WASHINGTON (AP) — President George W. Bush has commuted the prison sentences of two former Border Patrol guards whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's act of clemency on Monday for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean was a victory for Democratic and Republican members of Congress and others who pleaded with the president to pardon the men or at least commute their sentences.

Ramos and Compean are each serving sentences of more than 10 years for shooting an unarmed illegal immigrant as he was fleeing an abandoned marijuana load in 2005, then trying to cover it up.

Why the heck was congress begging Bush to pardon these guys?

Because the guy they shot was a major drug dealer. The Border guards claim had a gun. The prosecutor granted the drug dealer immunity to return from Mexico to testify and then he was either arrested later or implicated later in additional drug trafficking.

I think there was a thread about these guys a while back. There is lots of controversy about what exactly went down and the actions of all involved.

Note though that it was a communation not a pardon. These guys will never be able to work in law enforcement again.

I didn't notice that.
Misleading thread title (but only because it is the title of the article).

This was kinda like what he did for Scooter. They (he) still stand convicted of the crime they were accused of but their punishment is less that what they should have received for the crime they were convicted of.

And sorry, it is commutation not communation.

They were convicted of shooting admitted drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete Davila in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande, away from an abandoned van load of marijuana. The border agents argued during their trials that they believed the smuggler was armed and that they shot him in self defense. The prosecutor in the case said there was no evidence linking the smuggler to the van of marijuana. The prosecutor also said the border agents didn't report the shooting and tampered with evidence by picking up several spent shell casings.

The agents were fired after their convictions on several charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and with serious bodily injury, violation of civil rights and obstruction of justice. All their convictions, except obstruction of justice, were upheld on appeal.

I think Bush "commuted" what appeared to be harsh sentences.
