breaking tables in Word

Or, more accurately, not breaking them. Word Perfect (which some of us older folk remember) had a "block protect" function, which would force the table (or paragraph, or whatever) to stay on one page. I can't get Word to do that short of manually positioning the table, which of course fails as soon as I add or delete lines farther up in the document.

It occurs to me that I could put the whole thing in a text box, but how lame is that? Is there a better way?

Haven't tried this, but could you try "protect widows/orphans", like you may do with paragraphs?

It doesn't always work as advertised, but if you highlight an entire row or series of rows and then choose Format/Paragraph/Keep With Next, that will force at least a portion of the table to stay together.

You can use the same dialog box to force a page break before the first row of the table.

Select all but the last row of the table, then choose Format Paragraph, go to the Line and Page Breaks tab and select Keep with Next. This should keep the table from breaking in the middle as you add text above.
