What are some silly fads you remember from your middle/high school dayz?
-I remember this game where you would make a circle with your thumb and index finger, and if you had some unsuspecting person look at it, you got to punch them.
-There was also the fad when someone would breathe deeply, you'd get your chest pressed up against the wall, and then pass out.
-Slap wrist bracelets were in.

Wow, I was like 5 years old at the time.
We had the old doornob/safety game. (wait, I still do that)

We played "pass it down", which was another one of those 'punching someone' games. Someone at a table would just punch the arm of the person next to them and say "pass it down", and they would punch the next person, usually until it got to where the next person to be hit was the person for whom the whole game aspect of it broke down.

Slap bracelets quickly got banned in my school b/c some teacher heard that a kid cut his wrist with one in some other school in another state.

Playing that game where you get beat up, then pretend it didn't hurt and tell everyone that you let they other guy win the fight because you knew he had self-esteem issues and then you go home and fall asleep crying in your mother's arms. Could that be considered a fad, if it happened often enough?

OK, I'm WAY older than most of you, but the fad in my junior high days was flared bell-bottom pants. But most of us couldn't afford to (or Mom would not allow us to) get rid of perfectly good jeans or cords just because they weren't flares. So we cut them up the side, and made triangular inserts of colorful prints to create a flare and be really cool. :D

For some reason we saved the pegging for summer camp, instead of school.
And we usually used "pinkie balls".

The big things for us were "quarters" and "bloody knuckles". "Quarters" is spinning a quarter (or sometimes we played with a nickel as it was thicker) and each person had to successively continue the spin of the quarter without knocking it down. The person who did placed their knuckles on the table and had the quarter/nickel slid into them. You were out at bleeding.
"Bloody knuckles" is retarded and it was just you punch each other's knuckles until someone bleeds. The bleeder is the loser.
Also, paper football was kick ass.

Umbros were too short and loose-fitting, but everyone wore them for gym class. Umbros+boxer shorts = entirely too many views of the franks and beans for my liking.

We played bloody knuckles too, but our version was a little different. One player would balance a comb, laying on its side, on his knuckles, with his hand made into a fist. The other player would try to pick up the comb and rake it between his knuckles before he could pull away. Play alternated until the loser bled.

People who wore those were just begging to be shanked (pants pulled down, not stabbed, although they deserved the latter as well)

Plus - there was always that one kid that thought Umbros made good swimming trunks...

I was going to make this same post. Loved Wall Ball.
We also had a sweet paper football league going on at lunch.
We played multiple versions of bloody knuckles, many of which already mentioned. The official one was the one where you would just punch each other's fists until someone bled. It rarely got played until blood was drawn, usually someone would quit.
We also played the quarter version. And then finally the version similar to the hand slap game. You would hold your fists up to each other and who ever was hitting would try to hit the other person's knuckles with the bottom of their first (other knuckles). If you swung and missed the other person got his turn. If you flinched early they got a free hit.
Bloody Knuckles and Paper football was in junior high. Wall Ball was during high school waiting for the bus before baseball games. Pogs was awesome in elementary school.

Mighta been elementary and not middle school, but...
Making pencils stick in the ceiling tiles.
Also, in one school up in the north, I was one of only a few students who didn't have their hair parted in the middle. But when I moved to the south, my brother found he was the only one in the school who did have his hair parted in the middle.

mercy
It was a one-on-one game played where two people [dudes usually] would face each other and grip each other's hands with interlocking fingers so their palms were touching. Usually the grip was about shoulder-height. Then when it "started" each player would try to bend the other person's hands back so that through pain of finger or wrist bending the other person declared "mercy" and lost.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this. Magic: The Gathering? And here, take my non-nerd card.
Er, let's see, games wise during break, we had a lot of things we made up. One where we called it Coca-Cola, though it sounds nothing like it. We'd bunch X people up together, yell "Coca-Cola X-by-X" and take X jumps backward, and took turns trying to get at each other's feet with your own feet. You are to remain stationary unless defending.
Since uniforms were the norm where I grew up, not much fashion trend going on there. Maybe those converse Ox canvas shoes, and having combs with the long sharp handle in the back pocket. Maybe a metal chain attached to your wallet too.
Fun times.

There was a similar one in which you drew an "X" on a person's arm and count to three silently, and count four and five out loud. If, by the time you say five, the person hasn't "brushed it off", you get to punch him. The idea was to do it so he didn't notice. The "X", not the punch. He should definitely notice the punch.
