We need to have an Oscar predicting contest. Here is the nomination list (http://www.oscar.com/nominees/nomineelist.html). There are 24 categories total. Some are obviously more important that others. I was thinking of having Best Picture and Director worth 3 points. Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Screenplay would all be worth 2. The other 16 would all be worth 1 each. Does this scoring scheme seem fair, or should it be modified? Before people start posting predictions, I'd like some input on the game format.

Best Picture and Director worth 5 points. Best Actor and Actress worth 4 points each. Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress worth 3 points each. , Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay would be worth 2. The other 16 would all be worth 1 each.

Or why not just make a decision and go with it? It's your game, if nobody else likes it, to hell with them.

Weenie.

yeah, you don't want to get a debate going over the scoring system :)

Yours sounds fine. Either way, we can still predict without a scoring system in place, so we should start the predicting. How many predictable times can I say predict in this predictable predicting sentence predict?

cubedbee

Fine, no debate with the scoring. The final offical scoring is:

Best Picture, Director: 4 points
Best Actor, Actress: 3 points
Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Original/Adapted Screenplay: 2 points
Other Categories: 1 point

Academy Awards are on February 29 at 8 EST, so I will make picks due by February 29 at noon EST. You can edit our picks as many times as you would like, provided the last edit is before the deadline. Don't PM me your picks, post them here and increase your post count. I think glenn is out of prize, but I'll PM him and ask anyway.

Let's see if I can duplicate my Grammy success:

1. Best Picture: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

2. Actor: Tim Robbins, "Mystic River"

3. Actress: Charlize Theron, "Monster"

4. Supporting Actor: Djimon Hounsou, "In America"

5. Supporting Actress: Renee Zellweger, "Cold Mountain."

6. Director: Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

7. Foreign Film: "The Barbarian Invasions," Canada;

8. Adapted Screenplay: Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer Berman "American Splendor"

9. Original Screenplay: Jim Sheridan & Naomi Sheridan & Kirsten Sheridan, "In America"

10. Animated feature film: Very tough one. Triplets was on of the most original films in years, but the mere fact that it wasn't nominated for Foreign Film shows that not enough Academy voters have probably even seen it, so I will go with Finding Nemo.

11. Art Direction: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

12. Cinematography: "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,"

13. Sound Mixing: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

14. Sound Editing: "Finding Nemo,"

15. Original Score: "Finding Nemo," Thomas Newman

16. Original Song: "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from "A Mighty Wind," Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole;

17. Costume: " "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

18. Documentary Feature: "Capturing the Friedmans,"

19. Documentary (short subject): "Chernobyl Heart,"

20. Film Editing: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King,"

21. Makeup: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

22. Animated Short Film: "Nibbles."

23. Live Action Short Film:"Squash,"

24. Visual Effects: "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,"

25. Best Film Name Easily Adapted to Porn: "The Girl With a Pearl Earring".

26. Best Animated Short Film Name Easily Adapted to Porn: "Nibbles"

I'm honoured to be in the company of such great nominees. Without you all entering this contest, there would'nt be anything for me to win.

Putting together my list of winners was such a great experience, the scenery in New Zealand was breathtaking, and my fellow cast-members were great to work with.

OK, some bad news for the winners. Glenn graciously promised me a single mug for this competition. His last mug. Lacking foresight, I didn't set up a tiebreaker. I want to set up one now, after the fact.

So, my proposed tiebreaker is to have the two winners predict how much money LOTR will make this weekend. Here is its historical performance (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=returnoftheking.htm) Oscar winners almost always see a spike in their grosses the weekend after.

SideSwipe and Natalie: Post your predictions here or PM me if you prefer. Thursday 11:59 pm EST is the deadline. Final boxoffice numbers come out on Monday afternoon for the weekend. If either of you is unhappy about this after-the-fact tiebreaker, PM me and I'll talk to glenn about alternative prizes. Or I'll sleep with whoever doesn't get the mug.

Glenn, you need a bakesale or something to raise funds for RF prizes. :shake:

You know, they gave two Oscars in the Best Actress category when there was a tie in 1968 between Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand!

SideSwipe, maybe we can reach a joint-custody agreement--you can have the mug Monday through Wednesday, and I will get the mug on Thursday through the weekend.

SideSwipe, maybe we can reach a joint-custody agreement--you can have the mug Monday through Wednesday, and I will get the mug on Thursday through the weekend.

No way, I want him here every other weekend!

You could play Rock, Paper, Scissors for it. I'm available for hire as an RPS consultant.

So who won the mug? ;)

Cubed, are you gonna run this contest again when the nominees come out? The Grammy nominations just came out today and got thinking about trying for a better turnout on my Grammy Award game which was a direct ripoff of this one :)
