Today I've got light grey pants w/ a dark red shirt. A no-no or a break from boring?

If I wear lighter pants like kahki, I wear a darker shirt. With navy pants I go with a lttle lighter color.

As long as you look good in what you're wearing, it doesn't matter

What color is your tie?

Agree with Big Jim Slade. Light shirt with dark pants, dark shirt with light pants. Just make sure they are not bright colors that contrast, eg. orange and purple...

It doesn't matter, as long as there is contrast. Shirt must be lighter or darker than pants.

For example, I have a black work shirt. I could never wear that with a dark colored suit.

Are you implying that sky blue does not look good with khaki?

I think it depends on the colors involved. No blanket statement can cover all situations.

Sorry, I mean bright colors as striking colors. Khaki, white, black, brown, grey etc. usually work well with everything.

Grey Pants and a red shirt sounds sort of Don Johnson-ish.

The white Jacket is key to any good Miami Vice outfit.

If you put a dark tie with the dark shirt, then you can claim to be a cell phone salesperson.

The only people I see regularly wearing dark shirts with ties are low-level salespeople, and it's probably because they can get those shirts and ties cheap at TJ Maxx.

Just wear black all the time, save yourself the trouble.
