This song was written by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps and originally recorded by Gloria Jones. It was heard in the clubs by Soft Cell, who released it as their second single. The track rose, fell, then rose again on the charts, spending a then-record 43 weeks on the Hot 100. The Soft Cell version of the song was sampled on Rihanna’s S.O.S.

This is largely a product of the weakness of the decade in question (worst decade of music since Rock and Roll began) and the weakness of the bands.
