That's a great question, I'd like to be able to take the past exams using only the questions that are still applicable to the new Exam 5. Has anyone taken the time to figure this out and is willing to share?

I posted the same question a month ago or so and nobody responded. There has got to be a legend out there that can tell you what questions are still applicable.

I have gone through the last 6 years of Exam 6 and have compiled the following questions relevant to the new Exam 5B (since I am only taking that part):

2009: 1, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 31
2008: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9a, 11, 15 (possibly), 16, 27, 36
2007: 7, 8, 22, 33, 34, 35, 38, 39, 40, 43, 44, 46, 47
2006: 1, 2, 12, 15a&b, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 45

I've added a few problems to this that I think are applicable.

For 2008 #15, I don't think that the given question is covered by Friedland.

Here's the past three Exams:

2010 - ALL except for #1-4, 6-10, and 13-15. (First Exam using W&M.)
2009 - ALL except for #1-10, 13-16, and 25.
2008 - ALL except for #1-11, 38, 42, and 45.

Brief note regarding 2008 #25--May be a bit tricky confusing, but think of the "target cost ratio" as W&M's VPLR and you should be able to address the problem. Also, treat part c as if it were saying "calculate the indicated rate change before the tax change took place".

Thank you. I agree with all of your revisions to my list, except for the addition of #26 from the 2008 Exam 6. That seems to be a PEBLE question, and the Bouska paper no longer appears on the syllabus of either Exam 5B or Exam 7.

Sincerely,

I agree that part b as stated wouldn't be valid for the current syllabus . . . however, one should be able to address part a as a synthesis of knowing the various reserving techniques . . . namely that the type of claim is very low frequency and high severity makes these types of claims difficult to project their occurrence for a given AY.

A slight modification of part b could be asked under the current syllabus: "How should an actuary deal with such claims if they are found in the data?"
