1) the FAC info i got indicates that if you are less than 10 minutes, you are marked as incomplete, but you will be cut off at 12 minutes. do you also fail if you go over 12 minutes?

2) who is the "audience" when you give your presentation? is it the audience of the DMAC paper you wrote (eg: head actuary, director of employee benefits, etc), or is it the people at the FAC, and you are describing your project to them?

3) does the SOA send directions about the powerpoint slides, or can you basically do whatever you want for the slides and just bring a copy on jumpdrive?

ETA: i just realized there is an FAC forum. can i move this thread?

1. I highly doubt you'd fail if you went over 12 minutes. It's more likely that the person timing the presenetation will just give you a hand wave at the 11:45 mark implying you should wrap it up.

2. The audience is the people sitting in front of you -- educate and entertain them.

3. Anything goes.

My FAC materials say that if you're less than 8 minutes, you're incomplete.

I don't think they would fail you if you hit the 12 minute mark - they'd probably just shut you down and put a check mark next to your name as 'complete'.

I view the presentation as them verifying you can stand in front of people and talk without peeing yourself, as well as giving you the opportunity to practice public speaking (since most of us aren't giving presentations daily).

What if you peed yourself, but delivered a brilliant, well articulated ten-minute presentation?

I believe there is precedent for such a situation. Toronto, 2008, IIRC. Success would depend a lot on the volume of urine, as you would be required to cleanup said piss in the remaining two minutes.

While there's no rule *against* peeing yourself, I imagine it would be a showstopper. If you can meet the requirements after something like that, then you really earned your FSA!

Did someone really wet themselves in Toronto? I hope they managed to make it through.

No. Well maybe -- I wasn't there -- I doubt it though. Just some light-hearted banter.

My presentation audience was the same as the audience of my paper rather than my fellow soon-to-be-Fellows. IIRC, most presented to the actual people in the room, i.e. "I wrote my paper about...".

I just thought it was easier to make slides and practice the presentation material by making a persuasive presentation ("We should go for this project because...") rather than an informative presentation ("In my report I recommended that we go for this project because...").

I received good feedback for it, so it wasn't a problem.

Thank you Dunnigan,
I was thinking in doing a persuasive presentation as well. I sent my outline based on that thought, but I was not sure if it was the way to go. Hearing it went OK for you takes some of the pressure away.
