Does anyone know of any (good) jobs in Dallas for valuation / financial reporting for an ASA level / associate actuary / actuarial manager?

<font size=2>I doubt it. After the gutting of JCPenney Direct Marketing, I'm sure the few life companies that were left in the area were pretty much saturated with applicants.

However, you could try Lewis & Ellis (small life consulting firm in Richardson that rarely has an opening), United American (life insurance in McKinney) and I think a few in the Fort Worth area. Otherwise, you would probably have to be willing to change over to pension (lots of consulting) or health (BCBS).

Of course, there's also Optimum Re in Dallas, but be prepared for a pay cut.

hah! jcp dms is not gutted yet. the few who left are no longer actuarial students. the rest are waiting until the end of this year.

L&E had a bad year & they are not hiring anyone - lucky to keep what they have.

UA is full. they did hire one lower level JCP person back in Sept.

Optimum is a sweat shop....i know 4 people who said they would never work there AGAIN....

Ft. Worth is too far.

hadn't given much thought to pension....but i might

If you're open to consulting, you might look at Milliman & Robertson's office--I think it's in Richardson or North Dallas. I don't know if Sammons Group or Life of the Southwest has anything; they may not. Swiss Re has an office in North Dallas right by 635 and Coit. The few others I know are over by Ft. Worth.

Perhaps working 45 hours for a 30/35-hour salary counts, though. Oh, and I may have been one of those four people.

Now, Towers-Perrin? THAT's a sweatshop.

There's also E&Y for health, life and pension. And it's not as bad as a previous thread on the old board made it sound. In fact, it's pretty good and getting better.

But the health practice is ruthless, mostly due to the unrelenting work ethic of the partner in charge. Of course, the partner has one of the most outlying salaries around, too. There's exactly one person that I know of who can handle working for this partner, and his wife is a CPA. Other than that, the department has had horrendous turnover. If you are in a position such that you are willing to put work above everything else in your life for a year or two, it can be something nice to put on your resume for later, though.

I was unaware that E&Y has a life consulting practice, least of all in Dallas.

What happened to Winterthur Life Re? They used to be near downtown Dallas, but I'm not sure what happened to them.

Isn't "good jobs in Dallas" an oxymoron? I mean, you'd have to be in Dallas.

Checkin' Answers!?!?! What are you still doing here? I thought you were teaching in a community college again--or was the lure of riskless profiteering from eBay too tempting? Mail me at andrew1729@hotmail.com and we'll catch up.

Yeah, I'm still teaching.

I can't pass up the occasional eBay flip, though. You're right - it's basically riskless. Buy stuff on closeout, then re-sell it on eBay or wherever. If it doesn't sell, return it to the store you bought it from.

My current item is the Sony Playstation game "Harvest Moon- Back To Nature".

Your Dallas Virgin Megastore price - $9.99.
Lowest half.com price - $26.99.

Passing that action up is like walking past $10 bills on the sidewalk. I bought 5 copies.

Ob On-Topic Content - One of my students was trying to recruit me to work for BCBS. Everyone wants that referral bonus. So, there ARE still jobs out there in Dallas.
I don't think Optimum Re is hiring, though.
Check out their Web site - no one is smiling.

Anyway, a number of those pictures are outdated. And hey... they managed to hire a student and actually get a picture online! I guess I just wasn't photogenic enough.

<font size=2>Oh, that's good. Because I'm *SO* sick of anonymity that I just want to come clean. NOT!

Anyway, I'm sure most of you would rather I keep your true identities to myself if I thought I knew who you were. So if you do get close, I'd appreciate it if you keep it to yourself. Most people here feel the same way.

(Feel free to forget that I've pretty much given you my resume. )

There is a company called Ascent Assurance in Fort Worth that had a recent need, but wanted an A.S.A. for the low-forties. What kind of idiots...
