Tired of it

Someone mentioned that you can download the Mathematica notebook reader for free. I downloaded it, but it looks like you need to have Mathematica installed to use the reader. I really don't want to pay $70 for a CD just to access that study note. Are there many pages to print out from it?

Thanks a bunch!

Given you're past posts, I suspect you're innocently serious about this. But think about it for a second :).

Given your grammatical misuse of the your/you're, I find it hard to believe you're (you are) telling somebody else to think about it.

I downloaded this and opened the file. It says there is a font or something like that called ActexStyles.nb missing, so it will use some other style instead. I am able to read the article, but in many of the examples, there is code (maybe Mathematica code) all over the place. Does anybody know if this code should be there? Do you know if the ActexStyles.nb file is available somewhere? Finally, do you think I should just suck it up and read the article with all this code embedded?

As a side note, are we supposed to print this article out and include it with our notes for the exam? If so, I don't want all this code taking up pages of printouts. Thanks.

Was anybody able to print out the notebook without cutting off half of each line?

there are separate formats for screen and printer - select the right one for printer.

Fortal,
I printed on Legal paper with almost no margins.

-----------------
I am trying to do the exercise 1 in the notebook and after I click on the EVALUATE button, it gives me the following error:

General::"disable": "\!\(\"System`FontSize\"\) is unavailable in this \
Mathematica-powered product."

I didn't see any output anywhere and I don't know how to get output for the exercise.

This also happened with me when I reduced the size in the format menu. It worked fine when I re-downloaded and re-opened the document.

I can't understand why they just didn't print the study note and included with the other notes; it would be much easier for everyone. The interactivity of the Mathematica notebook is not that much, and it doesn't make it worth it to have every candidate go through this hassle.

Anyway, now I have the damn thing printed out so I can read it and highlight it.

Thanks for the help.

For those of you that printed the internet download, how pages is it?

Oh, very pages. Just kidding. 32.

Although I didn't have problems fitting the printing to the size of letter paper, mine prints out to 114 pages. This may have something to do with my lack of the ActexStyles font. My notebook is also not interactive in the least.

Actuary1995 -

I seem to have a problem like yours. When I sent my to print, it came out to be 99 pages. I stopped the printer because that seem like to many (if pepeTHEgrate is to believed :o ). I also have all the Matematica code in the file and don't like it should be there. Anyone else have the problem and a possible solution? :-?

I still can't get mine to print the whole line across. I can't change the printing settings. When I go to the format and change the font size, it just reverts back to the original size. I tried the help and they showed me this menu which doesn't exist anywhere on my screen. Can anyone help me out.

I can't seem to print it out correctly either. So, are we allowed to include a printed copy of this in our binder for the pre-test. It doesn't seem right that they made it so difficult to print.

Does having the CD make it easier to print out?

I have the CD and didn't find anything in there that makes it easier to print out. I don't know what's the deal here, it's aggravating.

After you open the notebook from the Actex program, don't maximize the screen. Just print the notebook from the still smaller screen. Amazingly this works. I called the SOA about this and they told me to try this.

I also called the SOA and got the same answer. Hopefully enough people called and complained, so they will think twice before they decide to release a study note in this format again. It was extremely annoying.

Is this a required reading for pretest? what if I have no time left to go thru it?

Then you might end up enjoying your life a little "less" soon than you'd like... Just kidding...

But it's a risk you take, I believe, like in any other exam... you are leaving out a (new) piece of the syllabus.

This study note doesn't seem to have much valuable information in it. Not sure what they expect to test from it...

SOA put this on it's 2004 category : "Although the CD-ROM software package includes reading material, required reading is limited to the content and text of the interactive notebook. Candidates will not be tested on the content of the CD-ROM."

Does it mean that reading material in CD-ROM also includes content of interactive notebook but reading material in CD-ROM has much more than what we need to read for the pretest? I didn't have a chance to know what's in CD-ROM and what's in interactive notebook, so that's why I asked this stupid question. Thanks for your answer.

For the pre-test, all you have to do is have the notebook info. You need not run any models, but I think running some and writing up the results would be good practice for the seminar.

In the Fall 2005 Catalog, it is on page 56 under Internet Download.

That's OK - 5 days before my pre-test, it dawned on me that the Syllabus had changed since I ordered my study notes and there was now 60 more pages of reading to do!

It is on LTC, so I assume it is still the same. Plus the catalog since spring 04 has not shown it to be updated.

No, you really don't have to buy the CD. I think there should be a link or an attachement to the file - try to do a search - with the study note in ms word format. If you don't find it, I'll try to look it up when I'm home, I should still have it in my home pc.

I almost want to throw my computer away as I have trouble look for that stupid file, and then print out the reading.

As I was desperating praying for God, I remind myself to visit the forum and seek for enlightenment. and Ah ha! I ended up print out the reading easily. Now I am going to worry later at home to open that stupid interactive notebook file.

I love you all!
