That big thing in the basement that blows hot or cold air.

Any ideas? There's not much water but enough to be a concern.

FWIW, if it is a big thing that "blows hot or cold air" there shouldn't be any water in it at all. In the winter, some fuel source heats the air and blows it around, and in the summer it just blows around cold air coming form your air conditioning unit...which probably has a coil that is condensing the humidity out of the moist air in your basement and dripping out...has it been humid lately? or maybe the drain which normally diverts this condensation is plugged?

Can you tell where it's leaking out of? There should be a two sets of pipes. One is your regular drain...the other is your emergency drain. If it's leaking out of your emergency drain, then you probably just have a clog in your pipes. You can fix this yourself if that's your thing or call an AC repairman and expect to pay about $150-$200.

If it's leaking from the regular drain, you may be able to putty it up...but I'm far from handy, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

How does the salt interact with the putty?

It is more likely the drain pipe is stuck with slime. Try pouring some bleach down it or take it apart and clean it out. Happened to mine several times. Of course mine is in the attic. Here is AZ there are no basements.

My AC does this when the dehumidifier is not working properly. Condensation builds up, then when the AC turns off I get water on the floor of my basement. You may want to check the dehumidifier, and if you don't have one consider buying it.
