No fun for Goliath to fall in the first round. You want the later rounds to be as competitive as possible.

So why is Federer seeded 1 and Nadal seeded 2 when Nadal is ranked 1 and Federer is ranked 2? Did they make the draw for Wimbledon before the French was over or something?

So way is Federer seeded 1 and Nadal seeded 2 when Nadal is ranked 1 and Federer is ranked 2? Did they make the draw for Wimbledon before the French was over or something?

It's not based on world rankings. And 6 titles to 1 probably means something to the people doing the seeding.

Because Federer is considered a better grass court player.

Ah, just read the blurb on wiki:

The Men's singles seeds is arranged on a surface-based system to reflect more accurately the individual player's grass court achievement as per the following formula:

* ESP points as at a week before The Championships
* Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months
* add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that

Does anyone know why the seedings don't follow those of, say, the NCAA tournament?
For example, if the top seeds all won out, the semis for the men would be 1 vs. 3 and 2 vs. 4. In the round of 16, you could also have 6 vs 9, 7 vs 12, etc.

I've always wondered why Tennis tournaments have 1 v 3 & 2 v 4 in the semis (assuming no upsets along the way). I'm not sure all tennis touneys are set up that way but I have noticed this in the past.

They do a draw to figure out who you play against. It's based on seeding but not an exact NCAA tournament style bracket.

I think the basic process is they draw seed 1 and 2 and put whoever they draw in the "1 spot" and the one they didn't draw in the "2 spot" then repeat the process for 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, etc.

EDIT: By "basic process" I mean it's something to this effect. I have no idea what the groupings of the actual draws are.

1 & 2 are in opposite halves -- they cannot meet until the finals

Whenever I read any English websites, they seem to be pretty much claiming Murray for England -- everyone's cheering him on. You definitely won't find this with the Scottish/Irish writers and the English soccer team (especially when the English soccer team isn't doing too well, like this year)

That sort of event, while extreme, isn't that out of the ordinary when you have a serve specialist (say Isner) on carpet or grass who is serving well against a better player who doesn't hit a lot of aces. Lots of games held at love, lots of aces, lots of losses in tie-breaks by the guy hitting the aces.

I cannot watch the match. Certainly they are both routinely dominating on serve. Are the points quick and easy for the server? THere cannot be too many long rallies, I would think, because the server's edge is usually lost after 5 or 6 groundstrokes.

I want Mahut to win only because he's the only one who's really trying to return tough shots. Isner lets way too many balls go unplayed.

It's called conserving energy, son. When you play an 8+ hour match, you will understand.

What happens if we steal their rackets? If we steal their rackets, the zombies can no longer hit their aces and thump their backhands and keep us all prisoner on Court 18. I'm shocked that this is only occurring to me now. Will nobody run onto the court and steal their rackets? Are they all too scared of the zombies' clutching claws and gore-stained teeth? Steal their rackets and we can all go home. Who's with me? Steal their rackets and then run for the tube.

It's 48-48. What further incentive do you need?

dlwktb

The umpire climbs down from his chair and starts mildly slapping the net cord with his right hand. No one knows why. John Isner winds up for a backhand and misses the ball entirely. No one knows why.

What's going on here? Once, long ago, I think that this was a tennis match. I believe it was part of a wider tennis tournament, somewhere in south-west London, and the winner of this match would then go on to face the winner of another match and, if he won that, the winner of another match. And so on until he reached the final and, fingers crossed, he won the title.

That, at least, is what this spectacle on Court 18 used to be; what it started out as. It's not that anymore and hasn't been for a few hours now. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it is long and it's horrifying and it's very long to boot. Is it death? I think it might be death.

42 games all.

Not watching this but if Isner is getting by just serving, I don't think serving a lot of balls is that physically difficult for him. I would consider the shorter greatest match of all time (Chang - Lendl) to have had more of a physical impact on the players than I suspect this match is having.

Then you have guys like Jim Courier who used to run for an hour after a French Open 5 setter to unwind.

Interesting question would be: if they have to finish up tomorrow, does the winner play Friday? I think you have to or scheduling gets very tight. If the winner wins today I think the next match is Friday.

It's 56 games all and darkness is falling. This, needless to say, is not a good development, because everybody knows that zombies like the dark. So far in this match they've been comparatively puny and manageable, only eating a few of the spectators in between bashing their serves.

But come night-fall the world is their oyster. They will play on, play on, right through until dawn. Perhaps they will even leave the court during the change-overs to munch on other people. Has Roger Federer left the grounds? Perhaps they will munch on him, hounding him down as he runs for his car, disembowelling him in the parking lot and leaving Wimbledon without its reigning champion. Maybe they will even eat the trophy too.

Growing darker, darker all the while.
