If anyone has time, comments appreciated.

This is a limit holdem $5 1-table SNG at Pokerstars.

Overall, I think I played a pretty good game. Tight until I had chips, then pressed my advantage.

This was my first time at heads-up. Lesson learned: in heads-up, don't chase low straight draws. Almost cost me first place.

Going through these slowly. Hand #17, you fold top pair after no one raises pre-flop to tell that they have anything strong and a small bet comes out? Turns out, they didn't have strong hands, as you might have suspected. They limped in b/c they had marginal hands. Many do this. You did. I know you're going to say that your kicker is weak if someone else has an Ace, or that Ultimate One could have been playing A-J, but he likely would have raised pre-flop with it to thin the field. I think a raise might have been in order. Try and define other people's hand with it. See if his bet could stand a raise or was he betting at the pot after no one showed strength pre-flop. Also, then you either win it right there or you know to get out if you get called and don't get any help on 4th or 5th or you get out right away if someone plays-back at you.

Yet, the very next hand, you call the same sized bet with middle pair! Fortunately you get the help you needed. And good job not slow playing your trips here.

Hand #51, you flop trips, but check it and give a free card that could hurt you, specifically making someone's straight or giving them a draw at one and making it worth it to them to call a reasonable bet on the 4th street. Had the flop been 10-10-2, maybe you give a free card because there's no one-to-a-straight possibility for someone. Someone holding J-9 or 9-7 (suited), may looking to draw on you. Never give a free card if that free card could hurt you. You wound up having to show down. You should have won that hand without doing that. I would have bet my trips.

Hand #52, what are you drawing to? One of the 2 other 2's? Short of that, the bet on 4th street tells you you're beat. She calls pre-flop and on the flop, indicating she has medium cards. An 8 and a 6 hit the board, then she bets. She likely either paired one up or has a straight or flush draw. You have a flush draw too, but it's a 9 and as the game gets short-handed, you start playing draws less and less b/c the pot odds won't be there for you. I think maybe you called it not really knowing what you were drawing to.

No, I thought I was the only A, but did you notice the suits? Three spades on the flop. Someone could have made a flush already, or one more spade and I'm beat. If there had only been two spades, I likely would have raised.
Yet, the very next hand, you call the same sized bet with middle pair! Fortunately you get the help you needed. And good job not slow playing your trips here.
I thought the overcard and three to a flush were enough to warrant one small bet. I would have folded to a raise.

They'd have either bet their flush harder after the flop or re-raised you, telling you.

I didn't consider TT8 a serious straight threat. Thought the slow play would get significantly more out of her. I see your point, though. Interested what others think on this one.

Almost cost me first place.

tough play here. i like it, you're looking to flop a set. I might make a stab at the pot right away after the flop, and then get out if she calls or raises.

I'll try to find time later to comment on the rest.

Hand #71, obviously you re-raise but why only to 800? To squeeze more out of her? 8-8-2 is the perfect flop. And K-2 is what you wanted her to have. Flop two pair with a great kicker. Put her to a real test with your raise.

I don't find it a terrible play they acted first and checked. Most players with an open ended straight draw would make a bet at the pot. otoh you gave a free card to an inside straight draw. This play prolly wont burn you too often but the $ gains by doing the slow play are likely less than the $ losses for the times you get burned. In the long run it's prolly not the best move. It's more acceptable in limit than nl as you won't lose everything if they hit the straight were you might not be able to wiggle out of it in nl.

Another thought on the trips tens vs. straight draw.

Currently I have her beat.

If she has the draw, she has eight outs to the straight.

But, if I catch a T, either of the other board cards, or my other hole card, I still beat the straight. Doesn't that give me 10 outs? Isn't this a favorable situation?

Not that I was thinking that deep at the time.

If she draws an QJ976 you can no longer be sure they don't have a straight. Now if any of those come on the turn she may have you beat at that point. sure you could out draw her on the river. but its not a situation you want to be in. Be content with taking the smaller pot. (easier said than done)

OK, I see your point.

If the flop were TTx, no straight or flush draws, do you like the slow play, or should I still bet on the flop?

TT5, TT4, TT3, TT2 with 3 suits, then i wouldn't mind a slowplay. Even when they pickup a flush or straight draw on the turn they won't get correct odds to draw.

I used to wonder why you guys were always talking tourneys rather than ring games. Now I understand. It's much more exciting, and if played right and a little luck seems to be more profitable, too.

This was actually my third tourney last night.

First - played loose early with intent to tighten up, never really tightened up, came in fourth (top 3 were paid).

Second - intended to play tight from the start, got really, really bad cards, was first out.

Third is above. Intended to play tight from the start, and for the most part I did. A couple exceptions above, like A3o, but I mostly folded the dominated hands, and folded the lower high cards often in early position. I don't recall, but I must have thought I had a read on the A3 call. I typically throw that out with lots of players.

However, Ax seems good with few players left. Where do you make the cutoff? I guess stack size factors in, too.

Ax becomes better as the number of players left shrinks. It also depends if you are the first to vol. add money to the pot. Its a hand that if you play should prob be played for a raise preflop to give yourself a chance to buy the pot.

Ring games can also be quite profitable. Each time you win a hand in a ring game you're making money. However i also enjoy the single table tournaments as you get a sense of accompishment when you win them. Plus no matter how bad you play it's only going to cost you the entry fee, and usually gives you a fair amount of entertainment for your $'s if you don't cash.

I agree with bama about the additional luck required in the party singles due to the blinds increasing every 10 hands, and not on a time basis. I entered 2 singles last night.

The first i entered $10+1 limit, i could do no wrong in the first half of the tournament. getting good cards, and getting all my bluffs to work, and when i had the cards getting paid off all the way. However luck turned around when the limits got higher and when i got good cards i couldn't flop anything, ended up finishing 4 or 5.

The second tourny a $10+1 nl, i couldn't get squat the first half of the tourney so i played tight and watched 3 guys leave fairly quickly. Blinds start to get fairly high and im sitting on 600 chips 4 guys with 1500+, 2 with 300. I get a pocket pair of 8's and get to go all in against a smaller stack and win that hand. Following hand i take out the other small stack after seeing a free flop. with the other blinds i'm now up there close to the others. sit back and relax for a while, when i get the opportunity toss in a bet to buy the pot (supported by tight play throughout the tourney.) Watch a couple of guys get knocked out, and stay out of big trouble until we are heads up. Get dealt a bunch of junk and do more than my fair share of folding in both the sb and bb as my opponent only comes in for a raise (similiar to me) when he plays a hand. Finally get TT in the bb, he raises = to the bb and i got all in. he's got me covered only by maybe 700. flop comes with an A and my heart sinks. no T's throught the river so i figure i'm out, they finally reveal the cards, i was up agianst Kxs, so not i'm a huge stack advantage. get KT the next hand go all in he calls his few chips and i win. A few good cards at the right time. waiting to buy pots until the i've established a tight image, as well as waiting for the blinds to be worthwhile stealling. bam a win, up $28 for the night. So far through my experience those making the final 3 at single tables are usually all fairly good, and it comes down to a combination of patience and good cards at the right time.

Sorry for the off topic question ... but does anyone here play the 4 player match SnG they have on Pokerstars? If so, any differing strategies on playing heads up than the single or multitable tournaments?

I've played a few, strategy is similar to that of the heads up section of the single tables. Most hands are playable just need to wait for the right time.

Sorry for the off topic question ... but does anyone here play the 4 player match SnG they have on Pokerstars? If so, any differing strategies on playing heads up than the single or multitable tournaments?I'll play it every now and then to keep my heads-up game sharpe. Playing heads-up is a much different game. No time to wait for a hand. It's much more of a feel game. Strategy varies greatly by the type of player your playing.

I've played a few, strategy is similar to that of the heads up section of the single tables. Most hands are playable just need to wait for the right time. The main difference being that usually when you get heads-up at the end of a SNG the blinds are large relative to the stack sizes. This is not true at the start of a heads-up match.

True, depending on how quick your tables play this can be a big factor, however you shouldn't need the lower blinds to get a feel of the other player.

Usually when i play at stars i'll enter 2 tournys at once i'll hop in a single $5 nl, and a 2 table $5 nl. it amazes me that the 2 table often reduces to a single table before the single table reduces to 6 players. with tourney starting within 2 minutes of eachother i've even had the 2 table with less remaining players than the single. nevertheless the double slows down as 6 players battle for 4 cash spots. and the single usually finishes up right about when the double gets into the final 4. I prefer this to 2 singles as i don't like to be playing 3 handed or heads up at 2 tables at the same time.

Here's my statistics for the above tourney:

Tournament History for last 1 tournament requested by Voter
PokerStars Tournament #756332, Limit Hold'em
Buy-In: $5.00/$0.50
9 players
Total Prize Pool: $45.00
Tournament started - 2003/12/30 - 21:55:03 (ET)
Tournament finished - 2003/12/30 - 23:07:43 (ET)
You finished in 1st place (eliminated at hand #227305665).

107 hands played and saw flop:
- 23 times out of 32 while in small blind (71%)
- 20 times out of 34 while in big blind (58%)
- 7 times out of 41 in other positions (17%)
- a total of 50 times out of 107 (46%)

Pots won at showdown - 13 out of 21 (61%)
Pots won without showdown - 31

Of course the blinds stats are skewed because I reached the final two. Didn't realize I was that tight in other positions.

Any comments on these?

Yet another tourney question (thanks for your patience).

Yesterday I was observing a multitable tourney. It was down to 2 or 3 tables. Things were moving along, then a guy with few chips used half his time bank on one hand, and half on the next. People said things like "I know what you're doing," and he said "You'd do the same if you had my chips." However, I don't know what he was doing.

Shortly after that the game changed to 'hand-by-hand' mode or something. Seemed that each table had to wait for the others to finish a hand before starting the next.

Can someone explain these two things?

the numbers are difficult to use when in a tournament because the number of hands played shorthand varies from tournament to tournament skewing the numbers. I think the poker tracker will compile these numbers over multiple tournaments based on number of players at the table, which will give you a better idea of how loose / tight you are. Also remember picking up the blinds preflop doesn't count as seeing a flop. this could vary your numbers significantly as well.

Can someone explain these two things? When it gets close to the money players on the bubble (have very chips) start stalling hoping that others will bust out and they will make the money.

Hand-by-hand means all tables start a hand at the same time and they don't deal another hand until all tables have completed the hand they are on. This makes stalling worthless.

it's also interesting to note that about 50 hands were played with more than 3 players at the table and the other 57 hands were played with 3 or less players at the table.
i would think limit has the tendancy to see more flops than nl.

The time bank in poker stars seems to do a better job at reducing stalling than the individual hand timer at party. Stalling at party can start as many as 20 players prior to the cashing spots. and it seems as if you play one hand per 5 minutes.

I would like to see both sites jump to hand for hand a little earlier, say 10 spots to go, to actually help speed up play. (it slows play in the early round as one table may go all the way to the showdown while another may not even see a flop.) The hand for hand currently kicks in with one player to go before moving up the pay scale. This prevents a player with lets say 1000 chips getting knocked out 5 seconds prior to someone with 500 chips because the 500 chips stalled at a different table.

I once played at a table with someone i guess fairly familiar with live tourney but not with online tournies. He began to stall just minutes before the first break. When asked by others at the table why, he claimed he was trying to miss the blinds. Apparently he thought that everyone got shuffled to new tables at the break... Funny thing about it is his stall worked just well enough to make him pay bigger blinds as the blind level increases at the break.

For what its worth, party poker allows a maximum 2 disconnect all in treatments in a tournament. (you get all all in "bank" never can be more than 2 at any one time, if you use your 2 you can request all in reset which is granted freely upto 2 or 3 times in a 7 day period. however in a tournament you are allowed a maximum of 2 allins). You cannot simply time out (not respond) you must actually disconnect from the net for the all in treatment to work. These can be used to your advantage say you put money into a pot with decent cards but don't want to call all you're chips on the hand. if you disconnect you are treated as all in with the chips you put into the pot and keep your remaining chips safe. This isn't widely known, nor would many players know when to use this option if it were widely known. since you only get 2 chances at this in a tourney you must only use when conditions are right.

PokerStars does not allow any of these all in treatments during a tournament. To prevent eliminating a player from a hand in an honest disconnect they typically give you additional time (2 minutes maybe) to return to the game when you're in a money spot. havn't had time to figure out just when this additional time happens.

I would hope if someone makes a habit of disconnecting when someone bets them all-in during a tournament that Party would pick up on this. If someone did this at my table I would report them immediately.

The correct time to use this feature would not come up very often. ie you're teatering on a borderline significant money jump, enough action (3 or 4 way action on the chips you put in). I prefer pokerstars stance on this issue, but if i'm at party and talking about real cash, I'm using whatever means available to me. You're usually only at this point because the stalling of all the other players have made the blinds even larger than they should be.

Expunge... Thats disapointing to hear. I play party poker and have reported a few people who used disconects to their advantage (obvious situations where they thew half their stack in, hit high pair but they have a bad kicker, somebody tries to take them all in and they disconect).

The reporting process was a joke.. i'm not sure PP actually does much to inforce it. And sadly as you pointed out most people are too clueless to notice somebody doing it. Each time i brought it up and nobody else understood what i was complaining about. I've never used it to cheat.

I agree with axjoke. that is very disappointing to hear that you use this tactic ever Ex. I also always report when people do this and actually think something happened to the guy - banned. At least, that's what party told me, and I haven't seen them around. It's cheating - flat out. Think what would happen if you tried to do this when you're face to face..

From partypoker.com

4. If a Player is disconnected during the play of a hand, they will be deemed "All-in" (and can win whatever is in the pot at the time of the disconnect).

5. If a Player is disconnected while playing and uses their All-ins, The Player should reset their All-ins upon their return (or the Player will be automatically Folded the next time, rather than deemed to be All-in).

6. Players are allowed to use only two (2) All-ins in a Tournament from his available quota/limit (refer point 12), due to a disconnection problem.

7. A Player may request for an All-in reset by using either of the following two methods:

a) Go to Lobby --> Click on 'Options' --> Click on 'Request All-ins Reset'; OR

b) While at the table, click on the 'Dealer's Chip Tray' to get the options. One of the options is 'All-in reset'. Just click it to send an All-in reset request to us.

8. On the successful resetting of a Player's All-in count, the Player will receive a confirmation.

9. PartyPoker.com reserves the right to alter this policy and render final decisions on all matters herein at its sole discretion. Policy changes and relevant decisions will be communicated accordingly via PartyPoker.com via electronic and/or written means.

10. Our software is designed to detect whether a Player had a genuine disconnection before giving the All-in protection to him. If a Player tries to get All-in protection by simply not acting on his/her turn and getting "timed out", he/she is deemed 'Folded'.

11. All-in resets are allowed thrice weekly on a 7 days period. This means that before PartyPoker.com successfully processes a Player's All-in reset request, we will determine whether the Player has reset their All-ins more than three times in a week within a 7 days period. If the Player has, PartyPoker.com will not reset the All-ins automatically. (Please contact us.)

12. There is a limit of 8 All-ins (3 resets) within a 7 days period.

13. PartyPoker.com strives to offer the best All-in protection to our Players. Our goal is to protect Players who are accidentally disconnected, while also maintaining appropriate checks so that the protection might not be misused.

Based on your comments Ex, I think you fit into the bold category there. :shake:

I only play party poker and i know a few of you do too. What are your screen names so i can watch occasionally? Mine is idiotoutside.

I've tried the 30/3 tables 3 times and have failed miserable. The 10's have been kind as i get in the money about 50% of the time which pays for the 30's. Also tried two 5 dollar tournaments and agree with bamma after 2.5 hours and a 155th place (read not in the money) i decided they aren't too rewarding.

Also on the other sites do they have good 15 or 20 dollar games? I want to improve but it seems like i'm stuck in the middle of what PP has to offer.. not ready for the 30s..

i am fallaway at PP.com. I do well in 10 and 30 tournys. Up about 850 in 3 months of very sporadic low limit play.

these two table tournys at pokerstars sound pretty good. Is this site the same size as PP? i.e. over 10,000 players and usually over 20,000?

Does anyone else think you seem to gte far too many playable hands late in tournies? Maybe they ratchet it up a few nothces to get it over?

I play way more hands online than in real life games. Yet i don't try to be looser. Maybe the smaller limits and convenience and stuff?
