View Full Version : Good Time to Fly

The airports are empty, airlines are flying nearly full schedules with nearly empty planes. Security is as tight as humanly possible.

My company tells me that I have to cancel a business trip because some execs decided we shouldn't fly. They'll let me drive instead.

Presumably, in a couple weeks, when security isn't quite as tight, it will be okay to fly again.

I supposed to fly to Chicago on United for Farber's seminar. Since tickets were so cheap (I bought them prior to 9/11) I bought one for my daughter to (she'll be spoiled by our favorite auntie while I'm in class).

As of now, I'm still planning on both of us flying up. I can't imagine a safer time to fly.

Anybody disagree? Think I shouldn't fly? Or shouldn't fly with my kid?

Just do it! If you both die it was just meant to be.

As if any terrorist would be caught alive or dead in KC.
Call me when the airport gets a restaurant.

America West is offering great bargains right now. Buy and Fly. Take some time and get exotic. Opportunity is knocking big time. And if you get a chance to interact with a terrorist, show him your other cheek was turned so much that you are now Linda Blair's cousin.

The airport? Are you kidding? KCI has the best airport I've ever seen! The least amount of walking: car to terminal, Check-in to gate, and gate to baggage claim.

And they have added several new amenities.

Due to the lack of racial diversity in KC, any Arab will probably be strip searched at the airport.

You must not be from KC.

But I imagine that people who even LOOK Arabic are being scrutinized more at ALL airports.

I have been to KC many times. it is very white compared to much of America.

Then what was all that court-ordered racial busing about? If KC is so white, why do they need a school desegregation program?

Well - the Midwest in general is probably more "white" than say LA, Detroit, NYC or Miami.

No real point in arguing this - I think KC is about average over-all. When I go to the mall, I generally see Black, Hispanic, Arabic, Indian, Asian - without much looking around.

I actually agree with Traci on something! :smile:

Seriously, when has it been safer to fly? I'm not worried about my seminar flight. Small airports, small planes, tight security... The only thing is that I won't be able to show up 15 min before my flight like I normally do.

T, enjoy your trip with your daughter!

- Stay the $&#* away from KCMO;
- KCK is also a bit ghetto-ish;
- Overland Park is like the Plano of KC, especially south of 435 (very white);
- I wasn't there long enough to have an idea regarding the rest of the area.

I would take my children.

For one thing, they'd discover that reality is sometimes quite different from the headlines.

I would have to agree with the first two. I rarely go into KCMO - I don't know my way around and I ALWAYS manage to get lost - and I feel like a target in my minivan with the JOCO tag. But I did work downtown for 4 years - and so was familiar with that area.

Although, I'm glad my office is no longer on the middle floor of the tallest building in the city.

KCK is actually very beautiful - it sits up high on a bluff and has some wonderful architecture - some beautiful old victorian homes. But - unfortunately, it does have high crime.

Johnson County (Overland Park and surrounding) is actually supposed to be the most diverse county in the state. But that might not be saying much.

But, as I said, when I go to Oak Park Mall (in the heart of OP and JOCO) I do see a very diverse crowd. More diverse than some areas would otherwise indicate.

The particular neighborhood I live in is not very diverse. I'm guessing only about 5% non-white.

Well - she's only 3 - she doesn't have much concept of what's going on.

I got "Mommy why are you crying? Can we watch a video now?" a couple times - that was about it.

"I have been to KC many times. it is very white compared to much of America."

Then you haven't seen much of America.

If those are the critera for a good airport, I highly recommend Evansville, IN. Parking at the airport and entering the terminal are like going to the supermarket (in both proximity and the size of the parking lot and terminal). Obviously, with a terminal the size of a grocery store, you don't walk far for baggage either.

Well - KCI is an international airport, though - is Evanston?

The Mister
09-20-2001, 02:30 PM
No, Evansville is not an international airport. Most flights there consist of a "big" plane to Chicago followed by a puddle-jump to Evansville.

"Well - KCI is an international airport, though - is Evanston?"

Does a flight once a week to Toronto qualify the airport as "international"?

EvansVILLE - sorry about the typo.

Neither Evanston nor Evansville have international airports.
