He chose a perfect time to withdraw in my opinion.
Don't panic, Tiger.
I wonder where this round would rate on the improbability drive.

Oh, 42 on the front nine, not 42 for the round. Heh.

Dang. He was a last minute substitution to my fantasy team this week. I figured it might be a good time for him to make a comeback. That's hurtful.

This thread should have been titled "Tiger Pulls Out".

Either that or "Tiger pays respect to the AO."

He still gets tons of coverage, which is what the sponsors want.

His contract with EA runs through 2015, I think.

And he will be until a bigger name emerges. It won't be Phil Mickelson. Ricky Fowler has the flash but will he actually develop into a great golfer?

And he will be until a bigger name emerges. But why? Tiger is arguably the GOAT so if you're waiting for the next Tiger you may be waiting a long time. The media focuses on Tiger because that's what they've done for years. But he's now 35, his body is breaking down, his swing is going through a major overhaul and he'll never be the putter he was 10 yrs ago. This has been a very good year on the PGA with lots of playoffs, ratings are up despite Tiger's absence and there are a number of other American (and Int'l) players that are better than Tiger right now. Now's the perfect time to shift the focus to other players.

The game is still what prevents most people from watching it. Time to focus on the fans that will watch.

Rory McIlroy is looking like he's going to take over golf imo. I also think he's got the temperament that sponsors want even more than Tiger did.

What do you think of Jason Day, Martin Kaymer, and Matteo Manassero? They look really good to me as well. Kaymer already has a major and I expect the others to win at least one.
As for the Americans, I think Dustin Johnson is the best bet among those under 30.

Got to see part of this humiliation in person today
Watched him almost put a ball into he crowd on 5, walked around for a while, caught up with him as he was working on 9, then decided to walk ahead to 11 to get a good spot and wait for him. Of course, he never made it that far.
Just sharing

Exactly. I can't think of a more universally loved accent. Also, this accent will give him the ability to nail more women than Tiger did even.

What's his major count? I think he's still behind Jack by several. Wasn't long ago (maybe three years) that the discussion was when he would pass Jack and by how much.
I don't think he's done, he could easily re-hab himself and come back again, but pretty sad state of affairs right now.

Really? Tiger is coming off an injury and hadn't picked up a club for a month since The Masters. Noone to blame for that one but yourself.

A few years ago, it was "when" Tiger would pass Jack. Now it's "if."

Didn't he just finish 3rd in the Master's a month ago?He was T-4 thanks to two great 9s - the back nine on Friday and the front on Sunday. The other six 9s he was even par. He knows Augusta well enough that he can will himself around there for 4 days and be competitive as evidenced by his T-4 in 2010. Problem is he doesn't make the putts he used to or intimidate the other players like he used to.

He also finished around 4th in 2010 then disappeared in the other three IIRC.

Intimidation factor is overrated. But he certainly hit the ball well enough to win. Just missed a lot of putts and had a couple 3 putts where he hit the ball to the exact safe spot he was aiming. He has won several of his majors without hitting the ball nearly as well as he did. I think the putting will come back. Or he will just get luckier and the lip outs will go in more.

lol ditka you are way off on this one... Sorry bud.
nobody can replace Tiger IMO. Anyways, he has lost alot of goodwill in the last two years. Too arrogant. his life story and his physical manifestation is what made him so popular (apart from the golf talent).

His body can be fixed. Modern medicine is amazing, and I'm sure Tiger can afford the best surgeons on the planet to put his knee back together again well enough for him to play competitive golf. I don't see why a 35 year old can't be just as good a putter as a 25 year old. Sure, he'll never hit the ball as far as he used to be able to, but lots of majors are played at places where hitting the ball a mile doesn't mean much. He'll never dominate the sport so completely again, but I'm pretty sure he'll find a way to average at least 0.5 majors per year for the next ten years.

If he can fix his knee he will win more tourneys and do well in majors. Don't think he will catch Jack though

His problem is he has 5 years left to win majors. People just rarely win after age 40 although a few have. The field is only getting tougher too.

Agree that it's five years, not ten, so he needs to win 1/4 of those to pass Jack. Even winning one after the age of 40 seems optimistic to me.
And he can afford the best surgeons, but if they were able to fix it so well, it seems like they would have done that five years ago or whatever, last time it was all messed up. Why would you believe that they can fix it now, when they couldn't then? I don't think medical technology has improved that much in just the lsat five years.
Add to that the distractions, the fact that his dad seemed to be a big motivator for him, and it just seems a lot less likely than it did just a couple years ago. Anybody know what odds London bookies are giving on him passing Jack?
