i'd be shocked if it wasn't an accident. i won't rule out a conspiracy completely, but i would be shocked nonetheless. until proven otherwise, i will assume it was an accident due to pilot error and poor meteorological conditions.

Actually, planes today have transponders in them to prevent midair crashes that will override the pilot's instructions - if two pilots tried to fly straight into each other, the planes would not do it. So it's at least theoretically possible to gain control of them and cause a plane to crash.

I had heard speculation that the reason the pilots attempted to land against advice of gorund control was that they thought the Russkies were up to something in diverting them, which seems to me just as possible as that the Russkies brought them down.

My best friend is a SW pilot and said none of their planes can do this. The jets and props he flew in the air force and air guard could and often would dump/waste fuel. He said they'd cover towns or people in villages in iraq just to do it.
