Most of the recruiters who call me leave a message saying that they are actuarial recruiters with XYZ, could I please call them back. (delete message)

There's one guy who left a message saying only that he needed to ask me something about a health care project. Having been on multi-company task forces, I figured he was involved with one of them and I'd just forgotten who it was.

When I called back and found out he was a recruiter, I was a little ticked that he didn't disclose why he called. His explanation was that he wouldn't want my boss to accidentally hear the message and suspect I was looking for another job.

So here are my questions:
1. Do you find that recruiters are secretive when they leave messages? This guy is the ONLY one who has called me without saying he was a recruiter.

2. Don't we all get enough random recruiter calls that a boss who hears your message (not very likely to happen anyway) would think nothing of it? Or does it concern you that someone might leave a voicemail telling you that they're a recruiter?

The guy's a jerk. Make a note of his name and never call him back again.

Sounds obnoxious to me.
When any recruiters call me they usually just leave their name and phone number with no message.

Oh Yeah

Does the guy have initials A.L.?

What I hate even more is those recruiters who can't even get a friggin' 800 number. Good incentive for integrity... I'm not gonna call back a recruiter on the company's phone bill, thank you very much.

One of them was in Canada but did not mention it and I used my cell phone to get back to her. Those international charges are pretty good too.

this dude calls me one day. really obnoxious. i tell him i'm not interested, and to be polite i add "call me later."

(((((dream sequence music; swirl screen)))))

6 months pass, i get a voicemail:
"Hi CD, give me a call! (nnn) nnn-nnnn"

I have no idea who it is; probably an old coworker whose voice i don't recognize but might be looking for a reference or something... same effing recruiter. THIS time i told him to get lost.

No, it wasn't A.L., but he's also a total jerk. It was B.M.

I get a little irritated when they leave messages with just a name and number, but to say, "I need to ask you a quick question on a health care project" is deceiving.

Glad to see that I'm not just insensitive to the need for confidentiality.

Lately the recruiters have all been using the line, "I'd like to know if you can help me out, do you know anyone who..." fits a description of a job I've seen posted on line somewhere.

Do they expect you to say, "Oh, why I fit that description."

Also I don't like the fact the recruiters are calling me when I just changed jobs in September and many of them called me at my prior job and are now "just following up" as if I'm looking after 3 months on the job.

Is Alan L (oops!) still doing recruiting work? This guy scares me more than just a little!

<font size=2>A couple of years ago, I got a call from a recruiter on my fourth day on the job. I'm not sure how he got my information... probably a naive reception-desk-person.

[edited because I forgot the font again.]

Many years ago I had a similar experience. I didn't have a phone yet, and the message got passed around the *entire* floor that X (very well know and uncommon first name) wanted me to call them back. Bad experience.

I think I know which first name you're talking about. He seems to be quite a persona.

You mean "Bucko"? Have you got all of his trading cards? I once transfered him into a speaker phone in a conference room. About 10 of us were ROFL.
"You must be married."
"Yes, why would you guess that?"
"Because if you were single you wouldn't have passed your exams so fast."
"I don't follow"
"Single guys spend all their time chasing poon."
"Oh. Good-bye."

he sent me a magazine with his picture in it... showing my wife the magazine was a little embarrasing because of all the nekkid biker chicks in it...

Don't know who Bucko is, and no, I don't think this recruiter is naughty like that. ROFLOL!

Maybe not. Maybe you will say "I know somebody who fits that description"; I think this is a tactful way to approach recruiting. I like it. It's better than "I have this job, do you want it?"

Some companies are so screwed up (or sometimes the match isn't quite right) that people are just that quick at leaving. You don't seem to like the soft sell. Are most of your friends used-car salesman?

Yes - very seriously. He also sent me photocopies of newspaper articles he appeared in and called me at home on the weekend and chewed my ear for hours and told me his complete autobiography.
