View Full Version : Do you think Ahmadinejad wants a war with the US?

Unless I missed some major coverage, everything I've seen has said the US is staying out of Iran's election. Apparently, Ahmadinejad thinks we're interfering though.

Obama said Tuesday that Iran's government must justify itself not in the eyes of the United States, but in the opinion of its own people.

"A sizable percentage of the Iranian people themselves ... consider this election illegitimate," he said at a White House news conference.

"It is not too late for the Iranian government to recognize that there is a peaceful path that will lead to stability and prosperity," he said. "We hope they take it."

Ahmadinejad said Thursday that even 5- and 6-year-olds would not allow insults to the Iranian nation, telling Obama: "We hope that you will avoid interfering in Iran's affairs and somehow express your regret so that the Iranian nation can become aware of your regret. If there is real change, the Iranian nation will welcome it."

Anyone else think that this is Iran poking the bear?

Some people think we should be playing into his game by issuing more harsh statements.

Actually it's the other way around. We would love to invade there, win freedom for their kids, protect their oil and find wmd's.

But since we're getting our asses kicked in 3rd world iraq - we have to wait til the govt is in shambles before setting foot there. Oh and Am. has no power. The guardian council does.

I think we should launch a few nuclear warheads "directed at North Korea" but accidentally diverted (for some inexplicable reason) to Tehran

Doesn't seem so inexplicable to me. The leadership of both sides of the current struggle are filled with people who are... not so amazingly well-disposed towards us. Signaling "Hey, my Persian home-boys! Let's stop hatin' on each other and get back to what we all love to do - hatin' on them there Great Satan Americans!" is a pretty obvious move.

No, this isn't about us. Its about Iranian public and focusing their hate away from the government and towards an external force.

As they always state, the most important thing for them is the survival of the Islamic ruling. In their book, this is more important than anything else. Once, this can be obtained by rigging the election. Another time, by killing political dissidents. When it comes to a real confrontation with the US, the survival of the Islamic ruling will be in bending over and accepting whatever the US wants to let them stay in power. They will do whatever it takes to keep the Islamic ruling.

The rhetoric against the US is good as far as it does not lead to actual war. Right after the US attacked Afghanistan, the Islamic Republic was so frightened that they didn't even chant 'Death to America' for a few weeks in the Friday's prayers.

UNLESS

Iran hurries up and pumps more oil to China and signs more oil contracts with China.

Then they are indestrucible. China, who owns us, would NEVER allow us to attack their oil sources. It'd be like The Gulf War except in reverse.

Hence why Washington wants to help destabilize and take out their govt before they become an oil superpower and thus off-limits for military action.

Would we allow Sweden to go attack Venezuela or Kuwait or Alberta, Canada?

Really?

We just passed some legislation on Iran a few days ago. How many other countries did that?

Yup.
They just hate us for no reason. Just because.
We have never done anything to Iran - like overthrowing a gummint in 1953 - right?

I wasn't of voting age in 1953. I can't accept responsibility for that action.
