USAA just laid off a bunch of people, though, and was recently taken OFF the Top 100 places to work list.

Of course, they are probably one of the few companies that ever made it to that list to begin with...

I used to live there. I think it's an interesting city and a great place to live if you can stand south Texas heat. (I couldn't.) Also you will have an easy time getting out-of-town friends/family to visit b/c it's a pretty popular tourist destination. Any specific questions about it?

I grew up in San Antonio. While I feel that you couldn't pay me enough to move back, most people I know think it's a beautiful city and love living there. SA has an extremely low cost of living compared to most big cities. However, as far as actuarial work is concerned, finding anything outside of USAA will be very difficult. If memory serves me correctly, there a tiny Towers-Perrin and a couple of other 2- or 3-man consulting firms. It is hotter and more humid in the summer than you would ever believe, though.
