As much as I like Pedro (http://projo.com/report/html/redsox/07075951.htm), things like this get on my nerves.
Why can't he just watch his mouth and play. Then again why don't all professional athletes shut their mouths and just play?

I love listening to Pedro talk. He has to be the most arrogant, petulant player in all of sports. It just cracks me up everytime he opens his mouth. And he's so matter of fact about it - "well yes, if I had played we would have won" or "I didn't have much help today, but I didn't really need it" or "I only had a couple days rest, but I told the manager I was going to play in this playoff game so that we would win" (these are obviously all paraphrased, but the spirit is there).
He just always makes me chuckle, in an I-can't-believe-your-teammates-put-up-with-this-crap sort of way.

HC, can you please explain what you mean by "I like Pedro"?
I respect his ability, but beyond that the guy is a total jerk no matter what uniform he wears. What's to like?

Perhaps his teammates put up with it because sometimes he pitches batting practice.

Captain America,
I guess I shouldn't really have said that I like Pedro, per se.
I like the fact that he wins a ton of games for the Red Sox.

Except when he's hurt.
Or playing the Yankees.

So when I read this I became curious: what is Pedro's record against the Yankees? I did a little searching, but maybe you guys can help me figure out where to find stats like this. In fact, I'd just like to have a good site for baseball stats in general, not just W/L records.

He's 2-4 (in 10 starts!) over the last two years vs. the Yanks. But don't take my word for it. Check cbs.sportsline.com

Espn.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits3?statsId=4875&type=pitching) has numbers like this. They show him as 4-4 in 12 starts vs the Yankees over the last three years. But that's with a 2.14 ERA, 19 BBs, 115 Ks, .191 BA against in 84 innings (84/12 = 7 innings per start). Can't really blame Pedro for the unspectacular W/L record.

PS - Jonas, for historical stats, not broken down quite as finely as espn's, go to baseball-reference.com . Or, download (http://www.baseball1.com/statistics/) the database BR is based on and run your own queries.

W-L is not a perfect indicator of pitching prowess.
See Roger Clemens and his run support.
Besides, haven't the Yankees been WAY over 0.500 the last three years? If so, Pedro's doing better than the average opposing pitcher.

HC said Pedro wins a ton of games for the Sox. Then I pointed out two scenarios in which he hasn't (or doesn't or won't or whatever). I agree he has pitched very well against the Yanks, good enough to win most times. I also agree W-L doesn't tell the whole story.
I was taking the opportunity to take a poke at Pedro. He just begs for it, after all...

I don't have the motivation to go look up the numbers for myself to verify, so take this for what it's worth...I'm pretty sure the average runs scored by the Sox are pathetic when Pedro's pitching compared to when someone else has the start. It's like everyone else on the team takes a big breather for the night. A good chunk of Pedro's losses come in games where he has given up 2 or fewer runs and only let a handful of people on base.

Pedro is by far the best pitcher out there right now (including Randy Johnson), I will not argue about this. Last year he was injured and you could just tell because he was giving up three runs a game (which would have been top 5 ERA wise). The year before that he was awesome, and so on. His playoff performances are great - like when he came in and shut out the Indians for 6 innings when he was injured. So, maybe he isn't too good against the Yankees, but you have got to remember the game he pitched against them in September two seasons ago when he struck out 16 or 17, and gave up one hit (a HR on his only bad pitch of the game), it was one of the best single game performances ever. And if he was to face them in the playoffs, which he did in '00, he wins.
So what if he is an *ss. He knows he can beat anybody and he is right. Not for nothing, but the way that team was handled last year was awful. It is pretty bad when you fire a manager just because you don't get along with him, and he still gets manager of the year votes.
At least Pedro is not Roger Clemens.

Yeah, I noticed how Clemens became a much better pitcher as a Yankee.
Pedro should aspire to be as good as Allen Watson too, gotta learn to walk before you can run, right?

Well, at least no-one here is bitter...

Mention the Yankees and some people lose control of basic bodily functions. Poor, poor Bostonians.
hardly Bostonian, just laughing at the concept that a better pitcher = World Series
New Yorkers, always the victims ...

??
this is what i was referring to ... as if the fact that you were on a WS winner makes you a better pitcher, hence the Allen Watson reference
