dickless Judd of SF real world is bar none the most annoying, empty-headed real worlder in the history of the show. He deserves that dog Pam he married.

Stephen King lives in my hometown and I've spotted him once in awhile. He's not particularly reclusive, and has done a lot for the town, but he does keep a lower profile than he used to after being stalked, and later hit by a car.
My mom once double dated with Robin Roberts and his catcher when he played minor league ball with the Montpelier Capitals.
Several of my more recent encounters:
Bryant Gumbel & Montel Williams both live in my apartment building. I've run into them a couple of times.
Tony Randall's kids (yes, kids!) go to the same school as my older son. I met him briefly at a fund raiser for the school.

I certainly didn't marry rich! My wife grew up in a row house in Brooklyn as the daughter of a taxi driver.
As frequent readers of this forum might know, this is a second (possibly third, depending how you count) career for me. I spent over a decade trading commodity derivatives. Living prudently during those years plus having a working spouse has enabled us to maintain a comfortable style of living.
Also, my building is very large (almost 400 apartments) with a wide variety of apartments. For example, Gumbel lives 15 floors above me (each floor up is more expensive because of view considerations) and combined 3 apartments together to have approximately double the square footage we have.

Grim,
The last time Canada won Olympic Hockey Gold was 1952, when the Edmonton Mercuries won in Oslo.
A lot of canadians will scoff at this and say that if NHL players were eligible, Canada would have been unbeatable at the Olympics. I am not convinced. The Soviets showed in the 1972 series that even a team of the best NHL players could be beaten.

One of my other friends walked past Matt Millan and made a quick move like he was going to tackle him and Millan came at him scared my friend was going for his knees. He had a good laugh with us. Lots of others there.

my wife hates baseball.
When I got free tickets to a Cards game, she liked Ozzie's antics, but by the third inning, wanted to go home. Thankfully, she got talking to somebody else, let me stay the whole game. To her, the highlight was getting to pet a (Budweiser) Clydesdale after the game.
As we were leaving, she stopped in the building across the street (where our agents were having a convention) to use the ladies' room. We were driving away when she mentioned that there was a long line waiting for some guy named "Stan" to sign baseballs they were giving away.
I said, "Stan Musial?"
She said, "That sounds right."
I: "You never heard of Stan Musial?" She: "No."
She got it when I compared him to Mickey Mantle.

Growing up, I was very friendly with Michael Keaton's niece, who used to live across the street from me. She even told me she liked me and I think there was a kiss involved, but who remembers - it was like twenty years ago and I still preferred remote controlled cars and ATARI 2600 way more than girls. This is before MK became real famous though; I think it was right around the time of Mr. Mom.

Met Elmo in Langhorn, PAIs thet near Hershey? I think I met Elmo there too. Not sure of the town, but it was in PA.
Not too far, I have done both on the same vacation (http://www.sesameplace.com/sesame/pa/index.html)
I was wondering if the reference was too subtle

This exciting attraction, based on the popular segment Elmo's World as seen on Sesame Street, will be entertaining hundreds of thousands of families all summer long.
In Elmo's World Live! , Elmo explores the concept of dance… what can and cannot dance and especially the many different types of dance.
At Elmo's World Live!, selected guests in the audience will be able to join Elmo on stage
Can I be a selected guest??? Can I please??

Yes, Maine-iac. It's me. I'm good, hope all is with you too. And I don't remember meeting in Chicago. Not that we didn't. I remember Vegas at the Profssionalism course where we were sitting neaar the back and you struck up a conversation with Amy Bouska.
I have also met Redhead (at seminar in Chicago) and consider Elmo, while we've never met a very good friend.
Anyone else? Not that I can think of off the top of my head. I did shake hands with Michael Jordan in 1986, but I don't consider that as "meeting".

He likes me! He really likes me!
Saw the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" over the weekend (good movie if you like that type of film). Fits in this thread because my kids went to high school with Pavel Szweda who plays the young Polish laborer/love interest.
Kind of cool to see someone you know on the big screen.
PS: If he reads this, I hope I have spelled his name correctly. We know him as Paul, but his name and his character's name is Pavel. His last name sounds like Shi-da with a long i.

Met Elmo. That was one of the highlights of my life.
Pawel SzajdaThanks Patience.
I tried a google search on the spelling I thought was close and got one of those "Did you mean Pavel Szweda " links. Most of the links that came up were in Polish, so it seemed a safe bet that was a good spelling. I bothers me that I cannot find the name at the official Tuscan Sun web site.
Paul was drum major for the marching band. If you saw the movie the scene with the flags appears to have been designed for skills he developed at school.

I sat in front of Bill Paxton in a movie theater once. He was filming "Twister" in the town where my parents live and my husband and I were there visiting. I had no idea who he was but my husband recognized him.
He was with some other guys and telling them about getting to go to the White House and meeting the President because of a new movie he was in, Apollo 13.

I was in London and walked past Mick Jagger and friends one night. In our hotel we passed Matt Dillon in the lobby who was staying at the same hotel.
I think I overheard them say, isn't that the famous actuary from the rebel outpost.

In New York, especially around Rockerfeller Center and David Letterman's Sullivan Theater, one could easily see the rich and the famous like Sarah Jessica Parker and Mathew Broderick, Michael Douglas and Katherine Zeta Jones, Meg Ryan, Lisa Marie Prestley and Nicholas Cage, James Carville and the weatherman Mr. G near the Lincoln Center (I always see him near the Lincoln Center, I think he lives around there--or maybe because *I*'m always around there).

was one of my favorites. However, when I met him I found him to be very cold and stand-offish
also my brother-in-laws brother is a voice teacher. actually quite reknowned, trains many well known opera singers, Audra McDonald (3 Tony's, Annie & Mr Sterling on TV), and was asked if he could help Julie Andrews. He has been interviewed on 60 minutes. So he actually should be counted as a famous person and definitely the one I know best.
Also my moher-in-law was best friends with Mickey Hart's mother and beverly Sill's brother was my mother's gynocologist. Also Meredith Eaton (the little person on Family Law) and Edward Burns went to my high school (my sister-in-law knew both)

Alright, I used to work in the media, that in addition to living in New York and working in the marketing department, I got free tickets to all the shows, plays, concerts, Super Bowl, US Open (got Pete Sampra's outflier ball), the World Series you name it, worked with all the actors, the anchors, the politicians, the movie stars. And should I add all the Yale alums that I've met, Paul Newman, Jodie Foster, Sam Waterston, and yes Hillary, Bill, and Bush. Just didn't want to list all the names.. what's the point of all this? It's not like we are famous anyways. (Then again, you don't really know who I am do you. :D )
I'm really not competing with ya Patience, really. I don't know how this was started. I think my competitive edge is coming out... :shake:

No, he didn't pose that way. They took his official formal photo and doctored it. Yes, they asked permission first.

Paul Giamatti lives in my neighborhood. I see him around fairly frequently. Just saw him this evening at a local Thai restaurant with his son.
Last year, George Clooney and Brad Pitt were in my neighborhood filming a movie, "Burn After Reading". I never saw them. My wife might have, I don't remember. I know she and all her little mommy friends used to wait outside the shoot every day hoping to catch a glimpse. I think my son's former kindergarten teacher (attractive young woman) managed to strike up a conversation with one of them.

saw Ruben Studdard 3 years ago in Cancun - he was staying at the same hotel, waddling around on the beach with his posse. The group eventually sat down at the outdoor cafe for lunch, and the lightweight metal lounge chair he sat in gave way and one of the legs broke off & down he went - his giant body guard and a couple of the workers rushed over to help him up and get him another chair (probably had to be made of titanium to support him)...
