I am outraged at someone suggesting Bob is overrated. You clearly havent listened to his best work when he was in his prime. Even Love and Theft (2002) was an outstanding album. Get outta my face.

My son is a huge Dylan fan. I never really appreciated him, until hearing through my kids perspective.

I agree! To say that Dylan is overrated is to use extremely narrow criteria. The "edge" that you hear in Dylan's voice may go against the popular concept of good singing, but that same voice adds tremendous depth to his lyrics.

I thought this might not go over well. But I have given him a chance. I really like "The Times They are a-Changin'" and "Tangled Up in Blue" (you're all probably gagging now about how I like his "pop" stuff). I own Blood on the Tracks, and aside from "Tangled" the whole thing could go in the trash. Somehow it has become obligatory to fawn over him in recent years. There's no explaining taste, in music or anything else.

Nope. Those are great songs as well.

Same problem comes up everytime the word "overrated" is used, especially on this board: overrated by whom?

I'm sure there are people who overrate Mr. D. I'm sure there are some people who underrate him. The posters who disagree on whether he's overrated or underrated probably just know different people.

(Frankly, I could take him or leave him. Couple of hummable, hooky tunes, but, eh.)

Shelter From the Storm, Simple Twist of Fate, Buckets of Rain? These are garbage?

Pick up Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 and Time Out of Mind. These are 3 truly classic albums. If you don't enjoy those your aren't destined for the Bob fan club (which is OK since he's not for everyone).

Other fabulous albums: The Bootleg Series (all of them), Oh Mercy, Bringing It All Back Home and Love and Theft.

Amen. If he had a voice like Caruso (watch Don't Look Back and you'll appreciate this statement more) he wouldn't bbe nearly as interesting. His voice is one of his great strengths, believe it or not.

Most of his songs are about his hatred of his father. I know, some of the lyrics are hard to understand and the ones you can understand are hyperbole, but really, that's what they're about.

That does explain him trying to use the guitar strings to launch arrows at me.

Dylan: great songwriter, terrible performer. Not every great songwriter deserves to be on stage as well.

Quit listening to what the NYC music critics have forced down your throat for decades. Dylan, The Clash, and Springsteen are all over-rated.

It's all a matter of opinion I suppose. If you're looking for a performer who sounds just like their studio recordings, then avoid Bob. I've probably seen 6+ different arrangements of Tangled Up In Blue and each one was awesome (IMHO). I've been to 10 of his shows and have heard probably 70 different songs. I would bet that very few performers are able to do that (due to laziness, fear or a simple lack of material). Also, if you enjoy a killer rock band, he has had that for the past 6 or 7 years.

As for Springsteen: I'm not a huge Boss guy but, having seen him several times (including 2 months ago), there is no way you can say his shows are over-rated. 3.5+ hours of pure electricity (granted, I saw him in NJ which probably helps a bit). One of the great live shows I've seen.

Haven't seen him live, but the Springsteen fans I know were hooked my the concerts and became devoted fans

Most of the Dylan fans I know actually seem to care less about music reviews and popular opinion and are the ones who seem to truly understand music well.

I personally am not a big fan of either

Two more very good live shows (while I'm thinking about it):

Elvis Costello - saw him with the big wheel of songs in 86 or so. Did Allison twice in a row (since the wheel dictated it).

REM - Took my niece as a present. Would have been better had I known the songs. Awesome show.

Probably should have started a new topic (or looked for the existence of "Greatest Rock Shows...") but no time. Study, study, study!

Dylan's contributions as a songwriter cannot be overstated. I'm currently reading a book on post-1965 folk rock and everyone and their uncle covered him. But how many Dylan originals are better than the cover(s)?

As for Springsteen, I don't think he sucks but his truly great songs can fit onto a single CD.

Gimme Manfred Mann's versions Mighty Quinn and Blinded By The Light anyday. :)

Perhaps I'm biased but I think nearly every Dylan original is better than the cover. Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower' is close but I like the 'John Wesley Harding' version better. Actually, I like U2's version better than Hendrix's. Clapton's 'Don't Think Twice' is better than Bob's numerous different versions. Garth Brooks does a great version of 'Feel My Love' which is better. Manfred Mann's version of 'Quinn' is awful (IMHO). Other than those, I'll take the original's.

Asfor Bruce, at least give him the benefit of of a 2 CD set (I think Nebraska should be oneof the two).

Bob Dylan should continue writing songs for as long as he wants ...

but never step in front of a microphone to perform any of them.

Btw, anyone familiar with how Bobby Darin became Bob Darin for awhile there in the 70s to try and jump on the bandwagon?
