I dunno if I can pick here, these are two of my favorite movies of all time. It's like choosing a favorite child. Not that I have children. It's just what I would imagine picking a child would be like if I had children.

??? Picking a favorite child is easy, it's the one you love the most. And people with children, don't give me the "I love all my children the same." That's a crock. There is one that you like and love more than the others.

Which one had more depth? (plot/characters/story/themes)

Hmm. Both involve a loved one getting "killed" by a man in black, who later turns out to be the protagonists loved one. Just in different ways.

Both involve huge hairy unintelligle beings.

It's a huge cult hit for the same reason Monty Python's Holy Grail is. It's not so much a movie as it is a collection of five minute sketches loosely tied together by a threadbare plot that doesn't matter except to set up each sketch. And every one of the sketches is brilliant.

I can watch each of these movies again and again. Loved 'em both. But in the end I had to go with ESB. The whole enemy-is-in-fact-father trumps the more light-hearted PB.

ESB has two divergent storylines with awkward transitions between them.

Abstract Actuary

Two great movies and, probably, the 'correct' final matchup. I'm actually going to vote for Princess Bride, even though I know it will probably lose. Honestly, if it was "Star Wars" (as a whole) against Princess Bride than Star Wars would win, no contest. But as a single movie (taken completely separate from its prequel and sequel) I don't think it is nearly as good as "Star Wars" is. I think many people aren't truly considering that when they vote.

I realize I should have flushed this out earlier, since it may make people rethink their vote. But, like I have done once before (not in the final four, that matchup was a joke) I am going to vote against Empire Strikes Back.

Final answer
"Star Wars">>>>Princess Bride>>Empire Strikes Back

with Raiders bumped, this was a hard choice. TESB is a great movie, but I made the mistake of reading the book before seeing the movie, which is likely why I voted for PB. If you've not read the book for PB, it is about as funny.

MAX.

When they first came out Raiders and Star Wars IV had the biggest wow factors of any movies I have ever seen. and for people who know me, I have seen a lot.

I love PB, my children love PB, we have all read the book and can quote the lines. and if nothing else is on we can always just sit and watch from where ever it is.

With Star Wars I don't do this, it is more epic and serial and I need to go from beginning to end. But for depth of plot, characters, originality I have to go Empire Strikes Back, though I would probably vote Raiders 1 and A New Hope 2, from things I have said in here before.

Honestly, I think the Clerks bit on Empire vs Jedi has influence much of the opinion, including mine. Yes, Empire has that great wow moment when Vader reveals who he really is, and that moment STILL gives me chills. But the rest of the movie is about the hyperdrive not working, Han and Leia playing cat & mouse with the empire, and Luke learning more about the force. There's not a whole lot of meat to the middle once you get past Hoth. It's all at the end in the cloud city. Not to say Jedi's much better, since it's a lot of prancing in the woods with Ewoks, but still I like the end of Jedi when Luke finally turns Vader back.

I voted PB because I'm part of the cult. This is my favorite movie of all time. I can almost recite the entire movie from memory. It has fantastic characters, wars, princes, torture, fencing, fighting, miracles,... true love. (sorry, went into Grandpa mode). PB also has probably one of the best collection of quotable movie lines, with only Naked Gun and Airplane to possibly beat it.

MAX.

I respectfully disagree. ESB is the best Star Wars movie. Hoth, Yoda, tonton, Wampa, Lando's betrayal, Luke finding out Vader is his father, Luke losing his hand, the ending. Gold, solid gold.

It's certainly not flesched. :) Flushed out could be meaningful, but he'd be stretching an analogy a bit (i.e. he's flushing this idea out of the bushes). I'm really not sure if AA meant fleshed or flushed, but the meaning doesn't seem to change too much either way.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is breaking every movie record there is right now (It grossed around 27 (?) million on its opening night). Does that make it the best movie ever? There is a difference between "blockbuster" and "great movie". I certainly don't judge quality of music by how much money an artist's album brings in, why should I do the same for movies?

Both movies are great. TESB wins because it is more awesomer. It is chock full of emotional moments punctuated with humor. All killer, no filler.

Also, TESB wins on music alone. I love TPB, but the music is terrible.
