PD Restriction: You can only earn 15 credits before filing your initial plan.
My question: If I listen to tapes after I file my initial plan, but the date that the tapes were created were before I filed my initial plan do these credits count as part of the 15 credit restriction?

The date of the session is the date you go by, not the date you listen to the tape.

does that mean I can't listen to tapes from the Nov 2003 meeting if I just found out that I passed 1-8 last Friday (and have already done the 15 allowed before)

No offense plain M&M, but I hope you're wrong. Anybody else out there want to weigh in?

Plain M&M is right...date of the session is definitely the date used to determine when the 25 months start ticking, as well as whether the credits fall under the 15 allowed before initial plan. It clearly states that in the PD documentation on the SOA website. Look under "Professional Development Requirement-Overview". Towards the bottom is a section labelled "Plan Components"...under section A. it states the rules regarding the applicable dates for recorded programs.

I still don't get it - Unbelivable!
Here's my situation
15 credits already earned pre 1/16/2004
found out have 1-8 passed ON 1/16/2004
Preliminary Plan approved 1/29/2004
I want to listen to tapes from the spring meeting 5/2003
AM I ALLOWED TO (if I set the 25 month period to start 5/2003)
Afraid not. I'm in a similar boat as you. With a 9 credit seminar under my belt before the initial plan, I can only listen to 6 credits of tape from meetings before now. That's a little rough when they basically record only two health meetings a year, and I'm planning on attending the first one this year.
I don't see why the date of the event is relevent when they are already limiting the number of distance credits to 15.

Thanks for the clarification, .C!
Back to my situation, I have 8 credits that are unassigned. They can be non-SoA approved, since my other 42 will be. Any idea what my options are if I want to make it to the May FAC?

This is probably a dumb question but is the "15 credits before filing your initial plan" independent of any conversion credits a person may have from pre-2000 exams? If I have 30 credits from the conversion, can I take an additonal 15 before my plan is filed?
:duh:

The 15 credits are independent of any credits received from conversion. So of the 20 you have remaining, 15 can be done before the plan filing.

It's not a dumb question at all 7down1togo. The SoA response I got is that the exam conversion credits don't count toward the 15 pre-approval limit.
Good luck!

what about exams used for PD credits. I'm planning to use 25 from EA exams, 15 from a project. Can I do the other 10 before I submit my prelim-plan?

With the deadline for the May FAC being March 25, I would guess you need to submit your completed plan by atleast the end of February to have a chance at meeting the deadline as it seems the norm here for getting approval on a full 50 credit PD plan (no conversion credits) is taking about 4 weeks.
Can you give more details regarding the make up of your PD. Do you have any credits from exams prior to conversion? For example, if you have 30 credits from exams, the 8 you mention above, plus are looking for 12 more, you may have a chance at May. However, if you are submitting PD that includes a 15 credit project, the 8 you mention above, plus are looking for 27 more, that's a whole different story. In the later case you would in my opinion be pushing it to make the July FAC.
Thanks M&M and wtf!
Hey, careful there with those name abbreviations! :)

It would seem consistent to me that you could do the 10 credits early. It sounds like the PD person at the SOA is more than willing to help, so I would ask for clarification anyway. It's too bad that you can't send little candies or something through email to grease the skids a little bit like you can when you go to somebody's desk at work to ask for help.

I have done 15 already (and wrote them up) - these were the ones I was *allowed* to do pre-passing 1-8
15 more come from the project (which I plan on allocating 80 hours over about two weeks to complete)
12 come from a seminar I'm going to Feb 9-11 (and I hope to write up the sessions in the evenings of each day)
the final 8 I haven't decided on yet. I am doing a presentation for 1 hour to a group of city officials this weekend, so that is worth 3 more credits....so technically there are 5 non-spoken for to go (virtual campus perhaps?)
There wasn't much on the Virtual Campus for us health folks that I could find. Five credits might be stretching it.

you're just full of good news today, .c! HELP!
I'm planning on going to both the SOA Health Spring meeting in Anaheim and the AAA Spring meeting in D.C. That should be around 20 credits total. Will I see you at either, Acks?
Im glad you are discussing this topic as no one from my work is able to help me out here
I have 30 credit of PD, do i have to do a project, attend seminar or both to complete 50 credits, what are my options
Mr. C, do you have any details on the AAA meeting? I can't see anything on their website in terms of sessions, topics, etc. I'm also going to Anaheim, but need another meeting - the sooner the better - to fill out a health PD plan.

I don't want to wait until the spring meetings since I only have about 5 credits to generate. I think I will look to the virtual campus, then internal training activities/presentations.......
I'd like to make it to the May FAC if possible....
2 questions:
1. Is Virtual Campus credit distance learning? Does it count towards the 15 credit distance limit? Doesn't seem to be a lot there though.
2. How much do SOA or AAA meetings cost? Program brochures that I thought could provide that information (e.g. here (http://www.soa.org/conted/cearchive/vancouver/vancouver_final.pdf)) don't.

1. Many of the Virtual Campus classes provide PD credits. The program description specifies the exact amount of credits. These credits are counted towards distance learning along with seminar tapes (ie maximum of 15 total). Yes- there isn't a lot there to choose from.
2. I don't know how much the SOA annuals meetings cost. I attended a private seminar worth 9 credits which cost about $1,500. I think the SOA seminars would be cheaper though
