What can you tell me about USAA in San Antonio? I know they had some lay offs recently, but I am interested in moving to SA for personal reasons. Are there any other firms in SA that might be willing/able to pay relocation costs?

TP San Antonio kicks butt!
Tp is the best place to work and San Antonio is the best office of all TP offices.
It is small enougth to feel comfortable but big enougth to have all resources all avaliable. An example will be that TP SA has its own PDC unit, which is different from offices who have to share PDC with other offices and get themselves into a dog fight for entry-level talents.
So come on down to SA, TX
check out our Alamo, and your fat pay checks with no state income tax deducted.

I've never tried the TP in San Antonio, but I hear that Montezuma's revenge is a bi*ch, so I guess its important.

According to TP's website, they aren't hiring in San Antonio

Some things you might not have thought about regarding San Antonio:

However, Don't let the lack of an income tax be the reason you come down here.

No income tax but property tax and fees is significantly higher. The sales tax is near 8% So, I suspect you come out about the same. Your property taxes will be approximately 3% of your house's assessed value.

Traffic is quite congested, so if you work for USAA, don't live more than 5 miles from work. This is more critical when you work 4 10 hour days because your evening evaporates pretty quickly if you have a long commute.

Probably New Yorkers will think this is no big deal because they're used to significant commutes, but believe me - if you can get from door to door in about 20 minutes, you'll be much happier than if you have 45 minutes each way.

There are many good reasons for being in San Antonio. The beauty of the Hill Country, many public parks, the Riverwalk, TexMex, are among them. You can always visit, too.

I have heard that Fiesta, which is in April, is quite a party. Just remember that in SA, it is the summer months instead of the winter ones that you spend inside. On the plus side, you can live quite well on an actuary's salary here.

Grammar:

I apologize for the grammar on the previous post. It is not up to my usual standards. This board lacks the ability to let you review your posts before submission.

If the phbBB software really is free, perhaps it should be modified to give us this capability.

I am the original poster.

I am not interested in hearing about SA, I know all I need to know. Although you may be selling other individuals.

I am interested in learning about the job opportunities. I want to know about the environment at USAA, or other firms that might be hiring or willing to at least take a look. Who else in SA would hire low-level actuarial staff?

To Anon from TP: would you be willing to talk via email or phone about opportunities in SA?

To Anonymous:

With such an assholish attitude, there's no way in hell a customer-focused firm such as TP would be interested in you.

Better stay in school, chump!

I think the atmosphere at USAA is quite professional - people treat you with respect, are interested in your development, and USAA provides excellent in-house training.

The actuarial program is good - on paper it appears about average, but the attitude of management towards your study is positive and encouraging.

The 4 day work week is pretty decent, too.

I love working here.

Hope that helps.

GPM and Tower LIfe are two life companies in SA that hire actuaries. I do not know anything about their current hiring activity.

Wow, you dug up this old thread to ask that?
