online auctions last year I had heard were riddled with the other AP being nominated. in a friend league, it would be hillarious assuming you can guarantee the payment. in a league of strangers online I can see it turning into one angry owner on autopilot and f'ing up the league.

Sorry guys I'm double-checking many trades with you guys but it's my first time playing fantasy football and I don't want to be screwed.

My league is usualy yahoo points with 4pb QB TD.

I have :

Schaud, Roeth, Vick (FA)
A. Johnson, S. Smith NYG, wallace, driver, breaston, Bowe (got him on waivers)
S. Jackson, Charles, Jacobs, Maroney
Witten
Keading,
NYJ

A co-worker would agree to Bowe + Vick for CJ Spiller and Hightower

That's a gimme right?

We got a new thread just for trades:
http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?t=200555

And Bowe wasn't drafted in your league? I don't think the trade is a gimmie given Hightower has competition when Wells is healthy, and Spiller didn't look so good week 1 on a really bad team. You do need running back depth, tho.

Yes. Bowe can't catch which is problematic for a WR. Vick might not start after week 2. Keeper league?

So what are the odds that I can get 12 points out of Hartley tonight? (3 pts per FG, 1 for PAT, no deduction for misses.)

A related question, what are the odds that my bench gets 5 TDs, and my starters get 1?

Not uncommon for the bench to outscore the starters. We had a reversion to the mean this week.

I need good games out of Brees and Crabtree tonight, and a bad game out of Vernon Davis. About 28 points down at this point. Definitely doable, but I'm not feeling real good about it.

If it's 6 pts per passing TD, Brees can easily get 28 by himself, at which point it's a race between Crabtree and Davis. Good luck!

In one of my league (not the same as mentioned in my previous post today), we have designated bench spots (1 starting QB, 1 bench QB, 2 starting RBs, 2 bench RBs, etc). With the exception of my QB, each bench position outscored each starting position. And most of the spots weren't even tough decisions. For example, Peyton Hillis outscored Jamaal Charles, Braylon Edwards outscored Greg Jennings. I just need 10.5 points from Pierre Thomas tonight and I'll have a decent 1-1 record, otherwise I'm in the same miserable, embarrasing, pathetic shape as the 0-2 Cowboys.

Had an insane week... 117 pts

My opponent entered MNF with 26 pts behind, and guess who he had... Frank Gore.

went 1-3. I needed like 3 more points from brees in one league (6 pts per td, 25 yards per points).

This week is the first time I have been truly pissed off by the results.

Lost by 8 points. In got hit by the injury bug on both sides (hurting my players and helping my buddy's).

He got 24 points from. KEVIN WALTER, Houston (more balls his way because of injury to Andre Johnson).

I got a combined 7 points from the following:
Hines Ward (Dixon injured)
Ryan Mathews (injured in 1st quarter. Was running well, too)
Jamal Charles (coach had a brain injury and under utilized him).

I really thought I was going to finally win this weekend until the late games just ruined everything!!!

how injured is matthews?

He says he is fine and he could have gone back in. He was walking with a slight limp after the game. It is his ankle, so you never know.

In my other league (which is a goof/for fun league) we did an auto draft and i forgot to update my ranking before the draft. I somehow won this week despite the fact that my top "projected" starters did nothing (MJD and Favre). I even broke 100. Thank goodness I started Best over Spiller this week.

So the team that I put less effort into is doing better than the one I am trying to win with. :shake2:

Funny story:

This guy in our league is a moran. Last year, he picked Nick Folk in the 6th round of the draft. This year, he picked Thomas Jones in the 1st round (7th overall). We don't say anything because we like his money, and it's up to him to figure out how to print off a current cheat sheet.

Anyways, this week I picked up Mike Williams (TB) on the free agent market and dropped Braylon Edwards (no waiver in this league for some reason). Appearently this moran had posted a message Sunday afternoon saying "I'm going to pick up Williams and drop Evans." Now he's all pissed saying I should drop the guy because he "called" him, and it's not his fault he works for a living and can't access the computer during the week. Not my problem I say.

Obviously there really isn't anything to dispute here, and the Commish is on my side. Just thought I'd share.

I think the funnier part is that Mike Williams wasn't drafted by anyone. Any league openings?

Is he #1 in the waiver order?

If so, I'd let him have Williams. No need in letting him leave the league angry over Mike Williams.

What is going on in Buffalo? I know that's not a real exciting offense or anything, but I drafted Spiller and in the last round picked Jackson as his handcuff. Now it sounds like Spiller is going to get eased into things slowly and Lynch has passed Jackson again. Does anyone have a clue? I already have stashed Roethlisberger and Holmes and can't really afford to tie up two more roster spots with guys who aren't getting touches.

what do people think of a trade involving caddy williams and brandon jacobs?

i'm mostly interested in their upside/mostly likely/downside production for this year, but it's an auction keeper league with 300 salary cap...caddy is likely to break down (possibly soon) and averaged < 2 ypc on 27 carries last week (yuck!), and no one really knows jacobs' role yet as long as bradshaw stays healhty (not a given by any stretch) - i think last week was somewhat anomolous since they got blown out. is he going to get some goal-line work (he's never been great at it, but did have a ton of TDs just 2 years ago).

caddy would be 17 next year, jacobs 30 (I think bradshaw is a UFA.) i'd say they both have <50% chance of being kept next year at those prices at the moment, but let's think in relative terms here (for comparison, RB prices this year included portis 27, spiller 27, barber III 26, jacobs 25, bush 25, d.brown 24, huggins 20, mcfadden 18 (looked like he was mike bush's backup at the time), t. jones 16, f. taylor 15, c. taylor 14, mcgahee 14, buckhalter 13)

12-team league w/ 3 starting RBs, so both of these guys are sadly still in the picture as a RB3/RB4 types. TDs count 6 pts, 40-79 yds = 2 pts, 80-125 = 7 pts.

I think the funnier part is that Mike Williams wasn't drafted by anyone. Any league openings?

Our league manager is power happy, and makes silly rules. For the most part it works, and makes the league have more parity. But it does create odd situations. We have set bench spots in this league, so your roster must be exactly 2 QB, 4 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 2 D/ST, 2 K. It's kind of goofy, but really keeps a great FA market all year round. If you get smacked with an injury, you can normally find a decent backup because people don't hoard the Ringers and Snellings.

Anyways, since it's a 10 team league, there's only 40 WRs drafted. I could see some people putting Williams in the top 40, but it's not that crazy that he didn't make the cut. By the time the later rounds approach and people are picking their last WR, it's usually is a crap shoot on which guy you think will have better upside.

In hindsight, I made a bad bet with Braylon Edwards. I was hoping that 1. Sanchez passing game would improve and 2. Braylon would improve because he had more time to learn the offense in training camp, whereas last year he was thrown in. But oh well, I was able to easily make a switch.

We don't have waiver order. Another silly rule that should be changed IMO. Plus I'm in last place, had last overall pick, and hadn't made a FA pickup yet this season, so if there was any sort of waiver order, chances are I'd be #1 anyways.

I doubt he'd leave the league over that. He's the comish's best friend.

I guess it's worth mentioning I won the championship last year in this league, so I can't really complain about the silly rules (yet).

A few teams took a while to win their first player, most notably teams A & E, and thus for a while had the most money left to play around with. Also yes, team H was unfortunately on auto-draft...

Blech, I still like most of my team (L) in theory... the only moves I've made have been dropping Donald Brown from Brandon Jackson and dropping Garrett Hartley for Jeff Reed, but I'm about to drop to 0-4, the last winless team in the league (after losing the the other 0-3 team this week)

I should finally get my first win of the season in my league I actually care about.

I am up by 36 points and my friends just has Brady left tonight. As long as Brady does not go off with 5 touchdown performance, I should be good.

It seems like I drafted all of the "risk/reward" guys who have underperformed (guys like Shonn Greene, CJ Spiller), and none who have overpeformed (like LeSean McCoy, Arian Foster).

I'm 2-2 now, team has been as meh as my record. Each week it's good for 75-80 points, which will win some weeks and lose others. Last year I was lucky enough to have Chris Johnson, so far this season there is nobody who has given me one of those 100-yard/2 TD performances aside from that opening day gift from Forte before he reverted back to last year's version.

I used up my "one time" last night. I won by 4 thanks to Randy Moss's bagel! 2-2 is much sweeter than 1-3. In 4th (because my point total is higher than all but one 2-2 team) instead of 9th!

So what do we do with Vincent Jackson at this point? I have him in one league, and am getting sick of wasting a bench spot. But then I notice in all my other leagues his owners are holding onto him.

Drop him and use the spot during bye weeks?

Or hold onto him, I've gone this far?

Flacco, Roethlisberger
SJax, Charles, Hillis, Portis, Spiller, Felix Jones, Snelling
Smith-CAR, Lance Moore, Andre Johnson, Mike Williams-TB
Hernandez-NE
Cincy-def

I need to pick up a kicker and TE... not sure if Hernandez's value goes up with Moss being gone.

Drop Portis for a kicker? and who for a TE?

You have way too much spec at RB, get rid of Snelling and Portis, who's out at least 4-6.

Long term I'd stay with Hernandez, whose value definitely improves. I agree with DJZ on who to drop for this week.

Would you drop Felix Jones for Brandon Tate?

I am already stacked at RB with Charles, Mendenhall, Bradshaw and Best. My WR are C. Johnson, A. Johnson, Holmes and Maclin. We start 2 wr and 2 rb with 1 flex player.

RhoRho
10-08-2010, 09:38 AM
It would appear that way but I am in a 12 team league. My QB's are: Cutler and Ryan. My TE are Hernandez and Maeoki (flyer). I just acquired Ryan and Crosby for Garcon and Torain. I was desperate for a qb and those two guys were more than likely not going to start.

I forgot that I had a empty spot so I was able to pick up Tate without giving up anyone. I am hoping that Tate has a big game next weekend so that I can sell high on him for a top-3 TE.

Bess and Murphy are on the waiver wire. Are they worth a pick up and drop Felix?

I wouldn't be against Bess over Felix

As I discussed in the Trade Evaluation thread, I have a need for a start-every-week running back. For week 5, I picked up Torain hoping he'd become that guy. I didn't watch the game, but 40 yards on 16 carries doesn't sound too good.

Anyways, our league doesn't have waivers, so I can get up early tomorrow and target a new guy on free agency. Are there any backups worth picking up over Torain? I heard MJD, Addai, and Foster got hurt, but none of those injuries sound severe enough to bank on their backups. I guess BJax got a lot of yards, but I guess 70 can on one run, so I'm not sold on him by any means.

I also have Moreno and Pierre Thomas, so if either of them gets ruled out for week 6, I won't have to drop Torain. So which free agent sound the best at this point? Mike Hart-Colts, Daji Kareem-Jags, Rashaad Jennings-Jags, Derrick Ward-Texans, Brandon Jackson-Packers?

Mind if I do a J?

PU, stink city. I'd stick with Torain. Of the guys you listed, Brandon Jackson is the most promising, as I expect MJD and Foster to play. Hart is somewhat appealing, but I don't know how they'll use him along with Donald Brown.

Torain is your best bet. I wouldn't judge him so harshly on 1 game, esp. since he played well in his previous 2.

Question to any LM's out there. I'm not a LM, but I'm going to start one next year.

I've got one league where (ignoring outliers), 2nd place and 2nd to last differ in total points by 40. This league gives more bonus points, scores more on pass TDs, etc, and is non-PPR.

In another league I'm in, the same stats differ by 160. This league scores less points, is conservative on def pts, qb pts, etc, and is also non-PPR.

Funny, because you'd think that by having more scoring opportunities, there'd be more variance. But it seems by having all the bonus pts, it actually causes less variance.

So if I want to set up a competitive league, I should mimic the more liberal scoring rules and have bonus points, etc?

MountainHawk
10-15-2010, 10:41 PM
If you are doing with for small stakes for a bunch of friends, bonus points and 15 or 20 point defense scoring is fine and can make it fun, but it takes some of the skill out of it.

If you are trying to have a serious stakes for serious cash, then you want straight up scoring, you probably want an auction draft, etc.

Probability Question:

A Fantasy Football Guru wishes to model the points scored by player (i) in a week (j).

i.) Let Xij be the total points scored for player i in week j.

ii.) The distribution of Xij is assumed to be normally distributed with parameters u and sigma^2. The parameters are estimated using method of moments. (negative values are possible)

iii.) The sample used for estimation consists of known but unprovided observations (available at ESPN.com).

iv.) The Fantasy Guru believes more recent observations have more predictive value than observations further in the past. To account for this, the Guru has decided to assign a weight to each observation, Wj, such that Wj = w/(n-j+1), where w is constant, j =1,2,...,n-1, and n is the current week.

What is Pr(Xij < 6.3 | i = Brandon Jacobs and j = n = Week 7)?

A. 0
B. 0.4
C. 0.6
D. 1.0
E. not enough info
