Hi, I currently work for a consulting company as a pension actuary. I was wondering if any pension actuaries can tell me about different projects they work on in their office. I want to see what others do so that I know I am not behind. I currently do:
Valuations
Benefit calcs
Expense
Disclosures
Serp Shifts
Plan terminations
Asset Reconciliation

Anything else that pension actuaries can do?

Thanks

How about: Plan Design; Federal Forms; QDRO review; Investment Policy Review; Discrimination Testing; and (maybe last, but certainly not least) Explaining It All To The Client! (And, if Andy is lurking: Doing The Right Thing By The Participants!)

Are there any other special projects you do that are distinguished from normal pension work besides those?

Plan spin-offs and mergers

Plan terminations

Due dilegence review for plan sponsor buy/sell situations (acquisitions, divestitures)

Golden parachute calculations (SERPS plus stock options, bonus payouts, etc.)

Actuarial assumption studies

Provide justification for the FASB assumptions that the plan sponsor wants to use to pump up EPS

Another one I worked on: replacement ratios study.
