View Full Version : Exam DP-ILA - October 2008 (!)

Yes, that's right - the exam is scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2008. This is the first time I've taken an exam before Halloween before. Such an odd feeling.

Ok, so, here I go, starting another one of these things again. I've updated the study schedule for the 2008 syllabus (which I got from the SOA website just a little while ago). Attached you'll find the 2008 Study Schedule. I've also added a tab called [Changes] - a brief description of what got taken off and what got added to the syllabus. Not too much difference - 1 new SN, 4 new Published References, while 3 Published References got taken off. In particular, the S&U ART Published Reference was removed (thank goodness!).

So, if you find any errors or updates to make, let me know. ('cause I'll be using this to study - I'm assuming it's right, and I'd hate to miss out on something).

Also, don't mind the right-most columns - those are there to help me keep track of what I've done so far. "x" means I've done it, and a red "x" in the outline column means I've written out my own notes for the reading, while the black "x" means I'm relying on a separate manual (Infinite Actuary) to study from. I mentioned it before, but I likely won't study until after June 30th. We'll see how that goes.

Good luck to all, and hope this helps in your studying! Who's in?

You may want to search for last year's thread and find mjb's file - it's similar to the one I've posted, except it's tailored to the DP-ILA-C exam. Obviously, it won't be updated for 2008, but it'll have the majority of it, including the LIPF text stuff.

I will be updating the file, however, with CSP in a couple of days, I won't look at it until at least next week. If someone else wants to update it in the meantime, feel free. Here is the link to the post from last year:

Looks like they are trending earlier in the spring too, with CSP's scheduled for 5/1/2009.

As someone with a birthday in late October, it was always tough enough with an exam in early November. This makes it even better...... ;) Perhaps I'll celebrate my birthday the weekend after the exam this year.

I took mjb's 2007 spreadsheet and updated for 2008. Please let me know if I missed anything. Those I highlighted yellow don't appear on the syllabus this year (unless I missed it)

Thanks for updating this! I've attached a slightly revised version that includes some more of the page counts. Excluding the page counts for new study notes (except one I was able to find online), the page count is 2235 (last year it was 2262). Considering there are 7 new study notes that I don't have page counts for, it definitely looks like there will be more total pages this year.

I'm taking it.

What manuals / courses are there? I know of TIA, ACE. Are there others?

What about seminars? I know of TIA and ACE but I would like to attend one have one in the northeast.

You can take TIA online.

As far as manuals, I have ACE and ACTEX. Bit of a surprise to me - they're not so much study manuals as "list" lists. I'm not even sure what the difference between the manual and the flashcards (which I have yet to see) is.

What are the syllabus materials? I know that we have to buy the study notes from the SOA for $325. I also see that one some of the syllabus items, there is a live link. Are these linked documents also in the study notes, or do I have to go through each one individually and save them?

The online documents are not part of the study note package. You have to print them off yourself.

That sucks. I think that gathering all of the materials for DP is harder than the entire FAP course.

Back in again here too (5 last time on my first essay exam attempt so I am hopeful). And as before, a big THANKS WAT!!

I will begin ASAP after finishing the FSA modules...probably mid-July. Although the Regulation Module should be a good intro back into DP material too. Hopefully we won't be in again next time :)

In that case, you're going to hate studying for DP, because gathering the materials is the easiest part of the process.

So am I reading that right that the revised study note package only has one, 12 page study note? And it's $20?

That better be the most educational study note I've ever read.

I think that you are looking at the supplemental study note. It is only what was added for this sitting.

That's nothing. I once appealed a traffic court decision and I had to pay for a transcript of the proceedings to be sent to the appeals court. The price tag was close to $7 per page. And the writer didn't even have to come up with anything original.

How long was the transcript? How much was the court's decision against you?

That sounds like a real scam...

That sounds like a real scam...

They made me lay down $50, and I got a few cents back. So it must have been 7-8 pages.

Scam or not, I knew about it upfront and did it anyway. The whole appeal cost me an extra $60 above what I paid when I was "found guilty" of the traffic offense.

The court was what they call a "kangaroo court" and never rules against the officer (unless you pay for one of "their" local lawyers to represent you). There was no prosecutor (since they don't really need one) and when I pointed out that it is illegal for a judge to act as a prosecutor, she mumbled something about how she is just "listening to both sides" and not directing the proceedings. So the officer was the prosecutor? This is the wrong place to discuss this, but I'm sure something very unconstitutional went on there (continues to).

I even brought case law that showed that the equipment which the officer used to base his accusal on had been ruled faulty (even when properly maintained) based on expert testimony. Since it was from a different state, the court was not bound by the precedent, but if they were interested in doing it right they'd have to consider the evidence of those more knowledgable than themselves.

They've also published solutions (http://www.soa.org/files/pdf/edu-2007-11-exam-dpiu-ic-sol.pdf) for the fall 2007 exam. Although they have four separate links on the SOA's website, the morning and afternoon sessions for both US and Canda are all in the same file.

Hi mjb, I just did a quick comparison between your spreadsheet and the one I created. It seems that you missed an online study file "Stochastic Pricing, Session 62 TS from November 2005 SOA Annual Meeting". It's in Section 7 of the syllabus and is in PPT format.

You might realize it already, but just want to point it out in case you don't know.

Following the previous post, mjb, another small thing I noted is that the online study note "What's Backing Your Life Insurance Guarantee? [The Actuary, 02/2005]" is still on the 2008 syllabus. You left it out in page count.

The spreadsheet I downloaded does have the two study notes mention in the prior two posts. the page count for the "What's Backing Your Life Insurance Guarantee?" study note is 6 pages and the "Stochastic Pricing, Session 62 TS from November 2005 SOA Annual Meeting" just has session 65 instead of section 62.

The spreadsheets were updated, make sure to download the latest version.

Quick question about the "Marketing for Actuaries" text. The syllabus says "all chapters", chapters 1-8 are included in the spreadsheet posted in this thread, but the appendices are not. In my ACE study guide, there are notes for the appendices.

So are the appendices included in the required reading?

rekrap
07-28-2008, 01:34 PM
Are the appendices labeled as "chapters"? Skip it!

BigDawg

It turns out the appendices were included as part of the totals for Chapter 7. I read them, and the ACE guide said to memorize a lot of the lists from Appendix II, so I guess they are somewhat important.

I checked with the SOA, here is the response:

"Typically, unless we specifically say exclude appendices, they are covered."

Sorry folks! You've got to know Illustration Reg.
