General Description

Performs highly complex (senior-level) actuarial work. Work involves providing professional
actuarial advice and consultation, participating in the development of agency policies,
participating in the development and implementation of improved actuarial procedures, and
managing special research assignments. May assign and/or supervise the work of others.
Works under limited direction with considerable latitude for the use of independent
judgment.

Examples of Work Performed

Reviews pension plans and their actuarial valuations for actuarial soundness; makes
recommendations relating to actuarial assumptions, experience, funding, and other actuarial
matters; develops and monitors actuarial plans; oversees research assignments; conducts
actuarial examinations and prepares actuarial examination reports; reviews actuarial
opinions, reports and memorandums; reviews annual statement of actuarial items and
prepares annual report on the condition of Texas public pension plans; assesses the
impact of existing and proposed legislation or policies on agency programs with
regard to actuarial matters and provides input on rules and proposed legislation;
directs the agency’s preparation of actuarial impact statements on pension
legislation; attends legislative hearings providing expert testimony; develops
various actuarial and statistical exhibits for distribution to the agency, staff,
industry, and the public.

General Qualification Guidelines

Experience & Education

Experience in actuarial or statistical anaylsis work. Graduation from an accredited four-year
college or university with major course work in statistics, mathematics, actuarial
science, or a related field is generally preferred. Experience and education may
be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

Knowledge of actuarial formulas, methods, forecasting, and procedures.
Knowledge of public pension policy and Actuarial Standards of Practice as
promulgated by the Actuarial Standards Board.Skill in applying actuarial
principals and techniques and the use of actuarial computer applications.
Ability to interpret procedures and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or License

Must have at least five years of experience as an actuary working with one or more public
retirement systems and must be a fellow of the Society of Actuaries , a member of the
American Academy of Actuaries, or an enrolled actuary under the Employees Retirement
Income Security Act of 1974 (29 U.S.C. Section 1001 et seq. ).
