I haven't been to Jimmy John's in a long time (none where I currently live). The last time I was there (2002), I don't think they had this many options. I always got the Turkey Tom, which I believe was #4 at the time.

#10 HUNTER'S CLUB®
A full 1/4 pound of fresh sliced medium rare roast beef, provolone, lettuce, tomato, & mayo.

Not bad at all

Local radio host was pissing and moaning about JJ's. Went in for two sammiches. Wants basically ham and cheese, but with mayo. Apparently, the Slims are like $2.50, while the regular sandwich is $4.50. They will give him the sandwich without mayo for $2.50. But to add mayo, he has to get the #1 minus the tomatoes, lettuce, etc. They refuse to budge. They will give him mayo packets for free, but they will not put the mayo on the sandwich without charging him an extra $2 per sandwich.

here's why I don't like Jimmy Johns:

Sandwich price: $6.99

Can I have Pickles on that? Sure, $1 extra

Can I get cheese? Sure, $1 extra

Can I have lettuce instead of that stale alfalfa that tastes like hair? Sure, $1 extra

Can you hold the mayo? Sure, $1 extra

New sandwich price $10.99

Chopotle and Qdoba produce burritos around $6.70 after tax. A much better deal than whatever the sub costs at Jimmy Johns.

All they do is take a loaf of bread and put processed meat in there. They don't even cook it.

Right, they cook chicken breast or steak and put it on a tortilla that was made elsewhere and add some sour cream, cheese, salsa and guac, none of which they made in house, and hand it to you.

Jimmy John's bakes bread in house, adds meat (which like the meat at Chipotle is processed because it's not still on a cow but is natural), add some mayo they didn't make in house and hand it to you.

Seems comparable to me.

bakes bread? that's all you got? the bread is nothing special, and certainly doesn't taste like it was made "in house". i'm trying to think the last time i received such a low quality meal for such a high price as i have gotten every time from Jimmy John's.

Why do people here get all better-than-thou when it comes to food? Actuaries are such food-geeks.
Sure, most sandwiches can be made at home. But we don't always have all the ingredients. I don't even have real mayo in my house. So when I want to have a *real* sandwich, I have to eat out. Which is probably once a month, but I can still eat real mayo once a month without having to buy it and being tempted to use it when I want to make myself a quick, healthy meal at home.

Reading comprehension FAIL. I eat sandwiches outside once a month. When I eat out for real, I don't eat at TGIF/Red Robin's/Applebees. I eat at local restaurants where the chef actually comes and says hello. Where they cook authentic, whether Irish, Italian, Moroccan, or Thai. Meat that has been processed, which is to say, submitted to a process.

The meat at Jimmy John's is whole muscle and natural, just like at Chipotle (with the exception obviously of the cured meat which is cured with nitrate just like they do in small butcher shops in Europe).

Jimmy John's is completely overrated. I could go to a grocery store and make the same thing easily.

Thank god. I thought I was the only one that thought this. My wife called me at work one day when the only Jimmy johns in the area opened and told me she knew where we were going for dinner. She was so excited. i thought we were going to some really yummy restraunt that we hadn't been to in a while. Instead I end up at jimmy Johns where i can't even get a hot meal. And the best they have to offer is a hunter's club which I could make at home and not even have to go shopping first.

My major complaint about Subway is that I want a sandwich made the way its supposed to be made. They have all these different sandwiches, but then they're like, "Put whatever you want on it!" THEY are supposed to be the sandwich experts, not me. You tell me what I'm getting on my sandwich. When I go to Subway I say "I want it like the one in the picture" and they look at me funny because they don't know how to make the sandwich in the picture. "Sooo... what kind of cheese?", they might ask. "Whatever is on the one in the picture! You're the sandwich artist, not me!" I declare vehemently, shaking my fist at the poor struggling artist.

Jimmy Johns is good because you say which sandwich you want, and they make it. Every sandwich has a recipe. They follow the recipe. You can make substitutions if you want, but you don't have to figure out for yourself what makes a good sandwich.

I got the meatball sub at subway and they asked me what I want on it. I saw 'The Works' because that was the option I saw and it seemed like everything would be good. They then were like, wtf, you're supposed to put 1 or 2 things on a meatball sub. I was like, too late, I said it. Just put everything on it now.

A Jimmy John's opened up nearby recently, and like a previous poster's wife, mine was giddy at the thought of going. We went and ordered some rather expensive sandwiches. They were better tasting than Subway's, but on a quality/cost ratio, I'd pick Subway. After a homemade sandwich, of course.

But instead they are proud of the fact that all the serve is meat, cheese, sprouts, and mayo on home made bread. That is all any of the sandwhiches are. i can't even get a dang pickle on there. The guys at the one near me were sporting shirts that said:

Apparently their recipe for a good sandwhich is meat, cheese, sprouts, and mayo. cause best i could tell that's what ALL of the sandwhiches are. And to me that is not a good sandwhich. Where are the different sauces? Toasting of the bread and melting of the cheese? Different types of cheese? If they are the experts and this is what they came up with then I have to question how they became experts.

She claims it is all about the fresh baked bread. I told her I'd rather go to subway where they pile on whatever you want. She despises Subway. I then got yelled at for ruining her excitement.

Try Mercadito. I went there Saturday for some Mexican food, noticeable step up in both price and quality from Chipotle.

Mercadito is better than Chipotle, but you're paying more for atmosphere than for great food. Good spot for a date night, but purely based on greatness of Mexican cuisine versus cost, there are probably 50 better Mexican places in Chicago to eat. Of course, if you want to go to a club downstairs after dinner and see coked-up bi-sexuals, Mercadito probably is a go-to spot.

Actually the real winner is Quiznos. Their sandwhiches are the bomb. The sandwhiches are usually put together well, you can have them make it just like in the picture and it is delicious. It is hot. The meat is not simple deli meat. Real chunks of chicken, turkey, or beef and fresh veggies. The down side is of course the price at Quiznos. But i'd rather pay 7 to 8 bucks for a 12 inch sub at quiznos than pay $5 for any of the options at subway or $7 for a completely inferior sandwhich at JJ.

Dude, I'm not young anymore and don't want to lead you down the wrong path. Some of the places that I used to go to are closed now, but there's always new stuff popping up. The whole North/Milwaukee/Damen area has tons of options within a 2 block radius. Sinibar was an awesome spot on Milwaukee but it closed (very diverse crowd), Red Dog used to be a good spot, The Map Room was good (don't know if it still is). The Holiday Club was a cool place to grab a few drinks, but it closed.

There are lots of cool places over in that area, although I don't think you're into the Double Door/Subterranean scene.

Get in a cab on a Saturday night, go over to North/Milwaukee/Damen, ask the cabbie what the newest hot spots are (most of those guys know where the hot women are).

And it's not in Wicker Park, but if you haven't been to the Funky Buddha, you'd probably like it there.
