Which calculator would you recommend for this course?

I'm sitting for it this Fall, but I would say that the TI 30X IIS is the best all around calculator if you had to choose one.

If you have a BA II Plus from Exam 2, you will find its statistics worksheet much more helpful than the TI 30X II as it allows frequencies > 99 for 1-Var stats which simplifies finding sx and σx as well as having linear regression built in.

Well, you know me. I carry in as many as I have (at least 3).

Instead, they provide SUM(XY), SUM(X2), etc. Thus, it is very important to memorize the formulas for regression. This was one drawback of ASM. Abe usually provided the data points, but he should have just given SUM(XY), SUM(X2), etc.

I used to carry 3 (Inset random I_h_e tool remark here), but I stopped taking the BA - 35. Once you're comfortable with the BA II Plus, there is no reason to use the BA35.

I always bring two TI 30X IIS and BA35. During Course 3 my TI 30X IIS broke, good thing I had both.

I'd make sure that the batteries are new or that the solar cell is functioning properly, too.

.... Just a thought.

I bring spare batteries for both the 30X II and the BA plus, and of course, the requisite screwdriver.

I know, in your day they used slide rules and abaci, walked uphill to and from the exam center in the snow and ice, using shards of broken glass and barbed wire as shoes for traction, and you only had 15 minutes to solve 273 questions.

I had the BA 35 solar thing which lasted about 1/2 a year, then got the TI 30 X II S. It started acting flaky (2nd key wouldn't work) about a week before the exam (again, calc was about 1/2 year old) so I bought 2 new ones for the exam.

Like the TI 30 X IIS, but I am not thrilled by their longevity.

My TI-1706 is still working after 15 years.

I'm still on my first TI 30XIIS. Then again, I bought it for the Spring 2002 Exam 1 sitting, so it's not that old.

Are you that old? Oh, wait, maybe you inherited it...

Absolutely. It was a special gift given to me. I'll cherish it always.

Avi, or Bama, can you tell me why TI 30X IIS is better than BA II Plus?? :-? And particularly for course 4?

I prefer the TI-30XII because you can see what you typed in, and modify it (as you can with a graphing calculator). With the BA-II, you have to start over, and can't as easily detect mis-keying.

Avi, or Bama, can you tell me why TI 30X IIS is better than BA II Plus?? :-? And particularly for course 4?Main reason, formulæ are input naturally. You calculate (4sin(2x²))³ by keying in that exact formula and hitting enter. No x²*2, hit sin, *4, and then cube your answer.

The 2-line display allows you to see your equation before processing.

And it's cheaper, and simpler to use than the BAII-Plus.

I got two of them and at first it takes some used to. What exactly do you mean by simpler to use? Also, are there functions particularly useful for c4 on it?

Avi

I feel it to be simpler based on the formulaic entry procedures, and less non-necessary functions for C4 (you don't need amortization on this exam).

The 2-Var stat function may save you some time on regression problems, but not necessarily as the SOA likes to give you the sums, as opposed to the data points.
