What's really funny is that I give her the pre-dealer lecture. Basically every tip everyone mentions.

Hey maybe it works better that way. Shows the salesperson we are interested.

Then I have to dig in my heels to get the price.

Then you go home and e-mail an offer for that car to the dealer in the next town.

God, I hate car shopping. It's just an annoying game. It's easier now that I can do it as half of a good-cop/bad-cop duo with Mr. M. He does all the testosterone driven banter with the salesman. I keep my mouth shut and crunch the numbers as the offers go back and forth and give the high sign when we get to something that fits the parameters we agreed on before we set out on the odyssey. Some salesmen figure out that I'm the finance queen, some don't.

When I was single, no matter how much I knew what I wanted and what a fair price was before I ever hit the lot, I'd still get the "girlie, don't you want to talk this over with your dad/boyfriend?" line from the older salesman, and the "trust me, I know cars and you don't" fast talk from the younger ones. I really used to love the "WHAT do I have to do to get you to buy this car today?" line. Uh, how about agreeing to the offer I made you? That'll do it. Otherwise, if you counter, I'm gonna take your offer in writing, talk to a few more dealers, think it over a day or two, and then decide. They always seemed shocked when I would leave without a car.

Car shopping. Blecccch.

Car shopping. Blecccch. That's why I go to Walser (http://www.walser.com). They just give you the best price up front. None of that haggling bs.

People wonder why I keep my cars for 10 years at a time: fewer interactions with car salesmen and dealerships. I see eagles here wanting a new car every three years. From 20 years old to 80 years old, that's 20 interactions. I'm going to get away with 6.
The trick is to pick a good one that you'll like, and don't total it.

Did you have to qualify your statement with 'for cars'? :).
