Some of you may be wondering why I dug up some old threads - here's what I've been working on.

Here's a chart showing all of our players and which groups they played in by season. Capital letter denotes group winner. Players are ordered by when they first played (multiple players joining the same season are ordered by finish within that season).

Interesting notes:
- We've had 69 different players (that I know of - if you are playing under a different name and would like me to link your two histories together, let me know).
- We had 31 players in seasons IV and V, but only 15 in XIV.
- We have had a recent increase in new interest: 4 new players in XXV, 5 in XXVI, and 3 more in the past two seasons. That helped us get back to 28 players in XXVI.

cubedbee resigned our game. In typical Sicilian fashion I had a brewing kingside attack while he had a brewing queenside attack. I thought mine was mounting nicely until his pieces coordinated very well in order to win a pawn and put some pressure on my king. Feeling my chances slipping away, I sacrificed a knight in order to eliminate all of his kingside pawns and take back the initiative. The attack yielded very good results halting his attacking efforts, then getting back my material and then some in order to liquidate my attacking pieces. I was up a pawn after all of this and then cubedbee hung a knight. Finally a nice combo with my two rooks and bishop landed me another rook in material and cubedbee resigned.

Definitely a fun game. Good game cubedbee.

Minnesotah resigned to me (he was black). He set up a nice french defense and he overpowered a very bottlenecked center to go up a pawn early. I countered by positionning my remaining 2 knights and rooks to attack his queenside after he castled and managed to have my queen in the middle ready to move in. However, he forced a massive trade (including my queen) and I was back down a pawn with a bad pawn structure and my king blocked in the corner. We both harassed each other pawns with our remaining rook and I managed to gain the advantage after an uncatchable passed pawn threat that gained me 2 pawns. Great game Minnesotah!

Rekrap resigned to me (he was black). Started out pretty open with an opening I never saw before (he sacrified his knight for a pawn fork of a bishop and knight). Stayed pretty open till I made a blunder in the middle which left me with 2 pawn hanging. However, as he told me, he got caught up in his attack and didnt see the open B file which cost him his queen after 18 ...Qd1 19 Qxb7+

Good game Rekrap!

A wise man once told me that, in chess, "He who makes the penultimate mistake wins." I was glad you moved you queen out of the way, but I should have paid more attention to where you had moved it.

Good game, sir.

Good game JG. I sacrificed a pawn to get an attack going for myself. That attack never really happened and while I was still trying to light the fire I didn't take your attack seriously enough. Well done.

Gene Yuss resigned to me. I was black. The game was all about even and was looking to head into the endgame with me having a slightly better pawn structure when I pinned GY's knight to his king with my bishop. He defended it, but left it pinned, and I was able to rally around that attacking point to gain some material. Then I think he hung an exchange and after a little liquidation he resigned. Good game Gene Yuss.

procrastinator resigned our game. I was black. This was an interesting game. he doubled my f pawns and opened my g-file on a castled king, but I was actually ok with it, thinking I could get a decent attack using that file. We both ended up getting attacks going on that side, but his was slightly better. He went up a pawn, then we liquidated a lot of pieces, but after the liquidation I had the more active pieces (rook, bishop and knight). This helped me put his king in a tough spot and get my pawn back. Then that king position made an attacking knight move result in losing the knight and another pawn and he resigned shortly afterwards. Good game, procrastinator.

I believe we both have 2 moves played. Something like E4, E5, NG3, NC6

Quite an interesting game!

Ultimate Anyone?

My apologies to my fellow Group D'ers for being sporadic myself - I will do my best to get back on track today (though it'll still likely only be a move a day - not bold enough to do this at work yet).

Car'a'carn resigned our game. We built up a lot of pressure queenside, really from the get-go, and once we traded down I ended up ahead. Good Game Car'a'carn.

Good game 1695814. I was wondering if my subtle rook fork threat would be hidden by the brilliance of your neat little pawn pin. :)

Some interesting stuff earlier in the game after I sacrificed a rook and a pawn for a knight to develop a kingside attack, which you effectively foiled on move 19 with your counter knight attack. Well at least until you unfoiled it with your 23rd move, wish helped me to go on a bit of a rampage to get my lost material back. Interesting non-symmetrical endgame. (2 rooks and 2 pawns vs 1 rook, 1 knight and 4 pawns).

Cynical resigned in our game. Queen's Bishop opening. A little positioning and we were both well defended, IMO. I ran a pawn down the a-file for lack of any other ideas... a little trading ...until 17.Nc5? Cynical sacrificed a knight to kill my pawn structure. So I tried to keep the hole plugged and start trading down... we got into a very tight spot king-side with a pawn-vice, and once that spot opened up both our kings were vulnerable. Good game Cynical Realist.

I guess I didn't . . .

Here is the game. I wasn't happy with this one. Not sure why, but I was feeling somewhat confident all the way up to the end there. He sacrificed material in order to get an attack/advance some connected passed pawns and I think I felt that I successfully made the sacrifice a bad move. I wonder if I gave it away at some point near the end or if I was just always screwed and didn't know it.

All I remember from this game is wondering why you were not resigning at the end. I think you might have underestimated how strong the passed pawns were. If I get to it I will also post my analysis (when my life is less crazy).

I also won against Cubed Bee and Jonas. I will post the games soon.

:shake:

People assume that because I'm an actuary, I must be good at chess. That's when I'll remember games like this and laugh.

Separate from my fail opening, you did a clinical job of getting my queen into
a trap, Falco, so well played there.

It would have been a queen and a pawn for a bishop and a rook, not a total loss. But I had a clear advantage already that was only growing.

A question about how things will move around in the next round.

1695814 and I are tied for 2nd place in our group, and in our game against each other we ended in a draw. How is it decided who moves up and who stays?

Nobody22

My guess would be you both stay, based on the three-way tie in Actuarial Outpost Chess League Season XXVI (http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showpost.php?p=3422578&postcount=1) where we all stayed (myself included)

Can I get a status update on outstanding games? Though, we won't start the next season until sometime in January

A question about how things will move around in the next round.

1695814 and I are tied for 2nd place in our group, and in our game against each other we ended in a draw. How is it decided who moves up and who stays?

The general idea I try to stick with is the top two move up and the bottom two move down. Sometimes things happen that make it a little more art than science, such as players leaving, new players or returning players getting seeded, and collapsing or expanding the number of groups. In this situation I would try to give both players the same treatment. I think I remember once a situation like this having to keep both in the same group, but I would generally try to promote both. So, in the absence of other noise occuring, I would see if the 4th place finisher had a low enough score to deserve demotion. Another option occasionally is expanding a group from 5 to 6, but B is already 6 this season, and the feedback I've gotten is we'd prefer not to have 7 in a group if at all possible. I suppose something else I could do is give preference to whoever had black in the drawn game (which would be you). Ironically (or coincidentally), group C this season also has a tie for 2nd-to-last, where the players fought to a draw in their matchup against each other.

Good game, procastinator. You defended very well. I lost the plot after move 20 when most pieces were traded off and should have used the queen better after that.

My only remaining game, against GY, is close to a finish. Materialwise, I have two pawns + knight vs 4 pawns + rook. But I think I am about to queen a pawn unless I am overlooking something major. In either case, it should end soon.

RSF - there is something wrong in group A standings. The other unfinished game is CubedBee vs JG or GY?

Gene Yuss and I are at move 40. I have a bishop, knight and five pawns to his bishop, knight and four pawns. Nobody is particularly close to queening anything anytime soon. It could be a long haul still. I would be willing to keep playing this game during next season if that is ok.

CR (White) defeated Werewolf:

Not sure how the tables turned so quickly - Werewolf was advancing on the Q-side, when I launched a devious, but desperate counterattack for some counter play, and there turned out to be more behind the threat then initially it seemed, and it worked.

ramanujan did indeed queen his pawn, but it is down to this: I have a rook + 3 pawns (2 connected on the outside) vs his queen + 1 pawn. I don't know how it all will play out, but it looks like it's maybe not close to a finish.

By the way, ramanujan - your move 40 Rxe5 was excellent. I give it double exclamation points. I was thinking you might try it, but I admit that I didn't look carefully enough to see the queening threat (I might have missed that anyway). I guess I just figured that with a rook and with my king close by that I could prevent you from queening, but your king was positioned perfectly to prevent my rook from getting to the d-file and your knight and pawn prevented my king from getting over to d8.

RSF - there is something wrong in group A standings. The other unfinished game is CubedBee vs JG or GY?

The other game is Procrastinator vs me. He has been MIA since 12/22.

He's hanging on in case I keel over, in which case he could claim a 2-week forfeit. It's been fun laying waste to your kingside, thanks for a good game.

I'm up a pawn vs Werewolf but that game is progressing slowly and could be awhile.

Thanks. I has started thinking about Rxe5 as soon as you put your Bishop there. The b-pawn was the bait to displace your rook. But you have been excellent throughout the game and played better than me.

I agree that this is not as close to finish as I thought earlier - it can still produce all three results but I fancy my chances from here.

OddSox resighed out game. He outplayed me for about 30 moves, my only hope was to get a perpetual, since we both had only queen and a rook left, few mistakes though let me chase his king all the way to the first rank, which allowed me to grab his rook and soon after he resigned. Good game OddSox.

In my only remaining game, with Werewolf, I have a rook with 4 pawns vs. a knight, so it will be over soon.

I checkmated Werewolf. Queen's Gambit Accepted. We started off early trading down queen-side and I struggled to prevent him from castling (all I could do), sacrificing a pawn to that cause. His king escaped but his pawn structure wasn't set up, and I was able to break into an attack on his king which was successful. Good Game Werewolf.

Otherwise I will almost certainly miss the 'sign up' phaseWhat I do is "subscribe" to the Chess forum. Once a day, if a post has been made (including, of course, threads being created) I get an email alerting me to that.

From http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/forumdisplay.php?f=65 click on "Forum Tools" you should see a selection that says something along the lines of "Subscribe to this Forum".

Also, in the chess server itself, you can set that up to email you anytime your opponent makes a move. That's useful if you have an opponent that takes a long time between moves.

My game vs werewolf is plodding along slowly but it should be an easy win, each side has five equally aligned pawns and a rook, but I have an extra bishop.

My game with GY is also nearing end. I have Q + P v/s his R + 3P. My only remaining pawn is on 7th rank and should queen unless GY exchanges it with rook. In either case it should be a straightforward win for me.

Gene resigned against me. He outplayed me for most of the game and held the upper hand till I made the exchange sacrifice and queened the pawn. I will post the moves tonight.

Bates has only one game complete. I'm doing the groups this afternoon - should I leave him out of XXX so that he can get caught up?

My game with Bates was deleted due to inactivity from his part. What do we do now?

RSF, that one game wasn't finished either. Bates never really showed up this season (made only 1 or 2 moves in our game as well), therefore I'd recommend removing him from this next season.

Ultimate Anyone?

Ultimate and Abused Student decided to call it a draw (and thus neither of us won a game this season...).

I'm about three moves away from checkmating werewolf, in a game that was ten or twenty moves longer than it needed to be. He finally resigned, and I finish with 3.5 wins.
